When you’re playing the Em arpeggio, I’m hearing a descending me-re-do on the recording. In capoed position, G, F#,E on the high E string. It might be that second guitar, but it’s clear on the first verse while he’s singing “bus stop click.” I think I can maybe also hear the low ascending arpeggio, but damn it sounds like one guitar.
@snoozedoctor7 ай бұрын
It's two guitars, one doing the descending and the main guitar doing ascending. I'm always stunned how Ian could play two guitar parts in perfect timing. He frequently overdubbed two guitars playing the same thing and he always nailed it. That's extremely difficult!

Sir, I am so incredibly grateful to you for your patient and meticulously detailed tutorials. I came to Jethro Tull comparatively late, in 1978 at the age of 13. Over the years since then, as a sometime student of the guitar, I have, from time to time, attempted and unfortunately failed to duplicate what I heard on the records and when the needle was practically playing both sides, the replacement cds. I mention this to emphasise the fact that I am VERY familiar with all of these songs and their many companions. One of the things that I absolutely LOVE about your activity is that your covers and especially the tutorials have made me listen again in a new way and your structural analysis has refreshed my listening as well as re-kindled my interest in my often neglected guitars. Once again, I am really, really grateful and I hope you will continue to publish the results of your studies. Should you at any time in the future turn your attentions the The Witches Promise, or attempt to penetrate the layers of The Whistler, I am probably not the only one of your followers who would enjoy what you have to say/play.

Hey doc! Just listened to your complete version of Baker st. So awesome-- I've been working on pt. 1of this lesson for a while now and am looking forward to your next installment. Also, I have been working for over a year on and of and straight though this summer college break on your TTAB lessons . Would you have time add some lessons from your "full arrangements" you played for us to your existing lessons of sides 1 and 2? Maybe the same for Baker st? Your interpretations are excellent. Maybe that might be a bit to difficult and time consuming due to complexities . I would certainly understand. You are doing your fans like me a great service!!! Thank you !!!! I believe your velvet green tutorial was a combination of his acoustic guitar parts and instrumentals you picked out. I pretty much got that and it feels complete. I guess i am having trouble patching together the acoustic segments of TTAB without the instrumental interpretations. Maybe i'm missing how to patch just the acoustic parts together. Does that make any sense? I hope so. I wish i were better at picking songs out from recordings . The shorter songs that you have put out in 15- 20-25min lessons are all presented clearly and logically . Full songs all great, challenging and hard work. I just need to keep practicing them. Just wondering if you might be able to share some guidance. Thanks for all your time and energy. I hope this was not to confusing. ✌. Matt. PS. I am getting an Orangewood cutaway so I don't have to worry about hauling my expensive martin around just to practice at the beach.🎸🎵🎶🏖

Hi Matt. I do enjoy working out guitar arrangements of the instrumental sections. It's very challenging since many of the passages don't translate easily to acoustic guitar. I've played by ear my whole life. I can read music but VERY slowly. I've always been patient though and if I can slow the music down somehow, I can generally get close to the notes and chords. This, in large part, is made possible by the YT player's gear icon down in the lower right corner that lets you change the speed of playback without affecting the pitch. Wow, if you learned that Velvet Green arrangement, you've accomplished something. That was a bugger. I have received a fair number of requests for a more complete tutorial on TAAB side one so I'll put that in the queue. Cheers!

Thanks for the response so quickly. I cant read a note. All by ear too. Yes, I use the gear icon to along with headphones for your lessons. Picked out a Bruce Cockburn tune that way once. I am just today slowing down your Baker st demo to try to get a handle on it. Quite a mission. Thanks again and cheers from Santa Cruz.!😊

So after my previous comment, I did not realize that Baker st muse was broken up unto 4 sections!!!!. Spaced that all together after all these years. Thank you so much for posting the sections!! I was looking for a part two not realizing that fact. Got my work cut out for a while. Awesome! Your the Man

Hey snoozedoctor, how do you play the picking? Do you play down-up-down just like Thick as Brick or do you just play down down down? Thanks for this fantastic tutorial, never thought I'd be able to learn this but here I am trying

On the arpeggio I'm just doing down-down-down. I don't think Tull ever performed this live so there is no video of him playing it. Usually I'll use video of him playing to guide me.

Another great tutorial. Thank you for sharing. Just a comment regarding the chorus: I think you're taking one step too long on the hammer ons on the D string while singing "Didn't make her.." or perhaps the strumming is correct, but he starts singing the next verse earlier (listened to your performance again to check if it wasn't just in the tutorial). Looking forward to part 2.
@snoozedoctor3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure exactly what part that is, but chances are I'm off somewhere. This one is really hard to feel in the choruses. The electric part comes in one beat later than you think it should. Ian was always writing odd measures.
@BIZEB3 жыл бұрын
@@snoozedoctor I apologize for not being clearer in my comment. When you are doing the hammer on/pull off on the D *chord* right after singing "Didn't make her..", you should resume singing "With my Baker St Ruse" before you stop the hammer on/pull off, instead of stopping and then singing, or at least that's what it sounds like to me while listening to the original recording.
