For those that don't know VWs, the "through rods" are torsion bars being used to replace the bundled square torsion springs. Unlike the more common coil (spiral) springs of American cars, many VWs prior to the early 1980's used torsion springs, where the spring force comes from the twisting of the spring, instead of the compression. The torsion springs bundle together and form a square, which fit through a square opening in the middle of the front axle beam assembly, to prevent them from turning (twisting) en masse. The torsion spring supports the weight of the front end. When it's replaced with the round torsion bar, the spring is not locked in place and the weight of the vehicle is removed from the springs and onto the air shocks being used in the video, which also allows the trailing arms to move up and down.

Did the back of the VW bug drop at all?? How many inches did the front and back drop was the compressor strong enough to lift an drop and how long did the management last you?
@tuned_tunas4 ай бұрын
Of course the rear dropped. How many inches I am not sure but it went from curb jumping height to ima need a new oil pan if I go over that speed bump. The compressor holds up fine years later. I have since switched out the bags in the rear for normal struts since the rears don't make a massive difference being aired out. You can spend a ton of money on a fancy management but this works great for me.

Curious, why couldn’t you just leave the stock springs and just remove the center grub bolts? Would that not accomplish the same thing?
@tuned_tunas6 ай бұрын
It works a lot better with the through robs from my research. You could do it that way. It’s all personal preference. Once you back out that screw nothing going to stop it from bottoming out. I just don’t like to slam my unibody

I buy from a mix of sources. eBay, Amazon and jugs.com
@erwinfletcher68932 жыл бұрын
Great job! I'm doing this next week when my parts arrive. Quick question- looking back now do you think you could have just loosened the bolts on the trailing arms and the grub bolts at the center of the beam, and then pulled the 4 caps off and driven the spring plates out without removing the arms at all? I'm also wondering if removing half the spring plates would allow it to sag a bunch but still offer some suspension.
@tuned_tunas2 жыл бұрын
There probably is an easier way but this is what worked for me. As for leaving the spring plates in I personally didn’t because I didn’t want the car to ride sloppy but rather just pivot and ride on the air shock. This way I can also lay the beam on the ground.
@jonathancarbajal5743 Жыл бұрын
I did the same set up to my bug but the shocks won’t lift did you tighten all the bolts to the thru rod including the center one
@tuned_tunas Жыл бұрын
No I did not tighten them. Only the ones on the end of the beam. The middle one just tighten the set screw so it wouldn’t back out. But I wouldn’t drive it into the through rod because it’s supposed to be able to pivot easily

@tuned_tunas3 жыл бұрын
Super beetles have a spring over strut and independent suspension. This is a ball joint beam. Earlier cars have a link pin but essentially the same thing for this set up.
@erwinfletcher68932 жыл бұрын
Yes this works on all beetles except super beetles.

Yessir. Stock beam. I wanted the fitment to be tight. I don’t like the narrowed beam look personally
@michaelnibblett20892 жыл бұрын
Interesting, because I have ppl telling me air shocks will not lower your car that you need an adjustable beam
@tuned_tunas2 жыл бұрын
Nah fam. I have a whole video series showing you how I bagged it. All I got is an empi through rod and the Monroe air shocks. And the beam can lay on the ground no issues.
@michaelnibblett20892 жыл бұрын
I thought so. I asked because I’m part of a beetle group on Facebook and someone was telling me that on these older cars changing the shocks does not effect ride height that it just absorbs impacts from bumps and that an adjustable beam is what you need
@tuned_tunas2 жыл бұрын
We’ll just the air shocks alone won’t do anything. You need to take out the spring plates in the beam and replace them with an empi through rod. That way it can adjust up and down to your desire. Cheaper than an adjustable beam. And a lot easier to raise and lower. With an adjustable beam you have to jack it up and screw the adjustment screws in. Forget all that bro.

They are just old-school air shocks that have been around since the 70s.. stop calling them struts ..A STRUT IS A SHOCK WITH A COIL SPRING THAT IS USED TO HOLD UP MOST 4-DOOR SEDANS. IN TODAY's WORLD .. air shock has been us alot in muscle cars by DIY owners .. a lot of 80s truck customizers used them on the back of the trucks
