It is sad that some comments are so abusive but people use bad language when their arguments are weak or if they feel they can't win an argument by reasoning. I'm sorry to see you personally being attacked but unfortunately you touched a very sensitive matter with multinational interests and as you can see we all went to school and studied our history books but the facts are either contradicting or missing in some books :-) I'm sure the historical sources you used told you exactly what you narrated in the video and it is not your fault if some facts are incorrect or totally missing. I'm Bulgarian and I love my country and I loved reading history and I still do but the problem is that we all see the history via our own prism of national pride and emotions. However, I deeply believe that my country's history is seriously over sighted and neglected and there have been lots of misconceptions around us, our lands and history, including the very ancient times (when we were in Asia) I wish the countries' historians sit around one table and agree on the facts based on facts and not emotions! And I wish that our neighbouring countries stop hating us and ridiculing us so much! This doesn't do them any justice.
@JabzyJoe8 жыл бұрын
Ha, don't worry, my feeling are not hurt by them. Personally, I don't mind people being patriotic, but I can't stand nationalism. I'm sure there's a difference between the 2, but I find it hard to explain. Nationalists are usually pretty easy to spot in the comments section and I'll often argue back if I feel like it. From what I can tell historians have been some of the most dangerous people. They've created nationalities out of nothing and justified any deed committed. Marxist, Nationalist, Whig etc. It's not the job of a historian to tell you the facts but give an argument. And they are instrumental in putting every event into a grand narrative.

There is still bitterness from those events here in Bulgaria. Now we get along with most of our neighbors, but that salty taste you get after everyone turning from your ally to an enemy is still not gone. I know I’m late on this video because I’m commenting in 2018 and this came out in 2015 but still need to express myself. As a Macedonian i feel really...really sad when looking into this. Im not one of those idiots that believe we are ancient Macedonians and that Alexander is ours.I’ve been studying this for almost a year and now i know everything.If i have to talk honestly this is what i think.Historically we were Bulgarians because there is a lot of evidence to prove that,but after WW2 we officially became part of Yugoslavia and Yugoslavians, but of course that doesn’t change who we are, but its been 73 years since being with Bulgaria.Today its safe to say that Bulgarians are the closest relatives according to our language and ethnicity.If you ask me on my opinion about Macedonia joining Bulgaria it depends, in the moment no i think we cant really do that since both of the country’s been apart from each other for at least 73 years and both of the country’s have there own government’s and problem’s but i really hope we become really good friends even tho we are by now i can tell that there is A LOT of improvement in the relationship,but its not enough i really want my country and Bulgaria to be even better friends than now and move on from the past and hope that my country learns to except the real history.

diamantidis 13 well same for me i dont really care about if we are going to unite or not,but we have to think for the others because not all will agree and it can cause MASIVE protests in our country and i dont believe that Albanians will be also happy with this decision too.These two country’s have been apart for about 73 years and thats not a little number so in some way we have differences and not to mention almost all of the adults of macedonia are blinded with Yugoslavian and Serbian propaganda and i know this because of my mom and my grandfather who are huge nationalist and also because of gruevski.believe it or not during yugoslavia they NEVER learned about how alexander was theirs and the rest of that bullshit ofa history,the only thing the had during Yugoslavia was only the name and i know this because my grandmother told me and somehow got that out of my mum to tell me that.Nonetheless the idea for uniting is a tricky idea that can cause a lot of drama

As a Bulgarian, I would just like to add something that I believe is important. The Ottoman empire has all Balkan nations subdues for centuries, so it was natural to consider it the natural enemy. During the First Balkan War Bulgaria had 450 000 men fighting - more than all the other allies combined. This is why they fight more battles, and got disproportionally more casualties, feeling they deserve the lion's share of the spoils as well. During the Second Balkan War the now former allies wielded much larger armies - they fought Bulgaria with much greater effort than they were fighting The Ottomans. This, understandably, led to some very hard feelings. In all, the Second Balkan War is now in our history as the First National Catastrophe, preceding the disastrous results of WW1.
@strahinjatopalovic25403 жыл бұрын
By my serbian history book you Bulgarians didnt send enough troops to Macedonia, and didnt even take the land you wanted like Trnovo (Im not sure if its called like that), and we had to help you. Austro-Hungary fucked everything by making Albania.
@nikolatasev49483 жыл бұрын
@@strahinjatopalovic2540 We learn that Bulgarians did not send enough troops to take Macedonia because we sent troops to fight the main Ottoman armies. We were closest to their capital and reinforcements. The nations were in a war together, helping each other was the main idea - not an excuse to break the pre-war treaties. Who took what first should not be as important as what was agreed upon. Things like these led to Bulgaria attacking Serbia in WW1, with tragic consequences for both sides. I'm not saying this as an accusation, or out of spite. More than 100 years have passed, and these old grievances will not cause any new wars. Who was right and who was wrong matters little, when both the wrong and the right are long gone, and history is not likely to repeat itself. I much prefer the modern Balkans without wars. But it is interesting to learn what other's history books view the same event. Thank you for sharing.

@borilboyanov55449 жыл бұрын
infested9846 Yes, it is said that traditionally we hate each-other. A lot of things are "being said" and written. But It wouldn't be a stretch to say that also we've been pawns in the hands of _bigger powers_ for a lo-o-o-ng time. It's normal to be territorial if your territory is constantly being questioned by bigger powers using your neighbors. Hence the factual _history_ of the 20th century. As for the actual hate, here's what a revolutionary of ours said about what Bulgaria should be: "All nations (ethnicities) in it (Bulgaria) will live under pure and sacred laws, the way that it is given by God for man to live by. And for the Turk and for the Jew and for whomever they be, it will be the same and it will only be, if they recognize the laws side-by-side with Bulgarians." And think for yourself for a second: why do you think that the western nations got so big after the Renaissance? (Why did the Roman Empire got so big? The Turk/Osman empire?). I will tell you why: It's simple: Money/Wealth and Willpower for organisation. It is money that allows you to have the armies in order to oppress population into submission (and don't have "hate" on yourself, at least in public ;)). And it is the Will of thousands of little knights, barons, kings and emperors to utilize that wealth in conquering "fashion". So, you "bigger" nations have "a finger" in that "traditional Balkan hate" to begin with. Just because you were so lucky to find out that suddenly "hey there's gold/money in that"

The Balkans in the late 1800's and early 1900's was a powder keg; even Otto von Bismarck said on his death bed "I see a Great War, and it will come from the East". It was the nationalism of the Balkans that triggered the Great War, Otto von Bismarck knew the war was coming form the East since conflicts were constantly going on, whether it would be nations proclaiming autonomy or desiring to expand, this created a fire fueled by nationalism. Coupled with how some leaders in the Balkans, like the Carol I of were Romania who was the cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm II, had ties to the Great Powers, this would inevitably lead to the first World War.
@TheKriviful8 жыл бұрын
+Sherif El Sharkawy The nationalism of the Balkans triggeered the war but it wasn't the cause of war. The main cause of war were the desires of the superpowers in Europe. Unified Germany and Unified Italy were formed quite late compared to the other nation - countries. Because they formed late, they didn't get as much territory as they wanted to. They wanted to expand. Austria - Hungary was starting to fall, because of nationalist movementes inside itself. Slavic peoples from there wanted independence, or at least a great degree of autonomy, Hungarians wanted their own state, and the Emperor of Austria and Hungary wanted to persevere the Empire. Also there wasn't a single Empire that controlled all of the Balkans. A-H, and the Ottoman Empire both wanted full control over the Balkans throught history. Also Russia wanted a foothold in Balkans, to get access to Adriatic, and over it to Mediterranean. And by the end of 19th and start of 20th century, the Balkan states finally succeded in getting their independence from the Ottomans who have ruled there for about 400 years. South Slavs felt that they needed their own state, and since Serbia and Montenegro were the first South Slavic states to gain independence, they could work more freely towards making a unified South Slavic state. The movement for a unified South Slavic state was quite strong in Croatia and Slovenia, and when A-H saw that Serbia and Montenegro gained independence the Empire felt threatened because a unified South Slavic state was closer to realization, and that would make A-H lose a big amount of their lands. As you can see Europe was in a bad situation, where everyone wanted something from someone else. Everyone was waiting for a trigger. A-H needed wanted to go to war against Serbia ever since Serbia got its independence, but it didn't have a justified reason or excuse to attack it just yet. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was that reason A-H needed to start a war. And after that when war broke out between A-H and Serbia it triggered a chain of declarations of war by the allies of the 2 countries which started the fight.

gooka boo There are no limits to the expansion of the Great Powers of Europe. Simply put, the Hapsburg and Ottoman Empire were always hungry for land; they were the sick men of Europe losing their prestige, power and influence in Europe and declining as the Powers of Europe. On your question of what Greece and Serbia brought to the world, the former had the 2nd best economy on Earth after Japan between the Civil War in the 50's up to 1973 and Serbia created Yugoslavia under Tito, which eventually went down only because Tito brought the Balkans together very well until he passed. I do somewhat concur, the Serbs were savages in the 1990's with their ethnic cleansing of my fellow Muslim brethren in Bosnia, but the Balkans aren't all useless. Under the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire, they faced deep oppression and indifference due to separate cultures and religions(Greeks are Orthodox, Ottomans are Muslim, Hapsburg are Catholic). I personally think that Bosnia and Albania should've stayed Ottoman or at least as client states due to their cultural and religious ties, but the Balkans were meant to be free since they can't let Empires with a completely different culture and religion decide on their fate without them having say.
@sherifelsharkawyful8 жыл бұрын
Zmajeviti Respect to you as well friend, an objective prodigy of history and politics. The issue of the Balkans is a controversial one, and we can all agree that the intervention of the Great Powers into Balkan affairs stirred nationalism along with the seeds of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Locke, the philosophers of the social contract and constitution; however, the people of the Balkans did at times escalate it to radical levels. Groups like the Black Hand that assassinated the Archduke of Austria-Hungary and the desire for vindication against the repressive Empires of Europe led them to annex lands belonging to the Sick Man of Europe, the Ottoman Empire, and entice radical political separatism in places like Bosnia in Austria-Hungary. The Great Powers did their part to escalate the level of nationalism and inevitably foster the seeds of the Great War, but the Balkan peoples with a desire for regional prestige and Independence also contributed to the start of the World War. Though, I don't blame the people of the Balkans for starting the war, their monarchs were almost always non-Balkan(Carol of Romania a Prussian and Otto of Greece a Bavarian) and installed by the Western power and they were stuck in between the haggles of the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires who greedily eyed the Balkans with a lust for prestige and an opportunity to regain lost honor and glory when their territories seceded, industrialization failed and reactionary monarchs preserved the status quo ante bellum. They were mere victims of the imperialists of Europe and I sympathize with their struggle, even though my background is Ottoman-Egyptian!

Johnny Blaze Sounds familiar, doesn't it when a country uses others for their own personal gain? Much like the US with every autocratic regime opposed to communism such as Duvalier, Trujillo, Mobutu Seso Seko, and Suharto. The struggle of countries like Serbia and Greece towards the end was filled with greed and a desire for tyrannical rule and revenge, but their struggle in the early 19th century was a noble one, they were unrepresented people whose fate was often decided by the reactionary rulers of European powers who desired nothing but their own foothold in the Balkans to simply have more land to brag about it and actually have a chance to compete with other powers. I still loath the Serbian wet dream of a greater Slav nation and their atrocities and I see the Greek military Junta as a savage regime that brought stagnation to the entire country and crushed their economic boom; however, I think these people should at least deserve their autonomy and self-governance.

+Jabzy When they were saying "Macedonians" they meant all people who live in Macedonia. It was not an Ethnic group (Ethnicity). Its like today we say Balkans, we mean all Ethnicities that leave in the Balkan Peninsula. There is no "Balkan" Ethnic group. People who leaved at FYRO"M" had Bulgarian surnames, Titos political party changed them so he could create an Ethnogenesis... the birth of a new Ethnos (Etnic group). Today people who leave there are saying fanatically that they are "Macedonians", but their great-grantparents were calling themselves "Bulgarians" just 70 years ago. People who leave in Thessalonika are calling themselves -Greeks- for the last 3000 years.

Actually the historical factual truth is Bulgaria began picking up momentum and started repulsing and defeating the Greeks and Serbs, the two were afraid of a Bulgarian invasion upon there lands and quickly sued for a ceasefire, the Romanians and Ottomans received absolutely no fight or resistance due to the concentration to the south and west, the war was an overall draw for Bulgaria, the great powers simply took advantage of it and took away important land along with granting partial land to Bulgaria, a pointless war for all the nations, could have easily been prevented

a thing you missed to describe: 1) alliance agreement divided currect day FYRM by Serbia and Bulgraria in half, and by the same agreement Serbia and Montenegro were to get Albania and all the sides were to help eachother if Austro-Hungary/Romania was to intervene 2) Austo-Hungary did intervene, demand independance for Albania and threaten a war because of it. Bulgaria didn't send troops to prepare defense against Austro-Hungary and demands were accepted, with Serbia and Montenegro losing territories that were theirs as part of agreement. Serbia, though maybe the strongest one of the allies, was in specifically bad position since it didn't have access to the sea. 3) Serbia helped ally operations to the end, for example by sending army to siege of Edirne, which had nothing to do with Serbia 4) Bulgaria didn't recognize any of these to Serbia. Serbia asked Russian tsar to mediate between Serbia and Bulgaria, Bulgaria didn't wait for it, but attacked instead With all being said, I think that Bulgaria was not constructive side in this conflict. Before that, Serbia randomly and without any good reason attacked Bulgaria in 1885, and suffered humiliating defeat. These two came from bad leadership, created a gap between Serbs and Bulgars, that later left them on different sides on both world wars. That's really really sad, Serbs and Bulgards are close in many ways, but formed as totally different and conflicted nations by these events.

The actual battles actually seems less interesting to me then all of that background...

Only 24 hours after the start of the Greek-Bulgarian clashes, Thessaloniki was disturbed again by gunfire. On 17 June 1913, the refusal to surrender of the formerly allied Bulgarian detachments who were billeted in various parts of the town, led to heavy night-long street fighting with the Cretan gendarmes and units of the 2nd Division. By 7 a.m. the following morning, the whole Bulgarian force had been captured. Although the city was to have much experience of war up until the mid-20th century, the Greeks were now indisputably in possession of it.

The Bulgarians proposed to Greek and Serbs that "each country should take every city that her army will liberate from Ottoman guards" since borders didn't exist for 400 years. This proposal made because Bulgaria thought that Greek and Serb armies couldn't defeat the Ottomans and they will stuck, so the Bulgarian army who was trained by German officers will have enough time to take the most cities in Macedonia and Thrace. But Bulgarian dreams failed because both armies defeated the Ottomans and marched fast. Especially when the Greek army arrived first at city - port of Thessaloniki something that made Bulgarians furius. This is the reason that Bulgarians started Balkan war 2 and attacked both Greece and Serbia. The reason that you described is only for you to saw your anti-Greek and anti-Serb feelings as a pure Albanian.

Disinformation due to ongoing anti-Russian propaganda being built for so many years now. Some facts show different geo-political interests yes, and with due respect why should we expect from the Russian Empire to be the perfect Saint country?!! But the fact is that if it was not to the Russo-Turkish war Bulgaria would have been dreaming for its liberation for longer (all our attempts to rise against the Ottomans had ended in massive massacres and were stopped; without the help of another country with strong army it would have been extremely difficult task for the ordinary Bulgarian citizens to withstand the regular Turkish army even in its weakest times) The matter of fact is that even if some Bulgarian interests were not supported by Russia back then, majority of them were in line, whereas Great Brittain and France played very bad role in our post-liberation years (they were the reason for half of the liberated lands to be given back to Turkey so we had to try and reunite in 1906.)
@imme128 жыл бұрын
After the reunion Turkey claimed that Bulgaria has to pay them compensation for losing these lands again. It was Russia who told Turkey off for this claim and said that instead of asking Bulgaria to pay, Russia offered to Turkey to reduce some of the Turkish debts towards Russia after the Russo-Turkish war. If Russia was to ask from Bulgaria later on to pay some of this lost money back to them - it would have been kind of fair but at least not in the scale in which the Turkish were initially claiming it should be! Anyway, people read the history the way they want - they want to see Russia the never ending evil, they see it like this (by ignoring the whole picture and emphasising on particular elements and fragments, or half-facts)...

3:25 wait,greeks never did enter bulgarian territory in second balkan war until SOfia was under threat,neither did the serbians manage to hold us off,infact in the 14 day 2nd balkan war not a single bulgarian army was defeated,infact they were slowly pushing back the serbians and greeks since the bulgarian army outnumbered both the serbian and greek armies taken together,but then the bulgarian armies rebelled against the politicians and voluntarily went back and besieged the capital in a protest,lol (or something among those lines,but historically the only reason Bulgaria was defeated in 2nd Balkan war was the backstab from Romania(yeap our dumb politicans(as always) actually turned them down and neglected them when the romainians had their demands) and the aggression from Turkey/Ottoman empire

Battle of Kilkis Lahanas? Battle of Doiran? Battle of Demir Hasar? The Greeks defeated the Bulgarians in 3 battles and you say Bulgaria has never once been defeated? The Greeks pushed back the Bulgarians and they almost completely destroyed the Bulgarians in the Macedonian front if not for the stalemate at Kresna Gorge, which allowed Bulgarian troops to escape. The Greeks completely owned the Bulgars. As for Serbia? They did beat the Bulgars in the battle of Bregalnica. So? Were the Bulgars never defeated?

"Vardar-Macedonia"? Macedonia as a name was not used to describe Vardar or its Slav, Albanian and Bulgarian population before Tito. If you're going to upload a history video, try to be informed or don't do it at all.

YES..IT NAME WAS VARDARSKA BANOVINA FOR 37 YEARS..FROM 1912 WHEN SERBS TOOK SKOPIAN PLAINS, TILL 1949 YEAR, WHEN TITO CHANGED THE NAME VARDARSKA BANOVINA--TO **HELLADIC NAME MAKEDONIA** AND GAVE REPUBLICAN STATUS IN INNER NEW SOCIALISTIC YUGOSLAVIA , TO THIS SMALL TERRITORY. !!

With all my due respect the information to this video is poorly combined with sagnificant gaps and data skipped and leading ultimately to some disinformation (example is mentioning the first regaining of territories by the Bulgarians - that was not an act of self-liberation by the Bulgarians as all Bulgarian attempts to rise and fight for freedom were brutally stopped by the Ottomans. It was the ongoing Russo-Turk war that led to the Russians liberating the north part of Bulgaria while the French and British military professionals were fighting on the side of the Turks)...I know that the Balkan countries might see the conflicts from their own prism of national interests, that includes my own home country Bulgaria, but it is quite sad to see the way foreigners read into these conflicts without going to the focal point: these lands were occupied by the Ottomans for over 500 years, during which consistent and horrific killings of the local Christian population was the daily reality: the Christians were forced to converting to Islam by unseen means of cruelty and any attempt to regain their freedom was followed by massacres, rapes, distinction of whole villiages and cities. For us Bulgarians the Ottoman rule was centuries of yoke - the darkest times of our history, and we know that foreign researchers wouldn't go into so much deapth and usually will read the facts like a mainstream media review. This approach to the history of the Balkans is extremely wrong and will always result to misinformation. Little example, The Balkan War started due to the increasing need to regain back the occupied territories and stop the massacres which the occupiers (the Ottomans, than Turks) were performing continuously... The secret agreement between Serbia, Greece and Romania happened while the Balkan War was still ongoing. The end result was that the alliances of Bulgaria breached the trust and betrayed us, leaving the Bulgarian army to fight on the south east front with the Turks while the Serbian, Greek and Romanian armies entered the Bulgarian territories and start claiming lands. The Bulgarians ended up fighting on all four boarders, loosing lands and being cornered. The so called Bulgarian threat is quite of a big statement as Bulgaria had never regained back its territories the way they were before the Ottomans occupation. We know that Serbians, Romanians and Greek have their own statements in relation to territories and we all have our role in killing each other but Bulgaria was the only country that was the one most betrayed by all parties (alliances, Great Powers etc). That is one of the main reasons why Bulgaria chose to join Germany side during the World War I and ended up fighting along side the Turks against the rest on the Balkan Peninsula countries which was quite controversial thing for us after the 500 years of Ottoman yoke! but we were surrounded by countries that couldn't be our alliances as they betrayed us and used any opportunity to gain as much as possible more territories...using the so called "Bulgarian threat" argument! Well, history is there to teach us something but people don't learn from history unfortunately...and the popular history books are written by the winners often missing some facts or changing others!...However, thank you for trying to educate with these short videos and I respect the work and thought behind that.

+I'm Me You do realise that this video is 4 minutes long? I think most people grasp that these videos are only supposed to serve as an introduction to the topic. If you know a great deal about the wars then these really serve very little purpose. Think of it like a Doctor sitting in a primary school biology class. I doubt he would say 'I think it's sad how teachers who aren't doctors aren't telling them about Ossification.' If I was to talk about the Turks ruling for 500 years in Bulgaria, would I not have to do the same for Serbia, Greece, Romania and discuss the independent status of Montenegro. Then of course, if you want to discuss the focal point, why not begin with where the ethnic groups came from, the medieval Bulgarian-Serbian rivalry, the Turkish invasion, rise of nationalism etc. etc. etc. But I suppose that would probably be better in a book or full length documentary than a '3 minute history' video.

+Jabzy Dear Jabzy, I do realise that and I'm not expecting the full details, but thought that the narrative could have been slightly different, as in its shortness brings a bit different message. However, as I mentioned also I do respect the intend and effort in putting these educational videos :-)
@JabzyJoe8 жыл бұрын
I try my best to avoid putting any sort of narrative in. There's far too many book and documentaries detailing events to give a perspective. Whether that be Marxist, Nationalistic, Revisionist or Whig. Similar to what you said in your other comment, it's best avoided.

yes poor Bulgaria was betrayed when they join to the Austrian Hungarian army then later was again betrayed when they join to the Hitlers army ( first time it can be called mistake but second time i can call you stupid and third time when you offer airports for NATO airplanes to bomb Serbia i can name you idiot but hey in all those deals you had secret agreement thing ) ..lol and bullshit stories about some secret agreements always comes up when you cant show us " paper document " so lets call it secret lol ohhh poor Bulgarians
@imme128 жыл бұрын
+Petar Popara We are commenting about a particular moment in the history. What happens after is a subject to another discussion, especially US (not NATO) bombing Serbia - all Bulgarians were against it but the politics are a dirty thing - many decisions were taken without asking the people of Bulgaria. Secret agreements existed and proofs are available - you need to research a bit more (in different sources, not only Serbian) Note: this video mentions the secret agreement between Serbia and Greece (and this is not a Bulgarian source). The truth for us on the Balkans is that Bulgaria was backstabbed many times by its so called alliances and had to find ways to recover her territories through new alliances: that was the case for the WWI. As far as WWII the story is quite different: Bulgaria wanted to stay neutral, instead received an ultimatum from Hitler Germany stating that the German army can either march through Bulgaria as alliance or as occupant! So very different circumstances!.
If u were fighting one by one Bulgaria , u do understand that all of the Balkans today would be called Bulgaria ? Including Constantinople...

Look you can go and talk that nonesense to some Bulgarians over there but not to a actual historian like my self and while it is true that you ruled most of Kosovo for a time that does not mean Bulgarians lived there emperor Dušan owned basicly all of the balkans and that does not mean that whole of the balkans is Serbian,and how is it that you made Belgrade when it was already made by the Celts before Christ?But I will not tell that history of Bulgarians is full of lies and hipocrisy because you are just like us strong,brave,vigilant people and I think our two nations should stop fighting one another we are orthodox brothers after all

Skader? You mean shkoder? That city is over 2000 years old and was the capital of the Illyrian kingdom meanwhile you Serbs only set foot in the Balkans in the 7th century as migrants Additionally The Siege of Shkodra of 1478-79 was a confrontation between the Ottoman Empire and the Albanians, Franz Babinger called the siege “one of the most remarkable episodes in the struggle between the West and the Crescent. 1600 Albanians fought 150,000-350,000 Turks. Resulting in the death of over 12,000 Turks and 1000 Albanian.

+Jabzy Macedonia is one and ancient.My country official name is Republic of Macedonia.Macedonian ethnicity lived on Balkan before Slavs came then they amalgamated in our culture reciving Christianity. To describe our common language term south-Slavic is used.As Slavs not determinate a nation and ancient Hellenic religion and language is not practiced in kingdom of Greece 1830 , Turks are generalized as muslims, Christian Turks become Modern Greeks educated in variant of Hellenic alphabet. Greek region Macedonia is taken by act of war 1913 treaty by Empire states in Berlin and Bucurest congress .
