Using Ocean Water For Your Reef Tank - AND SO MUCH MORE!

Lauren uses ocean water for her reef tanks! How easy is that?!
I got a chance to chat with Lauren from Simple Aquariums (‪@SimpleAquariumsLauren‬) in a new feature I like to call, "10 Questions With..." We talked about so much...aiptasia removal, doing water changes with natural seawater, her new koi pond, the best way to learn about keeping a reef when you don't have a local fish store...she even gives an American accent a try!

I live in south Florida some of the best oceans and fishing in the world and I only use real ocean water on my tanks I collect it myself during high tide at the inlet never had any problems don’t listen to people and it’s 💯 better and natural and saves me lots of $ i love living by the ocean catching my own sea creatures

I do the same thing in St. Louis. I use River Des Pere Mississippi Mud water straight into the Reef tank. We are lucky.

hey Remy, enjoyed that , not sure i'd put water from the ocean in my tank but if it works for her great!! I've been following [ Reef Eco ] it's pretty cool he builds most of his equipment like sump,dosng containers, etc... i think that would make for a great interview. keep them coming!!!!

I’m in Australia and can confirm not only can we get Bumblebee Gobies in several online stores but I have seen them for sale in my LFS. That said, we cannot get Bumblebee SNAILS, which is perhaps what she meant (which would make sense in the context of this video, as bumblebee gobies are freshwater, and bumblebee snails are saltwater).

Have you tried a "bumble bee goby" in saltwater? There is only one species that stays freshwater throughout its life span, the others go brackish, some can live long term in saltwater. I set up a nano reef once using only bumble bee, gobies and snails. She does say she misspoke and was talking about bumble bee snails in the comments.

In my mind it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other. All of those pests and diseases can (and will) still come in on frags and fish that you purchase from your local fish store. It's common practice in Australia.

As she said, lots of people do it with zero negative impact. Plenty of LFS where I am use entirely natural seawater in their frag tanks and displays. Hell, public aquariums do it! As for it being transported in the boot of the car and that somehow causing issues, you’re aware there are these things called “containers” that can be used to contain liquid and prevent it leaking, right?

I use my ponds water which is super clean and alkaline and mix my salt in it. IMO the local RO water from water suppliers killed my soft corals and fish and guess what now they thriving. I also add a glass of natural sea water monthly to add some bacterial biodiversity. No more algae issues, no aptasia, no more fish deaths and my softies and inverts are multiplying. A natural approach works better in the long run. I top up with pond water. My LFS would never approve this. 😂
