I really think since this scene is such a big deal they should have put way more into it. Maybe if you had low approval or didn't know he's a vamp he tries to cover up what he did, but if you knew he was a vamp or had high approval he automatically uses a scroll or withers to resurect you and apologizes... would make a lot more sense.

I love that they made him like this. The number of fangirls that are like “My babygirl Astarion can’t be that evil. He approves if you ask the bird in the grove to sing!” He also approves if you kick the bird LOL Anything that gets the treasure from the bird nest. He’s genuinely awful at the beginning of the game and can become genuinely evil by the end of the game.

The fact that he's complicated and capable of incredible character growth depending upon your influence on him makes him one of the most compelling companions in the game. Contrast him with Wyll who has no arc or growth despite being an origin character. He's just semi competent nice guy in unfortunate situation from start to end. Some people like that, but there's not much to make art and fanfics about. Most people who like Astarion aren't pretending he isn't fucked up in act one. Rather, there's compelling reasons why he's so fucked up in act one.

@@ANPC-pi9vu I agree with you and I’m sure the reasonable Astarion enjoyers are probably just quietly playing the game and not thinking thoughts largely unsupported by the text. I have, however, seen whole compilations and some pretty passionate diatribes where girls aggressively misunderstand his character arc in favor of their preferred understanding of what a vampire boyfriend is supposed to be like. I got the “You can tell he’s secretly a softie because he approves of getting the bird to sing” thing from one of those diatribes and the girls in the thread believed it wholeheartedly. For the record, he’s distracted me from romancing anyone else in five play throughs. I love his whole story.

I really busted my ass laughing when he ended up killing me and then acted as if nothing had happened. I didn’t wanna waste a revive on myself so I loaded up a save and then died thanks to a fail. I love this game

Fr, technically he never had a good meal if the standard is thinking creatures. Traveling he's at least had access to better wildlife than vermine, but then he's also probably more exhausted than usual what with traveling and combat, so probably needs more. In Astarion origin, you end up with a 'dream' that triggers the bite scene... he thought he was being called back to Cazador or yhat Cazador was coming for him, so the bite was both for strength but also to prove that Cazador's command doesn't control him anymore. I just wish they had him explain it to us when we aren't playing as him.

In D&D only a true vampire can turn you into a vampire and then you’ll end up like Astarion a vampire slave who has to do the bidding of his master. Astarion even states that he lived off rodents because that’s the only thing his master lowed him to consume. So unless you find a true vampire (Astarion isn’t a true vampire) then you’ll just end up a gaunt weak thrall

I'm a druid and he was leading me out to the middle of nowhere to check on the animals cause something was "wrong" with his mount. I investigate. Nat 20. It's perfectly fine. In fact there's nothing remotely wrong with it. He fails a persuasion roll, which then became a canon gag. "No no. The Axebeak is not okay. It's milk tastes funny." --Axebeak is a bird. Birds don't have milk. Axebeak is also male. What are you drinking?! All improv. None of it scripted. He then tries to aggressively shake my hand repeating "Are you with me brother" after a speech about how we're a party and we're a good team, and gotta watch each others backs blah blah. Sus jpg. Dm goes "What do you do?" "I reach for his hand, then use the other to grab my knife and shank him." Whole table. WAt!? DM Roll for it. I win the roll. Turns out he was trying to initiate me into a secretive theives guild cult thing, so that we could discuss the mission openly. Since he's also cursed with silence about discussing with any non initiates about guild matters. Astarion: You need to trust me, I was totally only going to sneak around and murder you in your sleep. No biggy! Its all good! --Doom music intensifies as I draw my shiv.-

Not quite, if you kill him it is final, you can't rez him because you stake him in the heart.

I don't remember as it's just a one day buff, but I believe it was called "happy" since he was temporarily sated. It's a +1 to attack rolls, might also be to saving throws and something else. It was a decent buff but mechanically speaking not worth dying and going to 1 hp after revival. I also think I lost the benefits of a long rest since well, spent part of it being dead 😅

+1 to rolls until long rest. And no need to feed him in the first place, he gets this buff as long as his bite attack connects.

Same, so far I can stop him and he says he only wants to take as tiny bit as he needs and all my stats take -1 while he gets bonus to his. I do it especially when I need anything I can get that needs sneak or rogue talents for him. He never drained me and has never asked me so far to dine again. I only do it when I let him and get that same debuff. I'm a shape-shifting druid PC so doesn't really matter to me I guess? Narratively kinda ironic. Maybe new or old patch?
