Bald eagle Legacy, the offspring of Samson and Gabrielle, has taken flight and has left the nest (As of 05/01/2021 Legacy returned to the nest). This video shows the young bald eagle checking out the surrounding area and finally deciding to see what the rest of the world looks like. Later on we see Legacy returning to the nest.

Where do they go when they leave? Do they make themselves a new home in another tree somewhere?

Hi Christopher, that's a great question. The answer depends on the eagle usually. There are some eagles that tend to stay close to the area they fledged and some who like to wander miles and miles (sometimes states) away from their home nest. We at the Foundation released a bald eagle in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee and years later it was spotted in Canada. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!

@@AmericanEagleFoundation Yes thank you. I was actually wondering what they do for the first night or two. Like where would they sleep initially since the nest is the only place they knew of until that point. I guess it's in their natural instinct to just fly off and quickly begin their independent lives on their own and they automatically know what to do. I find it fascinating.

Word is, legacy may have visited another nest in the area . maybe she was looking for friends. 🤗 she came rolling in and begged parents to come. They took their time. 😒

Do these Eagles reuse nests? Like...will Legacy have babies in a used nest? Or do they always build new?

Hi Cbass, great question. Bald eagles will usually keep going back to the same nest year after year for breeding season. When they reach sexual maturity, usually around five years of age, then they will build their own nest and the cycle begins.
