Baitcaster Repair - How to Replace a Damaged Pawl (THIS IS WHY YEARLY MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT)

Have you ever had a problem with the line guide on your baitcaster getting stuck? There are a few common problems that can cause this such as a dirty/dry baitcaster, a worn out worm gear, or a damaged pawl. The pawl was the culprit on my reel and I wanted to share with you how I diagnosed the problem and changed it out. If you love taking things apart to find out how they work, you'll enjoy this

I had major back surgery so I will have lots of time to get my gear in good shape before I can get out there. Doc says I should be able to shore fish stable ground by pre-spawn! He is going to help me get a handicapped pier tag and a car tag. No boat action, or rough shore for at least a year but Thank God I should still be able to feesh!

I used my brother's Chinese reel that haven't been used for a while and after a few cast the line guide stop working after a cast. So I reeled in the line, ofc it was not good. So I went home and open it do some checking and oiled it. Seems working well but who knows when it will occur again.😉

I recently broke my black max, it was t working well, took it apart a bit and tried to fix it, ended up destroying it. I’m not that upset because I recently bought a shimano casitas and hoping that it’ll perform well. DEBO, Ik you’re big into kastking, but can you possibly try the piscifun torrent bait casting rod?? *I used this to replace my old reel that is getting harder and harder to crank after being used **allabout.wiki/01fs** in one of the harshest environments for reels I've ever fished in. The Battle II has held up far better and longer, and the sealed bearings make a big difference. I think I've caught close to 50 fish with it already, and the drag has always been smooth. I’m hoping you see this with a 2 year old vid but where are you getting replacement Pawls? I have a Lew’s speed reel with some sentimental value and I just ran into this issue recently with it. The reel is almost 10 years old and is still great besides this line guide issue.

I got this baitcaster at a yardsale. It's like brand new but it has some things that make me wonder if it's broken or if it works like it does because that's how it's made. One thing is if you turndown the drag all the way then the spool will not spin at all. And also it does this thing where when you reel in some line and stop, when you stop the reel crank will be allowed to rotate backwards a 16th of a turn before it stops. My new baitcaster reels dont do either of these things. The reel with questionable features is a little old now it's a Shimano Bantam Crestfire. Have you ever heard of these problems?

Yep, certainly sounds like it. Make sure debris is not stuck in the worm gear. Look at the teeth on each end and see if they are worn. May need to take the pawl out and check it too. Good luck man.

Sounds like too much dirt/ oil on the anti-reverse bearing. Are you sure the drag is tightened down too?

Yea, too much is not a good thing. But so is too little. I err on the side of just a bit more than needed and wipe the excess. Great point to bring up!
