Ballad of a Modern Gunfight: Rafael Fiziev vs Bobby Green

Rafael "Ataman" Fiziev vs. Bobby "King" Green at UFC 265 is one of my favorite fights of all time. This bout had everything: the storyline (the seasoned vet taking on the young up-and-comer), the action, the technical skills on display, unorthodox styles, trash talk, a near-comeback, and the respect between two warriors at the end of it all.

Fiziev's primary style is Muay Thai and his favorite weapons are:
Lightning fast switch kick.
Strong combos with all 8 limbs.
KO Power in his hands and feet.
Defensively, Fiziev has insane head movement and core dexterity.
Green is primarily a boxer and his favorite weapons are:
Long, fast straight punches (especially his jab).
The ability to fight from both stances.
An underrated clinch game.
Defensively, Green uses an unorthodox but effective Philly Shell / shoulder roll, combined with nice footwork.
There are many lessons we can take from this fight but two standouts are:
1) If you can't hit the head, target the body.
2) If you can't match the skill, fight the ego.

yeah i think it could have gone either way. some of those head shots from Fiziev that looked like they landed in real time you can see Green made him just barely miss but can only see that depending on camera angle and sometimes only in slo mo. In a game of inches, this fight could have gone either way but i remember thinking in real time that Fiziev won a close fight and that his body shots and leg kicks were a big part of why. Both guys have great head movement

bobby's defense was so on point that fight. he's always popping in and out of the pocket, sometimes sitting in it, but he's so damn slick and slippery. almost always rolling with the shots i bet like 5 head strikes landed clean that fight, so fiziev adjusted to the body/legs.

Fiziev landed enough Greens chin was just very impressive bc the power difference was noticeable. Honestly though I feel like Fiziev needs to utilize the teep and his jab more especially in that fight those 2 things I think would’ve made a difference against the way Bobby fights. Bobby’s good at slipping guys who wanna throw power at him and Fiziev is kinda the best at that he’s always throwing big left hooks elbows and round kicks. Usually he only has to land a couple times to end it but fucking Bobby was able to eat the clean shots and make everything else not clean.

He is one of the few guys in MMA that is dangerous in southpaw and orthodox. He has also mastered the shoulder roll and hands down style. Fiziev is also dope too and probably a future champ. God i loved this fight! I heard someone say something about the appreciation of fighters is different in the east. The way Japan will hold up fighters as their own pride, win or lose, endlessly respectful, and greatfull, for a good fight! I prefer that, but with greater understanding, and i truly have thought for a while, America is moving towards this. Soo many of my favorite fights left me unsure who won, as i don't often care for what decision is adjudicated, or ended definitively, but i left thinking it could've gone for either, excepting one moment. Jiri vs Glover would be a recency bias favored example. Fiziev vs Green... man, if you could give them clone bodies to pilot, I'd watch them fight to the death every sunday, then a livestream of them having drinks, and talking fights.

I feel that it is true that western fight fans tend to focus on the wins, but there are fighting styles and personalities that are embraced regardless. A few come to mind: Both Diaz brothers, Haloway, Gathje, Zombie, and for me Yair. I don't care if they win, I love to see them fight. By the way, this is a great video. The way you gave a few simple bullets of strengths, with great examples, really set up how to watch and appreciate this matchup of skills.
