When I was in Barbados, I found so many interesting connections with my native New Orleans and our speech patterns. I say, "soft drink" and we also say that the devil is beating his wife when it rains when the sun shines." NOLA English is more related to British West Indian English than folk realize.

I'm Scottish and for a Caribbean accent I can hear the odd similarity in some words you pronounce. Not so much though in the terms you used which are often heard in Scotland like 'Spittin Image'
@caribbeanman33796 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there was some Scottish influence in the development of the Bajan accent, that's why the vowel-shifting sounds so Scottish. And just listen to how they do their R's. Definitely Scottish influences involved.

Sue Hoare that's because there were a lot of Irish indentured slaves in Barbados from back in the day
@MM-gp9mb3 жыл бұрын
@@aceheru7855 indentured servants*, not slaves. An indentured servant is an unpaid worker who signed up for it as a form of punishment basically. It's not the same as being a slave. Slaves were literally ripped from their homes and forced into labour. Two totally different things.
@aceheru78553 жыл бұрын
@@MM-gp9mb Yes you're correct I meant servant not slave, but there did not go there voluntary they were sent there by the king of Ireland due to the potato famine...
@MM-gp9mb3 жыл бұрын
@@aceheru7855 Yes but I just dont like when people say the irish were "slaves" cuz it creates alot of confusion, the definition of indentured servant is someone who agreed to work for free as basically a form of punishment/debt/compensation for a number of years. Its not the same as being ripped from your homes and families and forced into unpaid labor just because ur skin color is perceived to be inferior.

I have to confess that I was misled by the title of the video. LOL. I thought you'd be speaking Bajan Creole (as linguists would call it), which is different from Barbadian English, the dialect of English you guys speak in Barbados and the one, I believe, you're using now, because I can understand everything you say (and English is my second language). My bad. You're just doing the regular (English) accent tag challenge. I mean, If you threw at me something like "I gaw guh long", I wouldn't have a clue what you mean without me having previously learned what it means. And I also have to confess that, like some other people, I came here after listening to Rihanna's Work song. LOL. I thought she was singing in Bajan Creole, given that she's from Barbados, but I've read a lot of people say and seem to agree that she's actually singing in Jamaican Creole, or as Jamaicans would call it themselves, Jamaican Patois. BTW, I like your accent.

My parents are both born in Liberia but some people don't know the huge impact Barbados has on Liberia. One of the presidents of Liberia was Bajan born and raised in Bridgeport and a lot of the people from Barbados moved to Liberia and we have many towns that were established from people in the 1800's and early 1900's so I consider myself both because I have some ancestors from there even though everyone is from Africa I just love learning more about myself! As a full Bajan from Barbados do you find it wrong that I consider myself Bajan? Did you k ow anything about the involvement Bajans had in Liberia and vise versa?? A lot of Liberians are in Barbados as well and we both influenced each other's culture.(for example cassava bread)

Question: What word do you use to address a group of people? The purpose of the question was to find out if you say: you, y'all, y'all 'uns, youse, you guys, or, my favorite, "y'all folk", which I learned from a Bajan coworker who studied four years in Alabama at a traditionally black college. What a unique accent that was!
