BAKOTA - Bakota is the ancient capital of the Lowlands, or Middle Transdnistria. This is a region situated along the left bank of the Dniester River.
Nowadays it is the southern part of the Ternopil, Khmelnytsky and Vinnytsia oblasts. In the 13th century, Bakota had about one thousand five hundred inhabitants, and including the surrounding settlements, their number reached five thousand people. At that time, the population of Bakota was about a third of the population of Kyiv. The city was an important trading port on the Dniester River.
There is no single version of the origin of the name of this place. It is attributed to Old Slavic, Romanian-Moldovan, Hungarian, Turkish, Indian and even African origins. For many centuries, until 1940, Bakota was a border settlement and was repeatedly destroyed by invaders. The remains of the ancient St. Michael's Cave Monastery, which gave refuge to Orthodox monks at the end of the 11th century, are well preserved in the rock above the Dniester.
But long before that there was a pagan temple here. In 1981, during the construction of the Novodnistrovskaya HPP, Bakota, along with several dozen surrounding settlements, was flooded by the Dniester waters. Due to its unique landscape, rich history and exceptional climatic conditions reminiscent of the south of the Crimean coast, this place has become a place of pilgrimage for many explorers and tourists.
