While visiting the Goa Gajah temple outside of Ubud, Bali I paid for a guided tour with a local woman. In the process I learned a lot about the history, religion and culture of this unique Hindu island in Indonesia.

Interesting memory of Rishi Agastya from India 5.11 - 5.14. I understand his statue is in Yogyakarta. Also story of Ganesha's head from Indra's elephant Airavata's baby (ugh!) 11:55... Interesting of course that the Buddhist master Atisha came to Indonesia to get bodhicitta teachings from his Indonesian guru... Thanks Gabe for a lovely video!

Definitely love Bali with it's colorful culture and amazing, friendly people. Your tour guide mentioned Prambanan, which is truly an interesting place to visit. This is within the Yogyakarta region. Also close to Yogyakarta is Borobudur which is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. If you're in that area don't miss Solo (Surakarta), which is the hometown of the current president of Indonesia. Lots of interesting things to see and experience in Central Java.

Hi Gabriel, this history is fascinating, you get a better understanding of what the culture is and the significance of all this. I'm sure many people view this as hokey nonsense but if you have any understanding of the spirit world and religion and why people act and behave in certain ways. In many ways no difference in other religions of evil and good devils and gods which permeate the entire world.

I think it's just aesthetics. We love aesthetics :) I'm a balinese. Probably some other balinese will refute me and call me ignorant (which probably true), and come up with some religious explanation. But I think it's aesthetics, and nothing wrong with that.

@mozo - some of the Indian men wear sarongs (or a tubular cloth that they fold/ tie at the waist) during religious or special occasions. I once saw a procession of Indian men wearing that white tubular cloth - they were on their way to a temple and all wore flower garlands on their necks. This was in Myanmar/ Burma, where there's a large Indian presence. An Indian guy friend wore that tubular cloth to his wedding. In his region (the south), he said it's common to wear white. In other regions, they wear red (or so he said). I forgot what that tubular cloth is called. Edit: upon googling, it's called "longyi" in Myanmar. In India, my friend called it "lungi" (or similar).
