Hi Icey! Firstly, thank you for the congrats on the subscribership. I really have fun making these videos. Yeah, the mountains are so pretty in those sections that you called out. CA SR 178 is one of those narrow, two-lane, roads that hugs the canyon for a while. That always makes me a bit nervous. Locals to Lake Isabella don't give it another thought most of the time. Once you get high enough, the highway opens up to four lanes and it goes away from the Kern River, so it's less nerve-racking at that point. I am particularly cautious around steep drops. It's just one of those things that makes me nervous when driving. For instance, my sister went to Lake Hume and had a good time a few years go, so I then decided to check it out a few weeks later. But what she didn't tell me is that in order to drive into the area, you are on basically a ledge that has a drop of a few thousand feet. Yikes! It's just one of those things for me. My wife is afraid of snakes, whereas I used to run in the Burbank Hills (Verdugo Hiils) right by rattle snakes all the time. It doesn't bother me. But a long drop? Nope! I hate to think of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when they had to jump off of that cliff into the river! Lol Thank you for watching. -Fred : )

One of my favorite scenic roads in the state, which I have driven about once a year for the last four decades. But, I start at the intersection of CA184 (Lamont) and continue to campgrounds above Kernville.

It's an amazing road, how they cut it through the canyon. I was just telling another subscriber that I'm not crazy about taking it when it's busy because people really cut the corners (the yellow line) a lot, and they pass on the two lane portion of it, which is crazy. But it's definitely a phenomenon of engineering. I've never taken the 184 north out of Lamont. I'll do that sometime. I was just in Kernville enjoying Cherly's Diner. It was just about a month ago or so before the weather turned, and I was with three other people and we sat at their outside picnic type tables and really enjoyed our afternoon there. Happy New Year, Jim! -Fred : )

dangerous river and highway...

Hi John, I totally agree with you. I normally go via the 58, through Caliente, through all of those meadows and hills, and then drop into Lake Isabella from the southeast. Or.. through Glenville on the 155. But on this day that I recorded this drive, which was Thanksgiving 2022, there was so little traffic, that I decided to do what I rarely do and use the 178. Hoping you had a nice Christmas, John. -Fred : )

Hi Javier, I drive the speed limit. I speed up the videos as I'm editing them to give people a sense of the topography in an efficient time. On this road in particular, you have to be really, really careful. CA SR 178 up to Lake Isabella is a very narrow, winding road on the western portion of it, and there are a lot of rocks and such that jut out from the sides of the canyons. So one has to really stay at the speed limit on this road. Thank you for watching the video! -Fred : )
