I had the exact same opinion on the Defenders until i tried them on. The X-Panders are one of my absolute favorites though, super uncomfortable but I love the silhouette.

You need to see the Defenders in person and try it on. They are the comfiest shoes for a wide footer and truly unique!

@@carter_is_here they run TTS to me with wide feet. I normally wear 0.5 for most shoes due to wide feet. But for this I can fit EU43 or US10 perfectly. U gotta try them on to really know.

A year and a half past, but the thing that bugs me most about Balenciaga's footwear as someone currently growing their eclectic shoe collection is how they end up being either gimmicky or non-essential and there's no in-between and it comes across as under-studied on their part. The Balenciagas I personally like the most from this list are the ss17 platform boots, the defenders, the sketch variation of the bulldozers, and the older moto boots. I like boots much more than sneakers [I literally own 18 pairs of boots to only 4 pairs of sneakers], and looking at my own collection already I already have more interesting versions of all of Balenciaga's boot offerings. Instead of ss17 platform boots I have the 4-inch shattered-mirror tabis from Margiela. Instead of the bulldozers, I have a pair of Austrian Mountaineering boots from the 80s [iykyk]. Instead of the moto boots, I might end up getting just a normal pair of non-fashion ones since I like the aesthetic but I already have a pair of welding boots from Redback that have a similar vibe. Defenders are the one shoe of theirs I don't find an easy parallel to elsewhere but 1) my partner thinks they look terrible and refuses to be seen in the same room as them and 2) they kinda have a similar thing going on to the Converse Run Star Motions, and I already have a pair of those. Even if I was given like ten grand to just shoot on boots, am I getting Balenciaga or am I getting Guidi/CCP/Pollacki/Ann Demeulemeester/Haider Ackermann/more Margiela/PNW heritage boots? Balenciaga tries to dip its toes into this aesthetic and that and spin it with irreverence and playfulness, but it ends up just being worse that its competitors in a similar price bracket. I think the best distillation of this is to look at their Santiago boots. I like that style of boot aesthetically although I'm still looking for a pair that doesn't murder my feet since my cowboot boots are too narrow. The video already brings up the comparison with YSL, but there's also the Western Tabi boots, the Mcqueen 'Punk' ankle boots, and the R13 Slouch-y cowboy boots, all of which for one reason or another are either competitive at a lower price [Mcqueen], more elegant [YSL], or vastly more interesting [Margiela/R13]. It makes Balenciaga feel like the 'mid' of men's luxury footwear, and that sucks. The situation is less dire if you're a sneaker person, but it's tragic that the brand that has designs like the Defenders and the Destroyed Sneakers has next to no personality or care when it comes to their boots.

The defenders are probably one of the greatest shoes I've ever worn especially since they give you more height and there comfortable. For me above all it's about comfort especially since I'm allot older now comfort is everything to me but i understand if you haven't tried them on.
