Kindly check Rajan Parrikar's website as well as Patrick Moutal's. apart from the back issues of Record news, Rajeev Parked has a nice page of Old Hindustani discographies.

"Phagwa brij dekhan ko" was recorded by "Bhu Gandharwa" Ustad Rehamat Khan long before Ustad Abdul Karim Kham and Pandit Vishwadev Chatterjee. The same Todi bandish was also recorded earlier by Zohra Bai Agrewali; if I can recall correctly, it was sung as Darbari Todi.

Sorry. My memory betrayed me. Although Ustad Rehamat Khan recorded the same Malkauns bandish later recorded by Abdul Karim Kan and Vishmadev Chatterjee, but not this Paraj Basant. But my comment on Todi stands.

All the recordings mentioned by Kunal Ghosh were recorded much later - Zohrabai in 1910-11, Pandit Vishwadev Chatterjee after 1925 and Rehamat khan in 1919-21. One that I played is recorded in 1905 in Bombay on Ramagraph Disc Label. Hence the query - who taught these ragas to Miss Chanda Karvarkarin? She has over 50 songs on this label recorded during 1905-06

@@TheSuresh1952 Thanks for correcting me. I'm not a professional in this field and also totally depended on my memory. My comments on Malkauns relate to the recording of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of the mid thirties and not to the early last century ones, although I am not unaware of them; Pandit Vishmadev Chatterjee also recorded this song most likely in the thirties. To the best of our knowledge, sound recordings in the early days were mostly done in Calcutta and we have heard highly amusing stories about how the recordings were done in those days or even later. In any case, some brainstorming has been done. Thanks again for the same. PS : The sarangiya has great similarity with Ustad Bundu Khan, may enquire about him in the Suiwallah galli of the old walled city of Delhi.

@@TheSuresh1952 Very minor point. That particular Todi by Zohra Bai was marketed in 1909, as per record available with me. Of course, I may be wrong.

@@kunalghosh448 please see her discography here - pages 33-42 at dsal.uchicago.edu/books/trn/trn.php?volume=2001&pages=131#page/1/mode/1up and other related articles in the same issue. She was the unlucky gramophone singer who did not live to listen to her records when they were issued in Indian market. She was recorded from 1908-11 and died in 1913. Her discs were processed in Germany and came to Indian market after she passed away
