Slay the Spire is one of my favorite games but I also have a crippling gambling addiction so it’s safe to say that I fucking love this game.

I can't remember the time I've seen an indie game come out of nowhere and even before release had everyone just agreeing "this is going to be a big deal."

Shocking how quick it went from unknown to GOTY contender
@1TieDye111 ай бұрын
@@hotcyderi don’t think that is accurate lol mind you I don’t intend to be shitty here, but even if it wasn’t known to you or your circle, balatro has been getting attention since the first demo. I personally had over 100 hours between the two demos (though this is definitely inflated by idle time via playing while cooking, working, etc.) Edit: awesome vid though. I am glad the game it is getting good attention.
@Exarian10 ай бұрын
@@1TieDye1 I am counting this from the demo which is when I started playing. It wasn't hyped leading up to that. Usually this kinda thing doesn't really explode until after the full release, but it was going nuts from just the first demo.

I never thought there'd be a modern game that would make 52 deck cards fashionable again.

Can’t agree that this game will make people like rogue-likes. This game is addictive. It’s play loop is genius, the formulas that run this game form to the players style and makes every individuals experience with the game a unique one. This game won’t make people suddenly *get* Dead Cells or Hades. I own both and still don’t like them. I freaking love this game though. The developers have really done something special here.

I think turn based roguelike/ites are for me, such as Balatro and Backpack hero, they're relaxing actually. I can do a run or so a day instead of trying to choose between games.
@rattenkollektiv11 ай бұрын
The thing I love about Balatro is that its a game that wants to be broken, and simply integrates that into its wider structure. It isn't the first Roguelike to do this, it isn't even the first to focus on maximizing a score through multipliers, but it does so with absolute design brilliance, every card and joker having the potential to hit big

I like rogue likes like Loop Hero where I don’t feel like I’ve lost completely everything when I fail/die.

Welcome to the Rougelike Rabbit Hole! As you say, there's no feeling greater than getting a favourite/broken synergy - that adrenaline rush of all the planets aligning is the mutural sensation that poker and roguelikes share. Only difference is Balatro doesn't require you to hide behind a poker face when that happens. Thanks as always for the well made video and for another game recommendation that'll likely skip the wishlist and land straight into my checkout basket.

poker seems like a really good meta choice, as poker proves that even a completely random game can be won by someone who has a better game sense and skill, which it shares with roguelikes

Great point. Poker really does fit the rogue-esque mindset. Nice insight.

Discovery is the greatest part of any roguelike, there is one that is a bit "unpopular" that I think you should look at, it is called; ADIOS Amigos, a roguelike where you explore strange star systems, and it's co-op ready.

I have a complete love/hate relationship with roguelikes. Some days I would devour them and go on and on, others I would get frustrated and die over and over. I still remember playing games like Binding of Isaac the morning before one of my GCSE exams and finally killing Mom (Yes I was terrible) Balatro looks interesting, condensing down the roguelike experience into a smaller, less angering loop. Cheers for an excellent video on this interesting game.
