When up on top forking the silage it looked super moldy. If it was instead dusty the cows might not stick up their noses at it. If just dusty instead it would mean very dry making silage not be silage. But you said the silage was steaming. You have to be careful if it is making gas because methane does not support breathing.

When I was in my twenties ( late ‘60s early 70’s) we had great weather in the northeast during October and we cut several fields of hay.
