As of the end of March 2019 Natural England and the Government intend to follow a EU directive which will result in the withdrawal of licenses to rescue and release grey squirrels and other certain other animals. This will mean that there is no one who can legally help a squirrel in need and any taken to vets or other rescues will be put to sleep. Please sign the petition asking for the licensing of such rescues to continue. Full details can be found on the Urban Squirrels website and Facebook page. The agility of these creatures is beyond amazing. Hunger will most likely overcome their fear of you , just do not make any sudden movements when they are nearby and they will become accustomed to you very quickly. I do not feed squirrels expensive nuts though, maybe once in a while,or if they become stale,They just love plain ole shelled field corn,I know they just eat the heart out of each kernel, but save what is left over, and feed to any wild deer that might be in the area, that way you get to enjoy not only the company of the squirrels, but also the magnificence of such a large animal that a deer is.

Agility: the German name of squirrels is "Eichhörnchen". "Eiche" is the German word for "oak". But the name of the animal comes not from the tree (at least red European squirrels mostly do not eat oak nuts), but from an old Germanic word, "aig" (later: "eich"). And "aig" means: "swift, nimble, fast". Or in other words: agile. ;) "Hörnchen" is "squirrel, Sciuridae.

I stand on the porch and smoke year round. I started keeping some peanuts in my pocket. A couple years ago we had a really harsh winter here. Feet of snow on the ground and subzero temps. This one squirrel would come and visit me every day at the same time. If I wasn't there he'd sit on the porch and wait. He'd eat out of my hand. Once spring came I never saw him again. One day he just quit showing up.

I once had a wild squirrel befriend me, she came up to me and touched my shoe. A couple months later I put a walnut in the shell on the palm of my hand, and offered it to her, she reluctantly approached and nibbled my finger tip while shaking, then jumped a few feet away, then I offered her the walnut again with my palm, then nibbled and shook my finger tip again. So I just offered her the walnut in my finger tips and she took the walnut, she was playful.

Actually rabies in squirrels is very rare, mostly because the they are neatly tucked in bed for the night, when most of the rabies carrying animals are out and about during the evening hours. Around here in upstate New York we have Raccoons, Skunks, Opossums, Foxes, and bats that I've seen regularly,.....but all of them so far have acted as expected and don't interact with the daylight active gray squirrels. In over 13 years here where I live near Albany, NY, ....the squirrel population has risen from about 3-4 back in 2005, to between 25-30 last winter when I could more easily count them in the part of the yard I shovel the snow OFF of to feed and water the gray squirrels. A whole lot of loving going on behind the scenes,....but when questioned NONE of them would admit to it! :-) I suspect this rarity of rabies in squirrels is similar in other parts of the United States. www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/rabies/fact_sheet.htm Partial Quote: "....What animals can get rabies? Rabies is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection. Among domestic animals, cats are most frequently diagnosed with rabies in New York State. Some animals almost never get rabies. These include rabbits and small rodents such as squirrels, chipmunks, rats, mice, guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters. It is possible for these animals to get rabies, but only in rare circumstances, such as if they are attacked but not killed by a rabid animal. Reptiles (such as lizards and snakes), amphibians (like frogs), birds, fish and insects do not get or carry rabies." Cheers, Joe T Ti Rod Tactical

if you want to tame a squirrel, this is how. feed it nuts. that is the only thing you need to do. it takes patience but eventually, you can walk up and hand feed it. wen you are doing this, make sure you follow these tips or else it will run away 1. duck if the squirrel is in a six feet radius. 2. don`t step on any leaves wen going to a squirrel. 3. patience. and try not to move if its right in front of you. wen the squirrel is no longer afraid of you. you can try petting it. after that, you will have a wild squirrel hopefully this will help

squirrels make terrible pets. they can b very destructive & they'll hurt like hell when they wanna jump, from your shoulder, to the table. (or vice-versa) it's best to have them as pets the same way you'd feed a stray cat. OUTSIDE! (like i do) i aint even gotta leave my door way. they just come up & take their snacks from me. (i feed alot more than JUST 1 tho) 🐿🌲🏡🌲🐿
