it was done ( the story and ideas) back in 2012, although SS does have a lot of respect for women, ( also his dad who writes them ) that scene was not conveyed in the best way, I think he did take criticism though and his two movies after that are better in showing women better. That make over song was directed by ss rajamouli's guru. SSR did that to tribute him for helping in his early career. Raghavendra Rao is a director who can create legendary set pieces and songs. SSR couldn't stick the landing for leading upto the song sequence. Ik it is problematic and Indian cinema still has consent issues. it is improving tho. I am not asking to forgive it, but don't let it hinder the experience of following sequences bcoz they're cool. And criticize at the end. Edit: And what does that tell about me. I like Indian cinema and Wheel of time, Deep thoughts.

The whole romantic sequence was the weirdest/creepiest part of the movie. Tbh, Avantika's whole character felt like filling up quotas, which was disappointing since the other female character were more rounded. Since that idea got lost in translation just thought to mention, yes most of the sequence may taste like those usual masala you seen in mass movies(yes for those movies its like Newton and rest of the gang existed for nothing!!), but here the point they are making is with Ancient india in terms of medical science we were so advanced. We had a plethora of details in treating wounded and also almost believed that maintaining one's body in great shape is almost like prayer, so when some kicks are shown in movie which for some may seem like death blows, would only be another Tuesday during those times.

I understand the skepticism here but I love this movie. Moreover, you forgot that the film is named "Bahubali" not "Avantika" and also neglected how powerful the scenes with 3 ladies (Shivagami, Devasena, mother who adopted shiva followed by Avantika) were. Although I am with you in the makeover sequence, I would appreciate if you tried to understand the story-telling before getting all judgmental at the first glance. Just an advice to understand how to perceive movies from other countries.

In the battle of Haldighati he slashed his sword oh his energy commander which had cut down that enemy along with his horse into two halves, just by a single strike. That strong Indians were. All that women power and equal place you are talking about, you must keep in mind that the story belongs to a period where these concepts weren't evolved. It's a classic case of looking the past with 21st century ideas. It's not necessary to insert today's ideals into an era of different social structure. Just enjoy the movie, don't bother about physics. If you wish to apply physics, do that in a classroom. If you don't like this, its perfectly fine. We love interstellar equally but when I am down, I am going to watch Baahubali and not Interstellar.

Let's look at Avanthika's (Tamannaah Bhatia) version of these events. Part of a guerrilla outfit, Avantika spends her days fighting, spying and (supposedly) ignoring details like her wardrobe and hairstyle. When Avanthika first encounters Shiva, she becomes aware that she isn’t just a warrior, but a woman who finds an equal and opposite side to her self - one that can’t help but be struck by the prettiness of the tattoo that Shiva painted on her hand while she was asleep. Does he tattoo her to mark her as his own? Perhaps. Is it his attempt at beautifying (and therefore, feminizing) her with sringaar? Absolutely. Avanthika’s reaction - despite the prettiness of the tattoo - is anger. Her world and her sense of self are being unsettled, and she resists the change. But resistance doesn’t mean she wipes off the painted design. Neither is she outraged enough by her lurking makeover-inclined admirer to cut Shiva down to size when she finally meets him. Not just that, she lets him strip her and apply eco-friendly make-up, which includes everything from crushed berries to a dash of Shiva’s own blood. No pain, no gain, to quote an old adage. Avanthika is a hardened warrior; one who killed ten-odd soldiers on her own, with just a sword and her own brute strength; one who is considered good enough to take on an important (even if it is suicidal) mission by her leader. If the woman who is that skillful with a sword and as physically agile as Avanthika is in her introductory scene wanted to make Shiva stop, what are the chances that she wouldn’t be able to do so? Yes, she glares at Shiva, but she doesn’t lift even a pinkie to resist him even though a warrior as skilled as her would probably have enough moves to counter his brute strength. To assume Avanthika is incapable of resisting Shiva - despite proof to the contrary in her introductory scene where she cuts a swathe across a contingent of soldiers - is about as sexist as Shiva thinking he needs to teach her about lipstick and eyeliner. Why are we ruling out the fact that while Avantika may be angry at this stranger who leaves his mark on her body, but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t like him or isn’t intrigued by him? What is wrong with his desire for her making Avanthika see herself in a different light? Isn’t that what happens to us when we fall in love in real life? Why must we discount the idea that Avanthika likes a man who can match her strength both physically and in terms of will? Why is the first assumption that women can be and are overpowered? There are some people who can and do boldly state their consent. There are those who enjoy being more coy about it. Everything can't be reduced to "yes, let's have sex" or a "no means no". There's a middle ground between those two extremes, a space where we negotiate and evaluate, where we check each other out. That’s the world most of us operate in, and it’s where Avanthika and Shiva’s relationship in Baahubali sits. The scene between Avanthika and Shiva ends with two flowers bobbing at each other, the age-old code for consensual sex in Indian cinema. At best, he’s bringing out her femininity - infuriating as that idea might be - and that may be called foreplay. At its worst, the scene depicts what happens to those who are in denial about their sexuality: they “fall in love” in five minutes with the first stranger that crosses their paths and are at it like bunnies in no time. 👍👍👍

@@CinePlay_Guy I have studied Hinduism in great detail for 30 years and have also studied Vedanta in an ashram in India for a year. Hinduism does not at all justify this. Why are you embarrassing India and Hinduism in front of foreigners to make it looks like we support stalking women, stripping them naked and treating them like play things just so you can defend your fav movies. In Mahabharata a woman who got stripped by evil men became the cause of the destruction of an an entire kingdom and great war and Drupadi left her hair open until she soaked it in the blood of the man who stripped her. In Ramayana raven kidnapped Sita, and it became the cause of a great war between India and Lanka and defeat of the mighty ravava empire. In both epics the cause of massive war and destruction was because a woman got disrespected.
