Hi thank you so much for your very helpful videos so easy to follow. We discovered that our terminal block was fried on one corner thus melting the plastic and therefore the hot tub stopped working. I'm wondering is there any point in replacing the terminal block or do you think there's a chance it may typically have damaged the rest of the board.? I can send a photo to you. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at the photo .. I would appreciate it as it could save us a lot of money. 👍

Thanks a lot! Helped me to get around a burned out terminal to route a new wire for one leg of my heater. Would have cost me $500 for a new board.

I just replaced the heater element and reconnected everything. Tub worked great for a couple of weeks then I noticed the electrical burn smell. Opened it up and both power points left and right are burned on the circuit board. Looks like the copper leads are toast as well and the heater point ceramics are burnt. Is this really from a poor tightening on the board and/or the heat element? The tub still worked but the damage looks like I need a whole heater assembly now and if I can't fix the circuit board that is a whole lot of money.

The gauge seems a bit small on those jumpers compared to what my other jumpers are (12 awg)... A local repair shop suggested even going 10 awg for the heater connections (replacing the copper straps)

My friend! Recently my hot tub stopped heating. I confirmed the heater was OK and moved to the controller. O found that there was the same phase of 120V on both sides of the heater meaning no power to the heater. What would cause this? A bad relay or a bad solder joint? What is the easiest way to check/confirm? Where might a source a relay? Thanks!

Great video! I have a hot springs spa I'm working on. Just replaced the heater (cracked end cap) and still no heat. I removed the heater relay board and saw the one pin on the k1 relay was burnt out. Is this a relay I can jump safely and if so how?
@kansaskeithbrown4 жыл бұрын
If the connectors started to burn the relay (on the right side) is that relay bad? That’s what happened in my case. Or can I still jump from it? Wondering if I also need to replace that relay. This video is so helpful! Thanks for your knowledge! I’m a new hot tub owner and like fixing things myself when possible.

Great videos! I replaced the heater tube and didn't tighten the HTR2 connection well which unfortunately burned a hole through the board. I'd like to jump it but the relay (JTN1S-PA-F-DC15V) on that side is sealed and and doesn't have a visible tab. This is a Balboa Keys100DR1A board. Any help here? Thanks!

Great video, this has happened to me a couple times and glad I saw your video. Any reason why these burnouts happen?
@mrtechnophile3483 Жыл бұрын
Heat cycling, any moisture and time = oxidation, flexing, maybe the connections work loose. Once the connection starts becoming higher resistance, well, the heating element is just a resistor, about 10 ohms. If the current doesn't change too much, figure 24 Amps. Power in the connection is the current squared (call it 570) times the connection resistance. Say the connection resistance is 0.001 ohm. That's 0.57 Watts. Say the connection resistance gets up to 0.1 ohm. Now you have 57 watts. The heat makes the copper oxidize more, and the connection even worse. Now instead of 5.5 kW in the element, you get a bit less power in the element and more and more heat in the connection, except the connection doesn't have flowing water to cool it. You've seen an incandescent light bulb. They glow white hot with that much power.

Great Videos. I have a problem and can't - just bought an expensive new Balboa board for my tub - worked for a while now it makes a scary shorting noise. Noise goes away when the red wire is disconnected but black is left in. Have a formal background in electronics and some electrical and a working knowledge in both. I measure 34 Ohms between neutral and black even when the board in on the table - which to me sounds like a (the) short. Can't find any videos in your bunch for something like this any ideas?

I tested the same 2 areas with my ohmmeter and no sound. I tested both heater prongs on the board and it’s not reading any power. Does this mean that the control board is bad?

This is great! BUT, what causes this in the first place? Is there anything I should check on/in the heater to make sure it's not shorting out

@mrtechnophile3483 Жыл бұрын
Time, heat, moisture, vibration from the pumps and oxidation will increase the connection resistance. With power OFF, maybe check that the connections are tight every couple of years.

We tried this method. Jumping the wires is this why the temperature keeps going up to 100 or higher even though it’s set for 98 and the hot tub shuts off completely? Also the 2 black boxes with the little wire connected to them can those be replaced? What is the purpose of those 2?

Wondering about relay for the left side. I would like to purchase one that has a tab to connect to, can you please post a link for a replacement relay, looks just like the one you had on video..
I have the same board and I’m curious about the relay above the one you jumped on. I had to add a jumper from the 120v input on the upper relay to the input relay on the lower one. Is it bad to bypass the upper relay? What’s it for?
@mrtechnophile3483 Жыл бұрын
Probably the other relay is for 240V operation. Because 240V is essentially +/- 120V (opposite phases), if you only switch one side of a circuit (call it the +120V) then there's -120V on the heater etc. all the time. So the additional relay is switching the opposite phase, so it's 0V.

I have a new Balboa board for a downeast spa that I purchased for this same issue but after I connected all the wiring the same as the former board the display control panel wont energize. Was I to leave the wiring the same as they were when the board came in rather than format to mirror the old board? Or is this just one wire that's out of place? Please help.

i have a downeast exeter spa also and I have this burn issue after replacing a pump. Thankfully finding this fix hopefully saves me! Surprised that burn occurred from not tightening the nuts enough. Seems to simple but trying it today.

I replaced the element in 2018. Now, the heater won’t heat and I saw the board is burned on the right side (like your example). If I do this jumper, should I also replace the element? The element lugs look clean.
@spaguyhowto74178 ай бұрын
Leaving he connections lose damage the board but usually not the element.. The jumper does not repair every situation but will solve some of them..
@martinezhl7 ай бұрын
Thank you for the info. Was wondering if a fuse would help on the jumper wire that you sell? Just to prevent frying the relay if something happened. I looked at the heater lugs and the right one shows some rust on it. I’m guessing that’s what caused it to burn.

I just had this happen on a new board less than 6 months old. all connections were tight. Is there any other reason that could cause this problem? Faulty board? I saw your video on soldering the left side and replacing the relay which talks about the nut on the heater, mine is solid. So any other causes?
@mrtechnophile3483 Жыл бұрын
If the board was new but the copper jumpers to the heater were dirty or oxidized, seems like a probable cause.

What damage will you cause if you plug your spa directly into 240volt power outlets
@mrtechnophile3483 Жыл бұрын
Better have a GFCI. Electricity and water is bad news if (or, when) something breaks or goes wrong and the power finds a path through a human body to ground. With a GFCI, the breaker clicks off. Without a GFCI, you can get some level of shock; perhaps lethal.

Ive got a balboa BP501G1 (part#56487-02). I really wanted to include a pic... but dammit? The relays are not open (no tabs to hook onto). And, J101 (the extra tab on the circuit board below the left heater relay) doesn't test good. I recently soldiered 2 relays. (k-1 & k-3). K-1 was soldiered by a calspa repair tech 3 months ago... lasted that long (the problem was/is the left side heating unit) that worked for almost 3 months after $300 coospa tech fail. Now they're asshollios and tell me a new board $500 is needed. Can I hookup from J35 directly to the left element? I want you to say, Yes Katie, you are brilliant!" Or just give me a laugh and ill know how ignorant that was😚.
