Baking Mischief! Kid-Friendly Chocolate Owl Cookie Recipe

Hey friends! Today, we're showing you how to make chocolate owl cookies with our 3-year-old daughter, Sophia. We have a super fun and easy recipe that even the littlest bakers can enjoy. We'll start by mixing together eggs, peanut butter and water. Then add in some chocolate cake mix. Then, we'll shape the dough into cute little owls, add M&Ms and bake them.
Sophia loves eating the M&Ms right off of the cookies, making them look like scary owl cookies with no eyes! And my husband also makes lots of funny owl puns throughout the video. We hope you have as much fun watching this video as we had making these cookies!

Chocolate Owl Cookie RECIPE:
Ingredients:
-3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
-2 eggs
-1/3 cup water
-1 box of chocolate cake mix
-1/4 cup sugar
-plain M&Ms
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Beat the peanut butter, eggs and water until smooth
3. Gradually stir in the cake mix until a cookie dough is formed
4. Scoop 2 tablespoon sized cookie balls and place them on a lined baking sheet
5. Place sugar in a small bowl
6. Wet the bottom of a glass and dip it in the sugar. Then gently flatten each dough ball.
7. Pinch out two ears at the top and a chin at the bottom of each cookie.
8. Add M&Ms for the nose (sideways) and eyes (flat)
9. Bake 9-11 minutes
10. Place cookies on a cooling rack to cool.

You can smear just a tiny bit of oil into the spoon before you pour the peanut butter. Stops it from sticking 😊

Or do water displacement. In a large measuring cup, measure out 1 cup of water, then add the peanut butter to the amount needed. So 1/3 cup of peanut butter means the water would rise to 1 1/ 3 cup level.

That was a fun video!! Love how Sophia spills the water and hatches the eggs. You can measure peanut butter more easily by either wiping the measuring cup with some oil or you can put an equal amount of water in a liquid measuring cup and then add the peanut butter until you have the amount you need. Eg. for 1/2 cup PB, put 1/2 cup water in measuring cup and then add peanut butter until the mixture measures 1 cup. This will give you 1/2 c peanut butter. For 1 cup add peanut butter to 1 cup of water and when the mixture reaches 2 cups, you will have 1 cup of peanut butter. Ha Ha, some dad jokes are so corny they can be canned!!

You can get a push up cup that will do multiple measurements, all you need is to adjust and then push out the honey or peanut butter, etc.

Two ideas for you spray or wipe a little oil in your measuring cups for sticky stuff and it comes out easier and egg shell goes to egg shell so if you get egg in your ingredients take a bigger part of the egg shell and touch it on the piece in your bowl it’s like a magnet magic every time ❤🎉

People eat raw eggs all the time nowadays. Years ago the issue with eating raw cookies or cake batter was because often people used cracked eggs. I think she will be 100% ok, but I grew up hearing the same thing, and under no circumstances will I try raw dough or batter of any kind. I loved how witty and wise Andrew was in this video. 😍

If you want to bake more cookies with your leftover M&Ms, try substituting them for chocolate chips in your favorite choc chip recipe. My Mom made these for decades and we all loved them. Our mom always told us we couldn't lick the bowl or spoon because of "raw egg" and "salmonella." We did it anyway. All the time. Zero effects from it. Worst infection we ever got as kids was chicken pox. No, it's not safe, but not a guarantee of harm, either.

If your recipe calls for oil as well as something sticky, measure the oil first and then the sticky ingredient will come out easier. Or spray the measuring cup or spoon with cooking spray. So nice to see you cooking together. Sophia is getting so grown up! She’ll be fine btw

You need the twist base measuring cup. Oxo good grips or kitchen art. You make the cup the right size, fill it then it's like a syringe at the base pushing the sticky stuff out.

There is a measuring cup that is similar to a push pop. You adjust the size, fill it with your ingredient and then push it out. It's suppose to be a lot easier for things like peanut butter.

I love that you include your daughter when you making food even cookies. You could substitute a ripe banana mashed up for the eggs so you get a sort of peanut butter and banana cookies or even applesauce instead of the egg. And honestly your daughter was right I would have just switched out the water for milk it would actually make it better. But that looks like good cookies and the key is you enjoyed making it together as a family.

Dear Bridget, I get to share what I learned in home economics/home ec 😁 daddy (allowed only one semester when I was 13... said mom would teach me /yeah, what he'd taught her... she couldn't boil water when they married🤭) mummy didn't know this either ☺️... Get a much larger glass measuring cup (maybe 4 cup) if you need 1 1/4 cup of something like peanut butter or actual butter (?) put 2 cups ice cold water in glass measuring cup spoon in semi-solid ingredient until water level reaches the 1 1/4 mark 🤗 pour the water off & use rubber scrapper to get ever bit of your peanut butter (soft ingredient) into your recipe 🥰 Don't worry about raw egg 🥰 mummy used to make snow ice & she always put a mixed egg sugar & vanilla in it ... don't ask me why 🤷‍♀️ I've no idea, but it was yummy & we never got sick from it ☺️ that was back in the '50's ☺️ of course grandmother helped mummy too & it may have been her recipe ... daddy was youngest of her eight children ♥️🙏🏼♥️

If you put a little cooking spray in your measuring spoons or cups peanut butter, honey, etc. should come out easily. If you put a damp cloth or silicone mat under your mixing bowl it won’t move around when you’re mixing.
