Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were arrested for attempting to smuggle heroin out of Bali in 2005, and were sentenced to die. Five years later, those close to them say they've transformed One of the really frustrating things about this case is that they have become valuable assets for the Indonesian community they help Indonesians in prison become better people, their lawyer Julian McMahon tells Dateline. Now, they look to appeal against their death sentences, to continue the work they have started in prison. Chan is a pastor, Sukumaran months from completing his degree. Their lives changed after the realization that one day I won t get up and now they cherish life a lot more than what I did . Sukumaran admits he was stupid but never thought of myself as a bad person .

As sad as it is, these people knew the consequences if caught. People are looking at the very basic situation, but anything dealing with the drug crimes has victims from the manufacturing to dealers to the users. Thousands die every year bc of drugs, I’m talking about the innocent victims. The children, victims of criminals either on drugs or desperate for them. Australia cannot tell another country what to do when it comes to their justice system. To be honest, if they got away with it, they would continue trafficking. I feel they sincerely changed, but they still had to face the punishment by that government.

By the look of it you dont have a heart whatsever!!!!!!!! Surely drug smuggling is a bad thing but it is not that hard a crime!! After all drug abusers choose themselves to use drugs, nobody forces them to do that! And killing those two certainly is not going to resolve the problem!1 In fact I believe exactly drug users should punished heavily for using drugs and generating that demand for drugs! As if there is demand there will be offer, always!

I mean I agree that they shouldn't get away with what they did, but they actually made an effort to change their lives and rehabilitate themselves. Not many convicts can do that and actually produce results On the other hand, it just goes to show that not everyone is that forgiving of crimes like this, whether it's out of spite, a need to carry out justice, or not believing that people can change

As an American, I support the death penalty. But only in cases involving cases such as multiple murders, torture, & the murder of children where guilt is firmly established. But, I also believe in mercy for those who have demonstrated redemption. If there was ever a case of redemption, these 2 certainly did! When the Governor/Warden of the prison comes in & says that they have not only redeemed themselves but are helping others, that says a lot. I would go so far as to say that they made life easier for the guards there also. I don't feel that any other country should demand that another country has to change to accommodate the prisoners home country's laws & beliefs. But Andrew & Myuran weren't asking to be let out. Others asked & demanded that. They said they would gladly accept life sentences. It makes me wonder what else they could've done to increase the quality of life in the prison. They admit they committed a crime. They accepted punishment. But, if countries tell prisoners that they should behave & try to redeem themselves while they're there & they do but it makes no difference, why should any other prisoner even try? Indonesia dug in their heels because they didn't want to look weak or lose face. In carrying out these executions, they did exactly what they feared.

@@paulspydar That's like saying McDonald's is responsible for people with diabetes or who are overweight. One should not bear the blame for other people's choices. For justice the punishment needs to fit the crime and in this case they are having to pay the ultimate price which is completely unjustified. These judges were not looking for justice ,but only looking to make an example out of them and making a name for themselves. That is not Justice. There was this guy who drove around with a sign that said "shoot your local heroin dealer." He thought that was justice ,but he was only motivated through emotion rather than true and fair justification. Once his daughter was a heroin addict so like I said he was only motivated through emotion. I told him well in that case then shoot your local heroin addict. He did not like that ,but I had to explain to him that it is not the heroin dealers fault that there is a demand for heroin. 95% of heroin addicts only get hooked on heroin because of another heroin addict whom is usually the first one to introduce the drug. So now who's fault is it more, the heroin dealer who is only supplying the demand or the heroin addict who is introducing it to someone by influencing them to use heroin in the first place? So it is much more complicated than just to blame the drug dealers who in most cases are only trying to support and provide for their family.

I know these guys did a bad thing but how they changed a prison system is amazing for other inmates. I hoped there would get life just for the simple fact how they could have changed the whole prison.I watched the movie guilty and its was heartbreaking. The Co would be practicing shoting while they were in there cells I mean it's bad enough to have the co tell them how they were going to die.

Had they may have shown a little less attitude and cockyness in court , and been more honest and shown remorse, maybe these two would still be alive. Still in jail but alive. Judge even said as much before sentencing them to death.

Christine Chen why does it make a difference where I am from. Yes I do live in the USA. But here in the USA we do have the death penalty but we do not have the firing squad like Bail does. I am a law college student and I don't believe in the death penalty at all.I mean tying someone to a pole and shooting at someone is disgusting on so many levels. I do blame the president for this .I mean myu and Andrew worked to make their prison system better and what thanks did they received? And it pisses me off because the president showed so much force for them for no reason
