The only realy issue i have with "Abilities" in BG3 is...or are,... how the *icons* are designed. Dun get me wrong, the "Symbols" make sense but _the background_ just beeing blank black,... makes me look at the bar 'searching' for the spell i want/need right now. Heck, to me they all have "same yellow, orange, blue,..." colores... there is nothing standing out, looking at the full picture (Skill bar) smt even seem to blure in each other looking like some long 4ss _"rune text"_ The icons to look at are "for me" the worsed exp in the entire game.

I get "hypnotized" and end up forgetting what i was searching for To fix that, i ha e a syatem of classification. Like, this row is cantrip. Then all my healing spells. Then my damage. I ha e 1 of thise for each of the character. It helped me fix that problem. Hopefully it can help.

One tip for casters is to keep all your Concentration spells in a different section of your bars, or perhaps in the Custom section entirely. Since you can only have one Concentration spell active at a time, it’ll help you avoid ending one accidentally. It also lets you easily see the opportunity cost of a specific Concentration spell by comparing them all at a glance.

Regarding your spells being grayed out - Another common reason is that you have armor equipped that you are not proficient in. You can still equip it, but it'll apply certain penalties, such as blocking your spellcasting. This also applies to gloves, boots and helmets, which can also count as Light, Medium or Heavy armor. One time I had Wyll with all his spells greyed out and I couldn't figure out why for like half an hour. Turns out, I gave him gloves that were classed as Medium armor.

It's worth pointing out for new players that there are so many scrolls around for your casters - use them! Being out of spell slots doesn't mean the end of a fight :) In such cases a well-timed Misty Step or Stinking Cloud can make all the difference. I keep my scrolls in a pouch that I have in my action bar. That way you can easily check your options during your turn, without the UI getting cluttered.

My understanding is that any character can cast a spell from a scroll. If so, does that character's Intelligence ( or other attribute ) play any part in the success of a spell cast from a scroll? Preferable to have a flame Wall spell cast by a Wizard character, as opposed to a Barbarian? .. asking for a friend.

As someone who knew close to nothing about dnd, especially all the technical aspects of the tabletop game, these videos have been extremely helpful, and I definitely feel more knowledgeable about it now. I've always wanted to get into dnd and this game is literally the perfect start for me. I'll have to wait until the ps5 release to really get a feel for. Which I'm actually glad there was a delay for ps5 because now I'll be going into the game at least knowing what the majority of the mechanics are instead of going in and being overwhelmed with the amount of information and details there are. Any and all guides are welcome, and I can't wait for more build videos that will help me get a better understanding of the theory crafting potential in this game.

It is worth noting that BG3 does alter tabletop's rules a fair amount. Many longer lasting spells were extened to "until long rest", unique attacks from different weapon types were actually added- normally fighters just attack and nothing else, and the entire Alchemy system is unique to BG3.

To add to the last tip of the video, you can end a concentration spell at any time even if its not your turn in combat, it can be very useful if your melee character want to engage an enemy and you have your wall of fire or a pike growth in the way

@@dannysandoval8296 press H on the keyboard, if you play on console I’m afraid I don’t know what button to press then. H will bring up the alchemy menu, and then you can switch to the spellbook menu for wizards, clerics, druids and probably some other class I’ve now forgotten.

For the life of my character who’s a Sorcerer and first time playing the game, I could not figure out how to use Spell Slots and the extra Spell. I’d click on it and it say confirm something and no idea clicking all over the place. So much appreciated at almost level 5 for the video and all the other explanation as haven’t figured it out yet until listening thus video. And apparently been breaking concentration all over the place. Really a lot to learn in the game.

Thanks, coming from div2 I truly had no idea what was going on as a sorcerer. I only played a spellcaster once in div2 and figured I could get the hang of it. I was wrong. I wish the game would offer a brief tutorial for the more in depth playstyles of different classes.

thank you for provind a way to end concentration. once killed my entire party because i used spike growth for combat, won with 5hp each, and directed my party to walk to a location across the surface and they all died because of the movement dmg :)

That IS a problem..I like to immediately click onto ' Turn Based Mode ' to stop the Partys suicical stampede thru the hazardous areas/ spells before I can cancell them. I also disband the Party when exploring new areas and finding/ disarming Traps. If you don't disband , the Party will stampede around you, obscuring & triggering Traps while you're trying to find/ disarm them. 😬🦧🏴‍☠️

I haven't played a game like this since 2006 I think when we had Neverwinter Nights 2 . Played so many mainstream AAA games that getting into this one is really challenging . It is however one the best games ever . Still cannot believe something like this exists... I spend more time watching tutorial videos than playing the game itself lol. Very helpful video. Thanks, that was really helpful. I was getting confused between spell slots and preparing spells. Because I didn't know the ruleset I kind of assumed that a spell is prepared once, and then can be used once until you rest. But I see why they did it this way, it's to force you to take spells of different levels into battle so the old ones don't become redundant, it prevents you from just preparing all high level spells because you can't downcast. I wish there was some kind of tutorial for this in game because I sank about 10 hours into this trying to work it out before I finally searched for a guide.

When you learn most of it it becomes very interesting. Tactically great combat . Problem is , best way to learn is play and some reading or video as you go and than you just want to start new game but there is to much spoiled and you need to go hours and hours ,which are days of play to get where you stopped. Little better tutorials for new players as a option in setting is what game needs .

There’s some gear that lets you restore spell slots which is super useful. I have two such items so on my wizard can effectively cast multiple level 5 spells in a fight

Got an interesting gimmick for buffs and spell memorization. There's a lot of buffs, like Mage Armor or False Life, that will dispel themselves if you ever remove them from your prepared spells list. However if you up cast them this will prevent the dispel. False Life has the added benefit of giving more HP at the same time, but Mage Armor will otherwise still function the same. For Ritual spells like Longstrider you can up cast for free outside of combat, so your entire party get its benefit all day long at no cost.

Tips also for warding bond, you can use one of your benched member or hireling to cast that on you, sure they will die and buff will be gone but i reckon reviving a party member doesnt cost too much starting at late act 1

Magic Missile is unique in that it requires neither an attack roll or save; if the targets are within range and the caster can see them, the projectiles will hit and do damage unless the targer casts Shield as a reaction.

a bit of an fyi for anyone using the ritual spells they can be used outside but can only be used once before you take a rest its easily stated in speak with animals but find familiar is subtle. also you must prepare the spells in order to cast them as a ritual.

advice for anyone who is playing a wizard or has a wizard companion. Always keep at least one copy of a scroll since money comes pretty easy in this game you can have your wizard copy the spell scroll into your spell book. Lord knows that my friend, and I found a scroll of haste in an area and copied it. Especially if your wizard is the same school as the spell, you’re copying, the Spell will be cheaper to copy. Example, if you find a scroll of burning hands, then the cost for coppying, it will be cut down if you are an avocation wizard. Also, for any of my DND players out there you can change spells out whenever you want. You don’t have to constantly take a long rest to swap spells out, that was just force of habit for me at the beginning of the day after we long rest to swap spells around.

Yep this is super handy. Open your spell panel with the K key, and it's a button on the right, if you have the scroll in your inventory and you don't already know the spell it will give you the option to learn in, for a fairly small cost of gold. This also means that if you really badly want a specific spell you can go to vendors and seek out scrolls (if you don't already have them) and it allows you to get more of what you want, faster.

As a note, I have noticed that in BG3 Eldritch Knight, and Arcane Trickster are actually Cha based for their spell casting. I'm not sure if there are things that can change that in BG3, but you can see what their Spellcasting modifier is based from in the spell list section when you level up and take those subclasses. This is Different from DnD 5E where these two subclasses are Int based. I tried to mess around with a wizard based gish for Gale and found that EK had Cha labeled as it's ability. Checked this on AT as well.

thank you so much for this, as someone who came from divinity 2 and is a beginner in the dnd world altogether, i had no clue what all the *terms* meant, like why does me healing my team with shadowheart require me to long rest to use it again, i was just so used to the game world relying on mana alone, this guide is so concise and clear it has made me finally want to play sorc/wizard because i understand the terms now. in the next guide would it be possible to teach us all about combinations? elemental wise, so far i've tried water and ice to freeze the surface, and greese and fire to set the floor ablaze, is there more to it? like casting a holy spell on a water surface to bless it like in DO2?

Multiclass wizard is obscene. I can scribe any spell I have slots for (say from my 5 levels of cleric) from scrolls. My cleric currently has 10 cantrips and can cast fireball and fly as a cleric 5/ wizard 1

I have a very technical question regarding spell save DC and attack modifiers. Lets say that you get the same spell from TWO different classes in a multiclass build. And that those two classes have different spellcasting ability scores. Which ability score bonus gets used? Highest? Lowest? First class? does it matter which spellbook you drag it onto the bar from? example: wizard/sorc with both classes able to cast firebolt (for attack roll), or say tempestcleric/stormsorcerer with call lightning from both (for spell save dc). Just as examples. Basically what I'm asking is how to get the best accuracy out of spells in a multiclass.

certain spells targeting armor class instead of a DC really confused me when i first started playing. spells like these (esp eldritch blast) benefit greatly from bufffs like bless and get doubly buffed by staff of arcane blessings. why exactly certain magic is harder to hit someone with high amor is up to imagination 🤔

since i got max fireball and blackhole and specced into fire i just use the char with blackhole and then fireball on my wizard most fights are over before they start lol, Raphael gave me a few problems but i just swapped fire for lightning and got through it i'm just on the last part of act 3 i will see how it goes wish me luck

I’m trying to build a wizard sorcerer. I want the evasive(tempest flight) and mana manipulation on my wizard. My question is thus, since I have high intelligence and wizard class enabled do I need a high charisma? Will the spells I selected as a sorcerer apply my intelligence bonus, only charisma bonus or both?

You prolly already got an answer to this but your wizard spells will only use INT while your sorcerer spells use CHA. Youd need to select both intelligence and charisma and ignore the rest of your stats except dexterity

Question! If I multiclass, let's say as a Sorcerer/Wizard, then what Ability modifier will my spells use? Intelligence or Charisma? And what is it based on? For example: 1. If I START OFF as lvl 1 Sorc, and THEN get lvl 1 Wizard on Character Level 2, will the modifier for ALL spells be Charisma?; 2. Or is the modifier based on which Class I know the spells with? As in, if I learned the spell as a Sorcerer, that spell uses Charisma, while any spell I learned as a Wizard will use Intelligence? I was planning on doing a Sorc+Wizard, because I thought that Wizard's Arcane Recovery would be very useful to have. But I don't want to have to put points into both Int and Cha, so I'm thinking that, in case it's 2., if I intend to keep leveling as a Wizard, I may as well only put points into Intelligence, and only pick Utility spells that I don't have nail a DC on with, like "Enhanced Leap", or "Sleep". Because, just having 1 point in Wizard allows me to learn spells by paying money, and if I take level 2 of Sorcerer, I can enhance a spell or so with Sorcery Points sometimes, and I can also Fly after casting a lvl 1 or higher spell, if I take Storm Sorcerer, even if the spell isn't a Sorcerer spell, but a Wizard one, and starting off as a Sorcerer will give me a Constitution Proficiency, in case I want to be able to sustain a Concentration spell.

Super noob here… how do I know to cast a spell such as guidance before dialogue if I’ve not done the dialogue yet or if I didn’t even know there would be dialogue/I wanted to engage in dialogue??? I’m prob not asking correctly but i will Say I’m hooked. I took a warlock based on your guide with a few minor tweaks and I’m really enjoying it. But so much to learn!!! I have learned the importance of F5/F8 though. lol Thx for the guides!

Spells that influence dialogue give you the option to cast them during the roll. You don’t have to worry about timing or anything.

Sorceries have sorcery points too. Do you have a video that covers that? I get confused with the options to swap spell slots for sorceries and vice versa.
