The day before the match on pitch inspection Azhar inserted a key on the side of the pitch and it went it indicating the pitch soil was loose and it would tear down in the second innings. The next day in team meeting only Sidhu said we should bat first and not worry abt Jayasuriya & Kalu explosive batting. But the whole team was scared of Sri Lanka openers and Jayasuriya innings against England in quarter finals gave them nightmares. Sachin said we should chase as we are good players of spin. India was concerned abt Sri Lanka strength and forget their own strength. It was Azhar & Sachin decision to bat second. Sanjay Manjrekar openly said this and till date Azhar & Sachin kept quite fearing backlash from fans.

There are certain assumptions. India is a world beater at home. Not in One dayers. Not in T20 s. The nature of the contest is such that team that played better on that particular day wins. Indian think tank read the pitch wrong, and did not select the spinners. And then after having won the toss, they decided to bowl first as if chasing in a World cup Semi-final is a piece of cake, that too against Sri Lanka who has two batting all rounders who bowl spin, and two main spinners, which means 40 over of the game. They made a mistake and paid the price.
