Baie-Johan-Beetz - Cap Feldspath mine trail (Spar Mica)
GPS coordinates: 50.315301, -62.756221 Entrance to the trail
The Cap Feldspath Mine Trail, also known as Spar Mica, leads through a former feldspar quarry that was mined in the mid-20th century.
3 km long, it crosses a forest devastated by a fire in 2013. The charred trees along the trail still bear witness to this sad event today.
However, the vegetation quickly came back to life and it is possible to observe several species of plants as well as small fruits.
The soil is sandy and blueberries abound in this area. Alain picked up and ate it all along the way.
We arrived at a small cove with a superb white sand beach. The water is unparalleled clarity.
We continued our hike along the coastline. We saw an old wharf there, which was probably once used to transport minerals.
We retraced our steps and decided to climb to the top of the cliff located near the beach.
This should not be done if you have no climbing experience or are afraid of heights.
There is no marked trail. Sometimes you have to experiment to find the best place to find your way.
At the top of the cliff, the view on the beach as well as on the Gulf of St. Lawrence is sensational.
The return therefore took place partly on this cliff. The landscape is magnificent. The granite rocks on which we walk and the ground covered with lichens form a dazzling country setting.
During the hike on this cliff, we also benefited from a nice point of view on the bay bearing the name of Gaine à Foin.
At the end of the hike, we came back to the trail to return to the parking lot.
