Well I caught more yellowbelly on this fishing trip than I thought I was going to.
In my area, people call them yellowbelly. In South Australia people call them callop. Their real name is Golden Perch and they are an Australian native fish.
I love bait fishing for yellowbelly. In fact, I just love fishing for yellowbelly full stop. I have had some amazing session when fishing for yellowbelly. Back in the old Lake Mokoan days, the yellowbelly fishing would be red hot whenever the lake was filling. For the rest of summer it would tick over steadily. It was an amazing fishing lake.
I caught quite a few fish in this session, 4 of which came in a really short bite window. Had any of them been big enough to keep, rest assured... I would have kept a few.
This video was filmed at Lake Nillahcootie in Victoria.

Apparently according to some studies done on it, the fish hook gets caught in the stomach, so it doesn't pass through into the intestines possibly because of it's size, and also it usually will lodge into the wall a bit in the stomach. The study then says that the stomach acid of the fish will result in the hook being eaten away in the stomach, at which point sections of corroded away hook may then pass through the fish. So it seems essentially it usually survives. This also shouldn't be a massive shock, since the spines on a lot of fish are very sharp themselves, and these get devoured along with the entire small fish by the larger fish. So the fish stomach is evolved to be tough against stuff like pointy things.

Not to seem a smart arse mate, but the spine on the yebbly is on the gill plate, or operculum, not the rakers, which are an internal part of the gills, mostly of molluscs and certain fish that filter feed. The rakers catch the food organisms inside the gill structure before the water is expelled. Certain fish have developed these rakers into a useful secondary teeth structure, such as the cichlid family and certain members of the damsel fish family in the ocean. This enables them to grip their prey with their mouth and strip meat from their prey without danger of accidental release. If you watch an oscar eat a goldfish, a cloud of scales often flies out of the gill plates. This is the gill rakers at work. The spine on the yebbly's operculum is a defense mechanism that is fairly common in fish. This is why most fish swallow other fish head first, because flared gills and spiny fins go down easily one way, not the other. Swallowing a fish tail first can actually become a death sentence if it lodges in the wrong place. When fishing live baits pinned in the head, this is often the reason a take is not secure until the fish stops, turns the bait head first and then swallows It is also used offensively to bash at prey to stun it and I have seen schools of yebbly smash through schools of shrimp and bait fish, especially small redfin in spring, just shaking their heads with gills flared before turning and going back to collect the corpses they leave in their wake. This is why many yebbly are caught in the face when fishing lures, they are trying to stun the lure and turn it to take it head first. They also smash each other up pretty well with the spines in spawn. Love is brutal as a fish.
@robbiefishing

Great video again Robbie. Nice yellas you were catching. I love yellas. Great to catch, on bait and lures, and great on the plate. Up here in CQ, most of our yellas are green, with gold belly and red anal and ventral fins. With the larger fish, I find the fat can be rolled away from the fillet. The flesh tastes pretty good then. I never use stainless steel nor bronze hooks. I like ordinary steel, because the gastric juices have a better chance of dissolving the hook, or the steel can rust away if a lipped fish escapes. Love ya work Robbie.
