The city would not let students park where they could see their cars. You never saw a cop all night, but they would be there at 5 AM to tow you if you parked where you could see your car. Leaving it with the door open and the engine running seems a little sketchy. I would go with the keys in it as i spent years in concrete construction and trucks with the keys in them was normal as was wallets in the glove box as in this sort of work there is lots of chances of things falling out of your pocket . But in this case sitting in a random parking lot , not a pizza place or gas station with the door open would seem very unlikely .
