Salt bread is a traditional bread made in Barbados. It is a popular bread to eat with fish cakes, cheese cutters or ham cutters.
6 1/2 cups of white flour
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 packs of yeast
2 1/4 cups of warm water
DIRECTIONS
Sift half of the flour and mix with salt and yeast in a large mixing bowl and slowly add warm water, mixing continually until the mixture forms a stiff dough, keep adding more sifted flour until you have a dough stiff enough to knead.
Lightly flour the work surface, and knead dough for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic, then place in a greased bowl. Now place bowl in a warm place for 40-50 minutes until it has doubled in size. You know dough is ready, when you poke a finger in it and the indentation remains.
Pre hear oven to 425 degrees F or 220 degrees C.
Now divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each one into a fist size ball and place on a greased baking sheet, now place in a warm place again for a further 40 minutes or again until the dough has doubled in size.
Now place in the center of the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.

Good morning Sar, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost both your parents at such a young age. I cant imagine how difficult that must have been and probably still is. You have to celebrate with them in mind, every time a holiday or an event comes around think about what their would have done or what they would want you to do. All parents want they kids to be happy, so you being happy and smiling makes them look down on you with a smile. Keep that smile all the way through 2021 and be bless.

As usual you have aced it. You is a true Bajan with ya f instead of if ..lol....that’s what makes your show so authentic. Great memories about the jukking board..didn’t have to use it but know what it is and would always try to use it. Tip..when you are finish “kneading” 😀 the dough, roll it in the shape of a log, cut it into 3 pieces, then cut each piece into 4 pieces..that gives you a quick even 12 pieces. You have inspired me to make some this weekend. Keep up the great work.

Tinaraine Thanks for your response. I am a Bajan living in NY and as you would expect I grew up on salt bread. I have a question for you. As you may remember salt bread back in the day was made with a piece of palm leaf struck in it. Do you know the reason for this? Did it enhance the taste in anyway?
@Tinaraine
@Tinaraine 3 жыл бұрын
@@antoinettewilkinson3308 I do not know the answer to that question, I personally don't think it did anything to enhance the taste, I believe it was just a tradition, just like putting a match stick in the baby's hair when they had the hiccups lol. You now have me curious so I called a couple people living in Barbados, to do some investigating.If I get any answers to that info I will let you know.

Thank you. I spent only one month there living in a house we rented at Glitter Bay, not fancy, but with a mango tree in the yard. I remember the pan de sal and the fish fries in the surrrounding areas. Do you know McGill's field station there? Bell-airs. I miss the afternoon swims and drinks on the beach in the late afternoon. @Tinaraine
@Tinaraine 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Velcia, Good night hope you had a fantastic day. If you mix your bread in the mixer or you knead it by hand, it still takes about10 mins either way, the reason is the gluten in the dough need to be stretch, to make the bread nice and soft soft, Hope this answered your question. Thanks for watching

My mom’s from the The Dominican Republic And she told me stories of her and her cousins washing their clothe at the river with those metal grates and then starch the clothe with Yuca water. I’m 1st generation American so I remember the first time I went over and had to fetch water to bathe in the outside shower. Love your channel my husband family Bajan but all these food staples were lost with his grandma and great grandma so I try to learn so I can make it for him and his uncles since we don’t have no Bajan restaurants in The BX, NY. Blessings

Hi Ruth, those were the days, certain things I'm doing remind me of growing up in Barbados, we did not wash our clothes in a river but we used a big tub, and something we called a junking board. and yes we starched our clothes with the yuca water, which is also called cassava in the islands. i appreciate you watching my channel and hope you are able to try some of my dishes.

Hi Tinaraine,I feel like I'm ready to try saltbread after watching your video, however I have one question. Did you find that they were hard the next day or so you have any recommendations on how to keep them soft overnight?
@Tinaraine
@Tinaraine 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the bread gets hard the day after, the best way to keep them fresh is to freeze them, if you'll be using them within 3 day or so. when you take them out of the freezer you put them in the oven and it will be like you just baked them. IF you are not freezing them keep them in an airtight container. Hope this helped
