Personally, in one 24hr period, I worked at a government level with Israeli's, then Palestinians, then Arabs after that. Every ethnic group, individually, were superb people to deal with. Collectively, the chap I worked for at the time could get nowhere on behalf of the world community. It's an experience I have always appreciated.

One thing to note is that middle east has lived under islamic caliphates based on sharia for 1300 years, of course when you introduce nationalism to them they adopt it in the worst ways possible because islam is entrenched heavily in the culture. Just look at Arab socialists and the turkish CHP and their atrocities immediately after they got power. It pains me to say this but an islamic rule would be better for the middle east, at least they will have a unifying identity until they mellow out with time like all other stable societies.
