I'll be repairing a severely cracked John Deere hood, and I have a fantastic product to show you. This product can make the hood stronger than it was when it was new. I'll use a second hood as a donor to fill in the broken or missing pieces. If you want to learn more, welcome to the BALDEAGLE242 KZbin channel! I'll guide you through the repair process.
First, I use masking tape to hold the pieces together. Then, I used a hot staple tool (Not shown in this video) to connect the pieces while working on it. I then apply a unique product from Koverbond, which works on various materials. It comes with sandpaper, a razor blade, and an activator. The repair material is placed in the cracks, reinforced with mesh, and melts into the plastic.
Next, I cut out pieces from another hood to fix the cracks. If you don't have a spare hood, save the broken pieces for repairs. I show you the process of cutting and fitting the pieces. Then, I used Plastix-27 to strengthen the bottom and K-Bond body filler to fill and blend the cracks on the top. Finally, I sand the surface for a smooth finish.
This repair method is highly effective, and you can use the discount code BALDEAGLE242 for the Koverbond product in the video description. Join me in transforming this damaged hood into a durable masterpiece!

You could have gone over the top with a coat of two part putty which sands better and faster than body filler eliminating every scratch or mark left after the repair. That product you put on looked strong but hard meaning sanding would have been hard. Been doing body work since the 1980's and found the process works. With so many 3 and 5 ton trucks having fiberglass engine bonnets that need repairs we used liquid resin and fiberglass cloth to build the repair then short or long strand fiberglass body filler to go over that then finish it up with regular filler and two part right before primer. Worked like a charm fixing fiberglass.

I commented recently on your other video with some special filler rods you can use with the thermoplastic hoods JD uses. This is actually cheaper, and looks like a real option. Stapled the inside of the hood so wondering how to add this. If I jiggle it the crack does open up a bit. Think I could add filler while its open, then close it and run a line of activator along the crack? BTW, can you test if the activator actually disturbs the thermoplastic by itself? Not a biggie if it does a bit, I can always use their bondo as you showed. Put out some more video's, you're probably the only guy on YT who has this fix. Should get quite a few subs from word or mouth.
@baldeagle242
@baldeagle242 Жыл бұрын
@boots7859 I would first clean and sand the area around the crack. Remove any dust from the sanding. You should then add the mesh directly to the surface before the IRF. Once you have done this and have the pieces where you want them, add the Instant Reaction Fiber (IRF) over the mesh and crack. Compact the IRF down into the crack and mesh as well as you can. At this point, you're ready to apply the liquid Instant Activator. After applying the activator, the IRF/Activator combination will smoke and permanently bond to the plastic hood. This reaction only takes about 15-20 seconds, so make sure everything is where you want it before the activator is added. I have not noticed that this process negatively impacts the thermoplastic itself. On a few test samples I tried before making this video, the plastic broke in a completely different area than where the repair was made when I stressed it to the breaking point. I mentioned this in the video, but this material seems stronger than the original hood itself.

John Deere's eco-plastic just doesn't hold up with age. But, it can easily be glued with ABS plumbing cement and general purpose cleaner. Problem is, it is NOT ABS, and even with fiberglass cloth reinforcement, you end up with other breaks as it ages. I got tired of fixing my 345 hood (all repairs held up - it just found other places to break). Bought an ebay ABS replacement and expect it to hold up until the tractor dies.

John Deere should be forced to replace every one of those plastic shattering hoods for free with a fiberglass or metal one...no excuse for that, many of the plastic hoods on elcheapo mowers were less prone to shattering than those, and that's not saying much...same for the shattering plastic dashboards on the late 90's-early 2000's Dodge trucks...an occasional cracking problem is one thing, every single one made shattering to bits is another...
