To be honest, Starfield didn't really stand much of a chance against BG3.
@nickrubin7312Ай бұрын
To be fair, in recent interview to PC Gamer Swen literally says "The biggest release gets the space, and then the others have to move for it. This has always been a universal truth. So we recognized Starfield as a bigger game than us. So that's why we had to move. Players were not going to be playing multiple RPGs of this size at the same time. That's impossible. So you were going to force players to make a choice, so we said 'OK, we'll take that choice away and move elsewhere" So yeah, they recognized Starfield as a bigger game, because it was supposed to be a bigger game, from a studio with much bigger budget and supposed to a heavy hitter 2023. It so just happened to be... well, what happened to be. I really do think they were trying to get away from Starfield, rather than create a competition or outperform
@kunalsingh4418Ай бұрын
@@nickrubin7312yeah i dont think Larian realized just how popular their game was going to be. Traditionally Crpg no matter how well made are limited by their niche genre, players like me for example simply dont play crpg, since we were not raised on those games. But my god bg3 was a revolution. Probably the best game i have ever played. Its cause of this game that i even started trying other crpg. Just that good, starfield simply got crushed, or to be more fair, wasnt even in competition. To think i bought bg3 just to tide over the month until starfield release feels hilarious now.
@blackshard641Ай бұрын
@@kunalsingh4418 they plainly didn't. IIRC, they thought they'd get around 100,000 concurrent players at launch. They got more than 8x that, and apparently a full year after release they're still hovering around their original estimate. In July of last year, I remember thinking BG3 was mostly exciting for a niche audience. I was still a little sore from how the massive buzz surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 turned into backlash due to some gamers' negative experiences (I had a brand new PC and only ever had very minor bugs), so partly I was just being cautious, but mostly I thought there was absolutely no way that a CRPG could have the same mainstream appeal as a first-person action adventure. Then I figured the big surge of players for BG3 was mostly social media buzz over the bear scene and general curiosity that would quickly fade after Starfield came out, and BG3 would be a flash in the pan. I did not expect so many other people to replay the game endlessly just the same as I did.

To your comments at 12:10 and on, since release I've believed that the thing "holding" BG3 back was the 5e ruleset. after playing DOS2 and seeing what the studio is capable of creating I believe that ultimately being beholdent to WOTC actually limited the potential of BG3. Especially now with the turmoil surrounding the 2024 5e.5 revisions I think WOTC is going to need to spend some time learning from Larian. I'm honestly super excited that we are moving away from the BG series for a time and have REALLY high hopes for DOS3. As you said, with a priority for talent retention and a whole suite of improvements that went into BG3 I cant imagine DOS3 being any less of a success; save for another DOS2 "Pursuing Divinity" arc.

With the recent PCGamer article confirming that Larian WAS, in fact, working on BG4 (and even had "something playable", according to Sven) before things between them and WotC went sour, I remain hopeful that time will heal the rift and the two of them collaborate again on another D&D project. My dream is that Larian, taking all the knowledge and experience they've learned from BG3, goes on to make Neverwinter Nights 3, with a full working DM client and possibly a module creator as well. :) This kind of D&D CRPG project has not been attempted since NWN1 (NWN2 made a half-hearted attempt, but it fell far short in the DM client and module creator side of things), and I think if anybody could pull it off AND do it justice (and without poisoning the well with all kinds of predatory microtransactions and subscription/season pass tomfoolery), it would be Larian.

The leadership of Larian truly seems to go above and beyond for their passion and their customers. They made a gem of a game that isn't driven by the need to make money but simply made to be fun, that's the most important aspect of a game if you find it fun to play. They also went through the trouble of making physical version of the game when they really didn't need to, just to satisfy customers, like myself, who prefer physical version of the game. I got the ps5 japanese version of the game a couple of months ago, had a blast playing it and now I'm trying to get the deluxe version so I can see just what was censored or cut out from the japanese version. And now they are going to give us mod support for the game before they move on to their next projects, so that we the players can enjoy their game however we want.

But then after a while I started to look more into it, heard it was a Game of The Year nominee, so I gave it another shot. And I bought it day one on Xbox release. And I have forever been changed by this masterpiece of a game. And I'm so glad I gave it that second chance. I'd go back in time and slap past me for even having such thoughts 😂.

I had 250hrs in EA before release, and I wish I had given it more time. Still love this game so much. Fun fact: Still haven't finished it. I have so many different runs all concurrently slowly getting closer to the end, but still haven't gotten any of them across the finish line.

For me with these types of games. It's a LOT of reading! I don't play video games to read text off a screen, but BG3 makes me want to, and it's concice and staight forward for the most part. Streamlining the walls of text and allowing for some fluid gameplay outside of turnbased combat is what makes BG3 accesible. This is coming from someone who owns every FIFA game since 2003 and they are my most played games. I'm a sportsball guy who plays sports games but I love this fantasy RPG. They nailed it.

I played this on PS5 and I would like to throw out a thanks to the early access pc players whose feed back helped makes this game awesome.

One year already. I haven’t reached act 3 with any of my characters. Still my favorite RPG of all times though.

They'd make the Iron Throne a 15.99 DLC if it was a normal studio. Wanna save those people? Pay up!

Been a hugs fan of Larian since Beyond Divinity. Bought all their games since then and watched them get better and better. Sven has such drive and passion for their games which seems to rub off on everyone else that i wish he was my boss. Congrats on the 1st year of BG3 and look forward to the next game.

I remember during EA I left a review of the game, saying that it will be a great game on release. Looking back at it, I think I was pretty accurate lol

7:52 I personally think panel from hell was not only nice, but critical for the game, a lot of us would have lost track on BG3 progress I believe and few new EA players / feedback providers would have joined if we didn't have these updates on big patches, amusing to watch, very informative and more importantly, hype asf

I think another reason why this is such a popular game is…. Its official D&D, everyone wants to play D&D, but cant get there heads round the table top rules, this is a epic entry point. Original sin 2 is pretty much exactly the same game just reskinned and updated for the D&D theme. Love the devs for this.

The Panels From Hell were THE BEST. I legit felt like a kid on Christmas morning every time, just so incredibly giddy and excited :') I miss that. Such a wonderful surprise to see they've made a new KZbin channel! I can't wait to see what the Channel From Hell gifts us with 😈 Thanks for the great video, Wolf!

When they said there would be no DLC and no sequel I'm sure we all felt like Obi Wan when Alderaan was destroyed, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
@Ratty524Ай бұрын
A sequel is planned iirc, it’s just that Larian won’t be behind it. Also with upcoming official mod support I can imagine this game will get nearly the same replay value that Skyrim has.
@jacobyrassilonАй бұрын
Pretty sure you can blame WotC and Hasbro for that. They saw how well BG3 sold and probably wanted Larian to implement some live service or MTX nonsense into a DLC or sequel and Larain noped out.

I remember years ago when early access released and how excited I was. I was at work during the day and watched your livestream lol. Love your content bro. You’ve come such a long way since that.

I'm still heartbroken that there is no DLC, expansion, etc. I understand why Larian doesn't want to pursue it but dang what a missed opportunity for easily a few years of expansions. Such a combination of studio Dev talent, storytelling, voice acting, etc is just so rare!

Don't be heartbroken, play the two DOS games if you haven't already.

After a year of playing and well over 1000 hours total, I gotta say Act 1 is still a masterpiece 10/10. Act 2 is an 8/10 and Act 3 is a 9/10. Character creation and fantasy immersion are both 10/10. Music is 11/10. Best game I’ve ever played.
