French (française) is a Romance language that descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French has evolved from Gallo-Romance, the spoken Latin in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul. Today, French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the word and a French-speaking person or nation is often referred to as Francophone in both English and French. French is an official language Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, France, Gabon, Guinea, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Mali, Monaco, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Switzerland, Togo, and Vanuatu. French is spoken as a first language in many parts of the world outside of France, including the Canadian province of Quebec, and among large communities in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick, and numerous other places including parts of the United States such as Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Meanwhile, the Persian language (Farsi) is classified as one of the Western Iranian languages. Persian has had a huge impact on other languages and cultures, mainly in the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia and holds official status is Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. Persian has strongly influenced numerous Turkic languages, as well as well as Armenian, Georgian, and many languages in the Indian subcontinent, eventually reaching Southeast Asia as well.

Persian and French are both Indo-European languages. Iran and France throughout the history had close relationships. During Qajar period many Iranians traveled to Europe and many Iranians learned French as of their second language. That's why Persian language has a some French influence too.

Some of those words are used in greek, too. It would be interesting if you made a video about greek and french. For many decades, till the '60's or '70's, french was a prestige foreign language, until english became more prominent, so a handful of french words were inserted in our vocabulary, mainly about clothing and car parts. There are of course greek equivalents for them, too. For example, any greek would understand what a pare-brise is [windshield], but not many would know the greek word for it

Interesting fact at 4:00, in Javanese (Indonesian local language), we say "jambon" for "pink". I think early Javanese people thought when some europeans (especially Spanish & Dutch) ate the ham, they (the Javenese people) thought the Europeans said "jambon" to refer about the colour of the ham, which is pink, not the word for ham itself.

Thank you! Persian has influenced many languages, but in this video we were using French words that entered the Persian language, which are mainly used in Iran. Really appreciate the lovely message and wishing you all the success with learning Persian.

You should lookup "false friend words" of the language pair ahead of time and sneak those in. It would make it more interesting.

(0:40) 'canapé' also exist in portuguese with the same spelling and meaning, but in Brazil we use it more for small slice of bread or toast on which are placed ingredients like sauces. (0:58) 'camion' is 'caminhão' in portuguese. (2:14) 'chance' also exist in portuguese with the same spelling and meaning. (2:44) 'Manteau' is 'manto' in portuguese, but usually connected to religious people wearing it. (3:38) 'Geste' is 'gesto' in portuguese. (4:50) 'Séchoir' loosely resembles 'secador' (pt). (7:08) 'Bronzer' could be 'bronzear' ou 'bronzeado' (pt). (8:25) 'Cravate' is 'gravata' (pt)

Watching old videos again is so much fun. So much passion and good laughs even at that early stage. Also, I love it that in Iran there are still such epic names for women, like Shahrzad. I've even seen Parysatis being still used -even though I wasn't sure whether it was a proper name or more like a nikname in this day and age. It would be like finding a Greek guy called "Agamemnon".

Bahador Alast! Wow ! I have seen so many of your videos Persian vs French/ German/ Spanish/ Turkish/ Urdu/Hindi/ Albanian/ Arabic... But I have never came across Persian vs English. Yeah, I know English is the medium of communication in all your videos. But still, I want to know what are the common words in Persian and English. My request! Please put up *Persian vs English* and the medium of communication can be some other language and please put up English subtitles.

There are many similar IE cognates (like tu & to, deux & do, nom & nam, est & ast, et & o, qui & ki, non & na, que & ke, etc.), though the ones in the video were mostly just loanwords. Back then, more than 100 years ago, during Qajar times, France and Iran had good relations and many Iranians went to study at French universities. And when they came back, some words entered through colloquial language. That is also why the Iranian education system is based on the French system.

Hahaha! Guys! Mike is not racist. We used to work for the same company together and he's one of my closest friends and travel buddies. We've travelled to so many countries from North Africa, Middle East, South and southeast Asia, to sub Saharan Africa together. When we were younger we went on several different trips together and when you're with someone in the heart of Africa or the middle of India and deep in the least touristy parts of Morocco you learn almost everything about them and their character. He may just be shy at times, and appear "uncomfortable", and definitely not as social as Jackie (who's his girlfriend btw), but he's such a nice, open-minded, and genuinely great guy!

Stefano Giordanengo yes Farsi, I know very well it’s called Persian in English, but I feel comfortable calling it Farsi. It’s a habbit I can’t easily get rid of. Like there are several Indo-Iranian languages that have no English equivelant like Urdu, Hindi, Pashto, Balochi, Azeri so it makes sense to me personally to call it Farsi :D

Gilet comes from arabic: from Arabic جَلِيقَة‎ (jalīqa), ultimately from Turkish yelek. Doublet of jelick. Other words of the list you gave can also come from latin of greek witch influenced a lot frensh and a little bit persian.

As Persian didn't trust Russians and British, the education system was put in place by French from early 20th century. That's why there are many French words in Persian. Similarly, the public administration in Iran was reformed by Germans. In 1916, there were only 80 public servants in Iran, In 1936, there were 120 000 public servants. And finally Swedish Major Harald Hjalmarson was put in command of the Persian Gendarmerie. Thus, Russia and UK were put out of any reforms in Persia which became Iran in 1950.

interesting videos. I think we can talk about similarities between languages if those languages are in the same family (English, German, Italic, Persian etc. or Arabic and Hebrew). Similarities between Persian, Turkish and Hebrew do not make sense although there are some shared/borrowed words between them
