Tarikh Episode 505
In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil narrates the history of invention of the incandescent light bulb, Yes, Thomas Edison is commonly credited with inventing the practical and commercially viable electric light bulb. Although he was not the first person to create a light bulb, his design was the most successful and had a significant impact on the widespread adoption of electric lighting.
In 1879, Edison and his team at the Edison Electric Light Company developed a long-lasting, practical incandescent light bulb. Their design utilised a carbon filament that could glow for hours without burning out. Edison also worked on improving other components necessary for the functioning of electric lighting, such as the electrical distribution system and the development of a practical electric power station.
The Phoebus Cartel was an international agreement formed in the 1920s by major light bulb manufacturers to control the global light bulb market. The cartel included companies from various countries, including General Electric, Philips, and Osram. Its primary objective was to standardise and limit the lifespan of incandescent light bulbs to maximise sales and profits. By artificially reducing bulb lifespans, they aimed to ensure frequent repurchases. The cartel faced scrutiny for alleged anti-competitive practices and was dissolved in the 1930s. While the extent of their influence is debated, the Phoebus Cartel remains a notable example of corporate collusion and planned obsolescence in the lighting industry.
