Rumble. Has to be one of the weirdest mashbills of wildflower honey, figs, and sugar. I picked it up from a store that had it on sale for $20 dollars. Very rich and sweet flavors. Also has a viscous consistency. I would happily buy it again for msrp. If you'd like I could send you a sample if you'd like to try?

The Baby Blue is the only Balcones I've tried. I have a bottle of their pot stilled bourbon on its way to me. I'm looking forward to it.

They still don't feel that my state is worth selling to so no, not really, but I have managed a sample of their single malt and it's excellent. Would be welcome here. (And we don't usually say that about Texans.)

all of their malt whisky is great -- Hechiceros (port cask) and the peated malt are my favorites; thanks for bringing a Balcones classic to the table!

I actually enjoyed your “meandering” and your lack of adherence to a script. As a viewer, I could just tell you’re super honest in this!
@TheWhiskeyDictionary4 жыл бұрын
Interesting take. My patreom first tastes are like this but I usually go on a script on my reviews. Maybe it comes off a bit more forced than I want it to
@michaelbuckwash24124 жыл бұрын
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary No, you really did a great job. I just loved hearing you say the truth, "Hey, I prepare for these reviews, and I have my notes...but I'm going to be honest and not say them now because I am tasting different things!" It was really refreshing actually. Bravo!
@TheWhiskeyDictionary4 жыл бұрын
I'll keep that in mind for sure. So much effort goes into researching the distilleries and history and the tasting is secondary for me. Figuring things out is half the fun and maybe I should represent it a bit better
@hobbesfan41964 жыл бұрын
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I understood Michael is complimenting you for attempting a review on a known distillery to you but a youthful product that could by its nature simply defy description. We applaud the effort and the willingness to go off script. Keep up the good work and it's close but did you use that line on the misses? Inquiring minds are wondering because I honestly have not come across any woman who appreciates those two dudes.

Tried this for the first time last night. A friend asked me about it and I found it to be the most difficult whiskey in my cabinet to describe. Its good and I am glad to have it but I can't nail it down. I get a fig newton finish that I really liked

Tried this with a friend one time and we couldn't get away from the notion of candy corn. I wouldn't go out of my way to have it again, but if it's offered then do give it a try. Sometimes trying something out of the ordinary is a welcomed adventure. This is one of those little adventures

Have you tried Heaven Hills Mellow Corn? If you have, how does this compare to that? I've been seeing this in the store and have been contemplating buying for $33. The Mellow Corn is only $18 . Cheers!

I havent tried it yet. A lot of folks have suggested it and im pretty excited to try it now
@robertmckay5925 Жыл бұрын
Mellow Corn is good, but it still has a bit of sourness in it. The Baby Blue isn't at all sour - it drinks like a young bourbon. I enjoyed my bottle of Mellow Corn, but I don't know that I'll buy another one; I'm on my second bottle of Baby Blue and will definitely buy it again and again.

I got a lot of overripe fruit on the nose, and overripe fruit and brown sugar on the taste. I really loved it a lot!

I've had a different experience with the Baby Blue. I came to it when I was still new to whisky - I began drinking whisky on September 20, 2021, and I find via my review on Distiller that I had my first drink of it on January 26 of this year, so there's a gap of just four months between my first taste of whisky (since 1983, but that's a long story 🙂) and my first taste of the Baby Blue. I fell in love instantly. Indeed, of the four Balcones whiskies I've had, there's only one I haven't liked (the rye, which you did, but it was just sickly on my palate - tastes really do differ 🙃). It is indeed a fairly simple whisky, but it's not like any other corn whisky I've had. It's more like a young bourbon than other corn whiskies, entirely lacking the sourness that has to one degree or another afflicted the others I've tried. And if I were making up a list of whiskies I would recommend a newbie try, this would be on there. I don't find it at all harsh, but rather sweet and buttery and almost like a liquid candy. Thanks for reviewing this. Even when my opinion's different, I enjoy hearing what others think of juice that I like. 🥃
@TheWhiskeyDictionary Жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to write a thoughtful comment. What other whiskies do you think you'd put on that list?
@robertmckay5925 Жыл бұрын
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Now you're making me think! 😂 Most of my experience is with bourbon, but I'd say the five whiskies I'd recommend for newbies are: Balcones Baby Blue corn whisky (of course!) Maker's Mark bourbon Glenlivet 12 Scotch Bernheim wheat whisky Four Roses bourbon Those are my five favorites - what I like might be too high a proof, or too emphatic, for a newbie (for instance, I would never steer a newbie toward Laphroaig 10 🙂). But I do love the Baby Blue, the Bernheim, and the Maker's Mark.

This whiskey is different certainly but I don’t get why people hate on it so much. The flavors are actually pleasant to me. A warm toasted vanilla like crème brûlée, definitely buttery. It’s not a go to for me but it deserves a place on my shelf as an accent whiskey that provides a different experience. I see it everywhere in Texas so I guarantee there is a very healthy market for Baby Blue as it’s one of their oldest expressions.

Sometimes there are whiskies that challenge us. Great video Bill, it's very nice to see a raw and truthful video where you take us on that journey. Also liking the production values with the nosing/tasting notes!

I found the baby blue tasted like moldy corn when I first opened it up. Worked it down to about half way and left it for about six months. Tired it recently and now I get a real caramel note. Love their single malt though, one of my favorite American malts.

I bought a bottle of the True Blue quite awhile back. I gave it a B+, but noted that it tastes "very different." Although I gave it a reasonably good score, I've not wanted to buy another bottle. I don't consider it in my wheelhouse.
@joec.35894 жыл бұрын
Did you add a post reverb for the sound in this video? If so I think it's a bit too much. Kind of sounds like a spooky ghost in a haunted house trying to whisper to me after you finish talking. Maybe try a different setting for reverb like room or hall for a more natural sound? Side note: I'm loving this stock images for your tasting notes. I can't wait until one day I think "this tastes buttery" and the stock video for buttery comes to mind.
@TheWhiskeyDictionary4 жыл бұрын
I didnt hear any reverb at all. I have pretty nice headphones. I do a little audio correcting and it can have the effect you mention although its pretty minor. Id guess you either have REALLY nice headphones or a very discerning ear

One to keep an eye out for is the new Balcones Lineage Single malt. Goes for about $35 in TX. It’s a mix of Scotch style and Texas style. IMO it blows away any Scotch at the price.
