I've worked at several supermarkets and have experience at managerial positions training employees and what I can't figure out is why did absolutely no one who works there go and proactively offer assistance? Every single time I see an elderly person who has trouble seeing or moving around, or someone who is disabled, I walk right up to them with a smile and ask if I could help. That also works incredibly well if you have a reason to think that someone's stealing. Just be super polite and approach them in conversation. They'll think twice about stuffing their pockets or bags when you're right there talking to them.

its a lot better in the uk as a disabled person myself with a working dog, sometimes i cant verbally communicate or write for a while. i have always been offered help by the store staff or the general public. i have never had the cops called on me. the staff help with payments and bag up the shopping. what i saw in that target to that man sickened me and made me angry. it was clear all he needed was time and help which isnt illegal in any country. there was no logic or compassion here. i hope something gets done to the staff and the cops in this situation.

Insulting them, antagonizing, and interfering is called being an ass. Asking for names and badge numbers when it's all on the report is not necessary. It's public information. Not saying the police were right here. But had they followed instructions to begin with. Nobody would have been arrested. The police may not always have the legal right to detain you. But walking away is never a good idea. They may get fired down the road, but now you got get out of jail, post bond, pay a lawyer, go to court, and wait for the City to deliberate whether your lawsuit has merit. And that can take years. My father was an old school Nashville cop from the mid 60s to the early 90s. The rough parts of town were very dangerous. He was hard as nails, had a rough childhood, and served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. He was definitely not the type that you wanted to tangle with. However, he detested these types of officers. He always said that they were cowards with a badge and a gun.

Sometimes he and the other hard asses but good cops would refuse to patrol with them and basically banish them until the brass had to get rid of them, our sometimes they would resign on their own. He helped get a couple of actual corrupt cops prosecuted. He was an avid reader and Serpico was one of his favorite books. I still have his copy. When he joined the force, Nashville had just become one of the first metropolitan forces. The sheriff that had controlled the county before that was known to be corrupt. He and his partner were involved in investigating aspects of this. The sheriff was still in office in charge of corrections and had many corrupt deputies that were loyal. Some of these deputies joined the police department as they wanted to maintain their law enforcement powers. Some of these former deputies were in high positions within the police department. His partner was keeping some evidence at his home until they could turn it over to the TBI. Just like a movie script, his home was burglarized and nothing taken but the incriminating documents. However, the sheriff was eventually indicted and sent to prison.

Some departments actually do pre-employment IQ testing, and if it's too high, you're disqualified. It was challenged in CT a decade or so ago, but the court upheld the practice. I SERIOUSLY doubt he intended to steal anything. It obviously just takes him a little longer to sort these things out in his mind. The first one was wild. I've had crap like this happen. Pulled over for no reason, and the cop tried to claim I was swerving. He told me I smelt like alcohol. I told him I had just gotten off work and had a keg spray me when changing it. He wanted to do sobriety tests, while i asked for him to just breathalyze me. I told him my eyes were sensitive and he said my tearing up hardly being able to keep my eyes open without my sunglasses, showed my intoxication. Then, after being told balance was an issue due to bad knees, he made me attempt to stand on one leg. That also proved intoxication for him. So he then decides he needs to use the breathalyzer on me only to find out I was, in fact, sober.

​@@Puschit1 that was why i asked and was denied a breathalyzer from the beginning. The moment he asked if i was drinking because i smelt like beer, I said no and explained. Every single test he gave me, he claimed proved i was drunk. He was looking for a reason because the only thing that saved me was the breathalyzer. Trust me, ive dealt with my fair share of shady cops, unlawfully fishing for an arrest. Ive also been pulled over for grand theft auto in my dads car that wasnt reported missing or stolen because he let me borrow it.

@@perspective75 Yes, libertarianism/anarchy. Let everyone do what they want unless they harm others. If they do (e.g. murdering, stealing), self-defense is legitimate. It's OK to have specialized security forces to help, especially when really bad things happen (e.g. terrorists hold hostages at gunpoint), but they shouldn't have "authority" per se. It's just a job. You could pay a private/nonprofit insurance and have highly trained guys come over to help you, but they can still be the same civilians as everybody else. I don't want to pay taxes and watch police prosecute drug dealers, although I personally hate drugs. If some junkies disturbed me in my area, which previously didn't have junkies and I didn't agree to them coming, I should have the right to make them leave. But it's not my business what some people do 100 kilometers away. That's why I hate the concept of states, they just establish these "authorities" and enforce some silly laws over a pretty much random area.

That cost all of us money because of the officers big head and power hungry bs. Needless to say the officer ended up getting beaten up bad one night when he was off duty and now walks with a bad limp and works at the grocery store stocking shelves!!!

There is another video where a cop sees two cars parked illegally on the street (It is a narrow street and is is all a no parking zone. In addition, they were mostly in a lane of traffic.) There are not a lot of houses in the area, so it is obvious what house they belong to. He goes up and knocks on the door and shouts that he is police and just wants to talk to them. It appears no one is home. He goes back to his vehicle and calls two two trucks. It takes about an hour for the tow trucks to get there. While he is waiting, he knocks and shouts a few more times before giving up because clearly no one is home. When the two trucks show up and start hooking up to the first car, a young adult female runs out of the house screaming. She is on the phone with her boyfriend. The cop explains that the tow company now has possession of the first car. If she can move the second car before the tow truck hooks up, she can avoid the tow charge on it. She can't. She says boyfriend owns the second car, his friend owns the first car, both of them are less than five minutes away and they are on the way. By the time the boys get there, the second car is on the truck, and the first car is gone. If she had talked to the officer thru the door, he would have told her to move the cars, and they could have just put the cars in the huge driveway that had plenty of room for them. Don't ignore police. Don't have a casual conversation with them, but it can pay to listen to what they have to say.

My daughter worked with disabled kids and teens. She told me that many police are encouraged to volunteer their time for these events. At first glance, that seems normal and warm hearted. But the real reason is senior cops WANT their younger officers to recognize that theses 14 yr olds grow up to become 24... 34 yr old adults! Hopefully, they will treat them as humans and NOT criminals! Truly disheartening to see these cops, WITH FULL CONTROL OF THEIR FACULTIES, treat a disabled man as a mastermind criminal!

I worked in law enforcement for 19 years. I was not a law enforcement officer. I can tell you that from my experience, most cops have gang mentality, they hide behind their protected statuses and their pride is the #1 cause these things happen. Most officers I've ever encountered have been horrible people, until I took out my badge, then their entire demeanor would change. Police officers are not your friends, even if you're the one that called them. Best advice I can ever give people is to be quiet. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you need or want to. LEO's are trained to take charge of the situation, both verbally and physically. Lawyer up as soon as anything doesn't feel right. You DO have the right to remain silent at ANY time and should use that right.

I think it varies by county and even year. I had one awful cop who hit me for no reason but I've had several experiences with cops and they were usually courteous, professional, and even friendly. I am white and often live in college towns so that helps.

I know there are ahole cops out there, and not few of them. So, not going to try and excuse tyranny or lack of character. But being a cop is a shit job that doesn't exactly inspire a great deal of trust in the people you gotta deal with on a day-to-day basis. Cops don't exactly encounter the best strata of society on the regular, they get called to uncertain and potential situations, they get blatantly lied to by almost everyone most of the time, sometimes with fake accusations, they are being dehumanized because of their uniform. And most cops in the U.S. are notoriously unprepared for their job, both being given too litle training in the craft, as well as in the law and definitely paid not enough. Again, not going to excuse abuse of the badge or being a tyrant to further small egos, but even if you're a "Good Cop", you still get shit on a lot by people for no other reason that you have that particular job. Is it any wonder that it attracts mostly people who are desperate for power over people?

I think I was pushing back on the "most cops are horrible people" with my own experiences, but I am a white, middle class guy who leads a boring criminal life, other than speeding. I worked with poor people in Baltimore and they have a very different experience. Police tried to frame one Arab friend of mine. Cops are the societal trash men and are immensely important for a society. They do the crap no one else wants to do. For many people, their interaction with police is at pivotal moments in their life and are profoundly traumatized if treated poorly. Police are poorly paid for the desired expertise, danger, and the daily crap of disagreeable people and paperwork. Part of the problem is the county system in the US. Some counties pay terribly and will basically take anyone, and the people attracted often like using power and learn to like it more with time.

It's ones one actions and choices at the end of the day. Which will have consequences. If you play your cards right you can turn the tables on a cop. Even if arrested. It's so sad that they did that to him. Shoplifting?! He hadn't left the store. He was actually standing there at the till sorting out his money so he could pay the right amount. They should have just explained they got a call and were investigating it, asked if he needed help to count the money out, check that he paid for all items, and made sure he got a receipt. If it comes up that he didn't have enough money for everything, get a clerk to help him put an item back. Everyone says "have a nice day". End of interaction. That's how I expect EVERYONE to be treated in this situation. They didn't even ask him what he was doing or if he needed help - straight to arresting him. Really poor policing. The guy was clearly disabled, was polite, and wasn't in much of a condition to run away anyway. Terrible inhumane decision to roughly handle him like that. I would really expect any public servant to be able to recognise disabilities like this. Scared the heck out of the poor guy! I think they did this because they thought "there's something wrong with this guy" and totally misread his situation and intentions. I hope he's doing OK these days, and those clowns in uniform got some sort of punishment.
