A ball python kept between 40%-60% humidity WILL be dehydrated! They thrive at 70%-90% on the cool side and 50%-60% on the warm side. Interestingly enough, some ball pythons will shed fine at 60% humidity, but many others will not. I initially followed the 50%-60% recommendation and increased it to 70%-80% when my bp was shedding. She had three patchy sheds until I finally permanently increased the humidity to 70%+. She had her first perfect shed with me a few weeks ago and is now a lot shinier and overall healthier. (Yes, I have tested my hygrometers, they're correct) Low humidity can quickly cause respiratory infections as it dries out the mucus membranes and makes them vulnerable to bacteria. High humidity does not cause RIs in this species (though the stagnant air created when people try to achieve high humidity by almost completely cutting off ventilation can; use deep substrate instead!).

I think they can form a bond of sorts with their owners. Recognise them kind of. My boy Gizmo is more comfortable with me compared to others, and slithers into my hands when I open his tank. He even lets me kiss his head. Thankfully he’s not fussy with food either. Best snakes ever.

This was amazing, thank you!! I’m a 60 year old female and I just got my first reptile. A gorgeous, male Ball Python. He just ate for me last night and I was thrilled. He is eating live but in another feeding or two, I’ll start making the switch to f/t. I got a thermostat for the heat pad and he has a warm hide and cool hide. I was told that PVC enclosures are what I should get but the one you recommend looks really nice so I’ll probably get one of those. Great video, thank you! 🐍❤️🐍
@moonlark50393 жыл бұрын
Just some advice: heat mats aren’t a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
@mando_v3 жыл бұрын
@@moonlark5039 I personally use both a heat mad and heat bulb because I find it best to have both heat sources.

If taking care of the ball python properly and giving it what it needs and researching it’s going to be happy and no problems, but if for example someone gives the ball python a heat mat without a temperature regulator, it’s not going to thrive and move away from the spot.too much humidity is also not good, I am getting a ball python in March and I researched lots of videos,I have a passion for them so I know what to do in case of a problem,and I know I will take care of it with no problems cause I’m prepared for one

The minimum tank size is 120gallons or 4x2x2. Ball pythons are semi arboreal and bask in trees in the wild so a heat lamp is needed. Heat mats also do not produce all needed rays. Uvb is not an option. Snakes with uvb are healthier and better eaters. In the wild ball pythons diet consists of mainly birds so adding birds to their diet and feeding them from below will improve their feeding response and health. Since they are semi arboreal high sturdy branches are needed. For all the people who say they never leave their hides give them proper lighting, enrichment and diet and I guarantee that will change.
@marks_reptiles_and_inverts3 жыл бұрын
Edit: for all the people who swear by racks be honest with yourself. Racks are a fours of commercial housing to cram as many animals in a small area as possible. They are not ideal welfare wise for the animals. Until people can separate welfare care and commercial care neither part of the hobby will improve

Going to a reptile expo to meet some breeders in August and I will be purchasing from there instead of the pet store. Not everything marketed as animal safe is true. Take lavender scented hamster bedding for example. It's sold around tons of pet stores yet it's extremely bad for rodents because of their sensitive noses. I'm not an expert on snakes but I do hear there are a few different wood beddings that are bad for animals, so I would do a few google searches just to make sure

i never understand the whole uvb for ball python movement. in the wild they are nocturnal and receive close to zero uvb.
@tylerrugge3 жыл бұрын
They’re crepuscular and are exposed to UVB in the wild in small amounts. I also saw a study that showed pythons given UVB had better levels of vitamin D. Although it doesn’t HAVE to be done, there are definitely benefits
@nataliel92933 жыл бұрын
They will actually bask in the wild. I know people who were doing research in the regions that royal/ball pythons inhabit and would see them basking just outside of the burrows that they could easily dart back into if they feel threatened. A study brought out last year also stated that they saw royals basking at the entrance of its burrow and that the trackers who collect them for the pet trade actively look out for signs of basking near burrow opening in order to know that there is very likely a royal in there. Nocturnal just means mostly Active during the night, but doesn't mean that they don't spend some time awake during the day/dawn/dusk.

Nocturnal means MOSTLY active at night, not ONLY active at night.
