that was literally the whole plan for the absolute by the dead 3. Basically the whole plan was to deprive the gods of the mortals who give them power & existence by using the illithid's ability to trap the mortal soul with ceremorphosis to prevent them from ascending to the afterlife plane of their chosen god as well as mind control-ing the world to only believe in the absolute and not any of the other gods (remember how the goblins abandoned their original god for the absolute?). It would then weaken every god but also make every god vulnerable which was what the dead three wanted, to finally kill them all or at least the ones on their hit list. Gale inadvertently just continued their plans. This is also why withers (jergal) is trying to help us as the balance of the world was in jeopardy and needed a champion.

But Larian making it so that a player who wants to control the Absolute as Gale still gets something out of it, namely "storm the Gates of the Heavens and destroy _all_ gods of Faerun". (Astarion would approve.) Although I can't see that endeavor ending well for Gale, esp since he isn't even ascended in this version, and Ao might have something to say about this... as would Jergal and Kelemvor if the souls of the dead no logner go to their worshipped gods but... where? Well, the alignment planes are still there, as is Limbo, as are the Lower Planes for the evil people, Gale might set up shop in the Upper Planes...

As much of a gale simp as i am personally, if left to his own devices Gale absolutely would go down this path (or at least become a god in a non-evil ending). Tav is basically the voice of reason that stops him from going this far. But, on his own, without anyone to convince him otherwise, he has enough pain and ambition within him to really drive him to the brink. If you dive really deep into his backstory (and honestly, dig into forgotten realms lore on Mystra) you could get a pretty good idea of how deep his pain likely goes. He thinks having more power is going to give him what he needs, what he's missed out on because of Mystra. At best, he becomes a neutral-aligned god. at worst, he just becomes evil jesus and causes havoc...all in the name of power. (but ofc, my HC is that he is just a sweet cinnamon roll of a man who needs love and cuddles b/c deep inside he's just a golden retriever, and he would never go this far.) But, everyone has their breaking point, and Gale is no exception. Which is the beauty of the game, really. Every character as a light and a dark side. If we simply let them loose like children in a candy store, we would have some very broken, misguided tadfools, intent on gaining power to rid them of the strife they are chained to.

@@MariaEsenina revenge for what? They did nothing bad to him

@@MariaEseninaGale doesn't really want "revenge" on gods. At leat not in this sense. Even god gale is less hostile. He did want to change the other gods mindset, but not destroying them. This is specific evil ending, not true ending

@@dorianleakey Oh really? Mystra used Gale for her own purposes the entire story, including as a lover, and then not only trashed him, but instructed him to sacrifice himself to defeat the Illithids because the gods are actually afraid of them! Shar and Selune in their feud poured rivers of blood playing people their games of chess. Bane's followers were organizing a tyranny, and Baal's goal was to humiliate everyone (Durge's ending). Gale witnesses all events, some affecting him personally, others affecting everyone, but only he has the intelligence and a plan to send the gods into retirement. And I can understand him, I don't like the gods too. Even "good" gods in practice creating only chaos, and mortals must solve each NEW problems for them? No! Gods will be abandoned and dead.

but why tho evil in this game is so dumb. should've just given us a montage of kicking puppies; makes just as much sense and is functionally the same payoff

How is this a bad ending? Just taking the Shar-Selune conflict you can see that gods and their great games are not healthy for anyone.
