Baking Apple Cake, Nature Reads and a Mystery Book

It's Friday, so it's time for this week's 'Tea Reads' episode! In this video, I'm joined by my Mum (Donna), and we share our regular Friday routine of a teatime chat about books over tea and a sweet treat. In our 'Tea Reads' episodes, we'll be sharing great short reads that can be enjoyed in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. In today's episode, we bake a Dorset Apple Cake (an old family recipe) and chat about some recent nature reads and a brilliant P.D. James short story in front of a roaring fire.

DORSET APPLE CAKE RECIPE:
Ingredients:
8 oz. self-raising flour
4 oz. butter (at room temperature)
4 oz. caster sugar
1/2 lb. cooking apples, peeled, cored and diced
Grated rind of one lemon
2 medium eggs, beaten
2 oz. sultanas
1 tsp. ground cardamom
Method:
Preheat oven to 375 F or 190 C and grease an 8 inch cake tin. Line the bottom of the tin with greaseproof paper. Mix the flour and cardamom in a large bowl and then rub in the butter by hand, until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Next, stir in the sugar, apples, lemon zest and sultanas and then add in the beaten eggs. Mix well with a spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin and cook in the oven for 35-45 minutes.
