World War I was tough for fledgling Latvian Nation. Still under control of Czarist Russia ever able bodied Man. From underage teenagers to elderly were drafted to fight for Czarist Russia to the point Latvia small in population were left nearly devoid of the male population for all of them were at the front. Nearly fifty percent of men never returned home. A War in which we as people had no stake in and were forced to fight on behalf of Czarist Russia which occupied us. Immediately following the devastating war and with The Russian Civil War (The Communist Revolution) sweeping Russia. Latvian hopes for Independence spurned on by country wide Nationalist aspirations with dreams and hope of Independence. Latvia saw its chance to pry itself from Russia and form an Democratic Independent Nation. The result was Latvian War of Independence. With men returning home from World War I immediately turned around and returned to the Front Lines. This time to fight off both German Monarchist and Russian Czarist Forces. And WON their independence. The Nation of Latvia was born. To this day in Latvia. We remember the painful sacrifice of our Men and Boys that gave us our Freedom, our Nation and our Right as Free and Independent Nation. Both of my Grandfathers, Adam Rudzots and Walter Freibergs fought in both wars. In remembrance of them and ALL Latvian men that went to battle for the chance the mere chance at FREEDOM! Dievs, svētī Latviju! God Bless Latvia! Es karai aiziedamsi is a Traditional Latvian War Song From that period. A lament for all the Latvian Men that left home never to return from the front. I, going to war I, going to war, Left my sister in the cradle. Returning from the war, I found a great weaver*! I asked my mother, Who is that great weaver? That, son, is your sister, Whom you left in the cradle. Weaver, my sister, Weave me a war flag. Weave it blue or red, Never in your life to see me.
