This is a jewel. With only one drone, exactly as Galician Bagpipes from XIII Century

Keith Sanger has done quite a bit of research into the provenance of these pipes. That take him back as far as 1674, which would make them the oldest surviving parts of a highland bagpipe. He explains it all here: www.academia.edu/7961285/Fact_and_Fiction_The_Bannochburn_or_MacIntyre_Pipes_and_their_owners There is no recorded history of bagpipes in Scotland as early as Bannockburn, whereas there are references to other instruments in use in battles at that time.

Roderick D. Cannon in his book "The Highland bagpipe and its music" sets the arrival of the bagpipe to Scotland around 1400. That is a little too late to be present at Bannockburn. in 1314. Oldest mention of a bagpipe in the British Islands comes from... England!

Muse Well perhaps Rodericks theory is up for review, after all as new evidence emergencies more outdated theories must be challenged...

Exactly which evidences? It is clear bagpipes came from Europe. Period sources do not mention bagpipes at all till the end of 15th century.

Muse but humansxwere thought to only have inhabited North America for the past 12,000 yeaes or so, until...ooops, recent discoveries now indicate it was closer to 20,000 years. "around 1400" might just as easily have been much earlier. Just a thought...

Ah , Roderick aswell , Scottish publisher , right , but I am sure , he doesnae know some facts about Gaelic music. Pipes were invented in Iran , and the romans brought 'em to Britan. There are evidences , that pipes were played in Scotland before the 8th century. To find out the answer for yer question ,take a look at : Reed Music; Gaelic Language Bagpipe Documentary Series - Edpisode 1, lovely youtube series ,some Scottish Gaelic voiceline , and Eng sub , with real historians and true facts. Cheers!

There is an account of bagpipes being played at the battle of the North Inch at Perth between two clans in 1396 only 82 years after Bannockburn so the claim that these pipes were played at Bannockburn may not be as fanciful as some try to suggest.
