Something amazing about Latvian and Lithuanian music; the prominence of pagan themes, the archaic languages, and the lack of influence from other European styles. Has an authenticity I don't get from many other European folk musics.

Liels paldies for the lyrics and the English translation! This is indeed a cultural treasure and what I find especially appealing in Latvian, besides its melodious nature, is the fact that we can easily get the spoken and sung words from the written language!

My translation, sounds better IMO. Little Skylark, don't sleep at the roadside Strict lords will ride past tomorrow, trampling your nest Trampling your nest and placing you in their carriage Placing you in their carriage and taking you to German lands Taking you to the German lands, there they'll make you head to the forest There they'll make you head to the forest, where they'll make you chop wood When you've chopped wood, they'll make you light the forge Once you've lit the forge, then you'll forge armour Once you've forged your armour, they'll make you go to war

@@Balticfolk Well, literal translations are also good for the analytic side of the mind, I personally find them utterly useful, though, of course, some people need the free translations so as not to get the wrong English equivalents of the sentences!

@@joalexsg9741 very interesting: for me, as a Lithuanian it all sounds without "they'll make you", but as in Lithuanian "once YOU do ..., you'll HAVE to"
@joalexsg9741
@joalexsg9741 4 жыл бұрын
@@benkeplateonline748 I try to learn a bit of Latvian now and then, but because I already learn other languages, I hardly find the time to learn the others I find interesting but must be set aside due to my priorities in terms of the little time available. Lithuanian is the other Baltic language which is precious for Indo-European studies (Baltic Prussian too but its revival is still in its very beginnings, hope they get to revive it though). Your observation is precious in terms of comparative studies, even though I'm not sure if I understood what you meant, but I take it that for you, as a Lithuanian native speaker, the translation should be more like, referring to the bird: 'once you do that ... you will have to)', correct me if I got it wrong. By the way, I was getting lost while trying to follow the lyrics and then realized he was repeating some parts, which confused me, but after I checked it his pronunciation matches the written words almost completely. There were, however, other Latvian songs in which I could not recognize some of the pronunciation in the equivalent position given in the lyrics. In general, I've noticed it´s a very phonetic spelling and speakers tend to pronounce the words clearly enough, which is a blessing for foreign learners.

So I found out that using a DNA test that I am 5% North Eastern European. My mom is German but her dad is from Berlin. All of his family came from East Prussia, from Pommern to Königsberg and even further east. So I wonder, if the NE Europe side is from this area?
@Balticfolk
@Balticfolk 4 жыл бұрын
East Prussian Germans have assimilated locals, so it's definitely likely that your NE European is from that side. It's most likely Lithuanian & Old Prussian.

Iecels tevi karietēi, novedīsi vāczemēi. Novedīsi vaczemēi, tur tev liksi mežā braukti, Tur tev liksi mežā braukti, tur tev liksi malku cirsti. Kad tu malku sacirtīsi, tad tev liksi guni kurti. Kad tu guni sakurīsi, tad tev liksi bruņas kalti. Kad tu bruņas nosakalsi, tad tev liksi karā ieti.
