You're so welcome! Thanks for watching! If you want the complete introduction, my BALLERINA BASICS program starts from the very beginning with an array of training guides and videos plus new ones every month to progress over time. In creating Everyday Ballet, I was very aware that so many programs that claim to be "Beginner" actually assume A LOT of knowledge! Ballet is such a wonderful technique for the body (and the spirit!) and so I have really focused on making it truly accessible to people who are brand new beginners. I'm so delighted you have found it to be the introduction you've needed. YAY! Thanks again for watching and for reaching out--you've made my day! :-D

@everydayballet11 ай бұрын
You have discovered how much there is to these light movements! Brava! Yes, you may want to move smaller for a bit to really get in touch with your core. A good way to do this is to actively hug the area below the navel in and up with each exhale. Eventually your arms won’t burn as much when your core helps support them. Another idea is to imagine your arms actually start down in your waist instead of at the shoulder. Imagining this will engage the core more directly. Hope this helps! 🥰🩰✨

Hi Tiekka! I've been having trouble feeling the strain in my core during this workout. (But I definitely felt it in my upper back and shoulder blades) I was wondering if you can point out what I might be doing wrong so I can check myself? I'm young and just trying to learn some basic ballet at home because I have always loved the art form. I'm not trying to 'lose weight' or get a 'ballerina body' as I'm not a shallow and vain person, but I am trying to get stronger so I want to make sure I'm doing it correctly! Thank you so much for these videos! I can tell you know what you're doing and I look forward to learning to dance with you! 😊
@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
Hi--thanks for the great question! Feeling your core doing the work takes some practice. Based on what you're saying about your upper body feeling the work so much, it sounds like you are pulling up into the neck and shoulders as you draw in at the waistline. This is a very common (though incorrect) way to use your core. Instead of taking the lift through the waist into the upper body and ribs, draw in just the area below your navel. It’s a bit like the feeling of how we pull in when zipping a pair of jeans. To practice, place your hands below your navel. Inhale and feel your belly expand slightly. Exhale and draw this area back toward your spine lightly (not so hard you stop breathing). This is the core support we need for our posture and ballet movements. The pelvis should not tuck or arch. Instead, imagine you have a long tail hanging to the floor. This will lengthen the lower spine without articulating the pelvis away from a neutral state. Now hug in your core to support this light length in the lower spine. This is the position of the core and pelvis and it should not change at all as you do the exercise-especially when you twist the upper body. The hips must remain facing forward as well. You will move less but get more core work this way. Also be sure you aren’t pressing down through the shoulders. Instead, they should “release” and naturally fall away from the ears. It’s a relaxation of tension in the neck and shoulders that allows them to gently descend as you engage your core as described above.Try to firm your core without tensing the neck and shoulders. That’s the goal. Finally, be sure that when reaching over to one side that your are not collapsing in the waistline or shifting onto one foot more than the other. The waist should remain lengthened (especially the bottom side when bending) and the weight should remain equal through both feet. Of course the neck and shoulders should be released as the core hugs in. The way to master all of the above is to move a bit smaller paying attention to firming the core while releasing the neckline. Hope this helps! Xo, Tiekka

thank you soo much for this video💖💖 you are awesome teacher🧚🏼♀️ i have a problem is it normal that my fingers hurt (idk how to explain it) when i do these exercises?
@everydayballet4 жыл бұрын
You're so welcome! It is not unusual that you might feel A LOT of stretching in the upper body during this exercise--including sensation in the forearms, wrists, and fingers. If your fingers are hurting, then I would suggest going a little smaller in your movements to see if this helps. If you do this exercise for a week or two and it is still happening, you may want to do some dedicated wrist and hand stretching. Beyond that, you may want to ask your doctor what could be happening. Generally, when the upper body is tight, there can be some strange sensations. As your posture and flexibility improve, these should subside. Hope this helps!

I love your videos! They are so inspiring and fun. I do want to ask, as an individual with disc herniation, I experience sciatica in case of twisting back, what will be a substitute movement in this case? Thanks :)
@everydayballet Жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoy them! I would suggest simply doing the arm movements without twisting to see how that feels. Try to focus on your core engagement. You may find that with time and greater core support you’ll be able to twist a small amount without the sciatica flare-up, but don’t push it! Every body is different and you should always respect yours! Hope this helps! 🥰🩰✨

Thank you Tiekka, this exercise was great, I started my day with this! I have a question for you: is it ok if my stance is with toes pointing outward? I have weak glutes and with toes directed front I tend to push my femurs away from one another but with heels closer than toes I noticed that I can squeeze in my glutes more easily and keep my posture better? Do you have any exercises how to improve your posture starting from the gluteal and pelvis floor area? Thank you so much
@everydayballet Жыл бұрын
So glad you like it! You can certainly rotate your toes out a little if that works best for maintaining the stability of the pelvis. Whether your toes are open or straight forward, try actively pressing down through the legs as you do the exercise. This will help engage the legs and glutes more directly. Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes! 💕🩰✨

@everydayballet4 жыл бұрын
Great question! To “hug in your core” place your hands on your lower abdomen (about 2 inches below your navel). Next see if you can draw in that area. Try not to squeeze or hold your breath. The goal is to get your core support activated for your posture and all your movements. At first this may be hard to feel, but if you keep focusing on this area and lightly drawing it in, you’ll start getting that core strength and awareness. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! 🙏🩰🌷

If you want to have better posture, do this exercise every other day. To learn ballet, try practicing for 30-45 min three times per week. Hope this helps! 😊🩰🌸

Great video, I tried to follow along but I don't understand what you mean by "hugging". Should we tense certain muscle groups as if doing an imaginary hug? Someone please try to explain this to me.
@everydayballet2 жыл бұрын
I mean that you should try to lightly draw your lower core (the area below your navel) back/in and up. Try to maintain this action while softening (releasing tension) in the neck and shoulders. This will require awareness and monitoring since it’s very common to tense the neck and shoulders when we hug in the core. Hope this helps! 🥰🩰✨

I'm13 and I started ballet yesterday. I have to be self-taught because my family doesn't have the funds to put me in a class. I have some questions. What does it mean to hug your core and how do you do it? HOw do I know when to go to a more advanced lesson?
@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
Hi! These are excellent questions! “Hug in your core” is a phrase I use a lot. Put your hand on your abdomen just below the navel. This is the part we want to hug in. Now inhale. As you exhale, gently draw this area in and up. I call it a “hug” because it should not be a hard squeeze or prevent you from breathing. It is a light, ongoing feeling. Taking some breaths and hugging in on the exhale is a good place to start! As far as moving up to a new level goes, this is something very individual to each person. One way to know is to be able to do your current exercises with good stability, balance, and control--Can you take your hand off the barre while doing the steps? Do you understand the concepts of each step? These are some ways to evaluate your progress. Hope this helps! Keep dancing & loving ballet! 🥰🩰🌸

My shoulder and collarbone is really really tense when I do this exercise, I was wondering if you had any tips on how to relax those muscles so that I can activate my core instead? I can’t seem to get my neck and shoulders to “un-tense,”?
@MakkaDot Жыл бұрын
(I also accidentally posted a similar question on a different video, I meant to post that comment here but as I was writing it automatically play the next video and posted there$
@everydayballet Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! It is common to feel tension in the neck and shoulders when starting this exercise. In order to relax the neck more and shift the effort to the core and waist, you’ll want to make your movements smaller-especially the side bends. Really press down through the feet and focus on the area below the navel. See if you can draw it in slightly. Then actively release the neckline. Breathe. Repeat this over and over so that your body learns it can relax the neck and shoulders more because the core is supporting your movements. I hope this helps! 🙏🩰🥰

Is getting pain in hand normal after doing this.... Really feeling proud about myself for doing this
@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
I’m really proud of you, too! 😊 The sensation in your hand is probably due to all the postural stretching from this exercise. I can’t say for sure, but when you begin stretching your upper body, many areas will “wake up”. Monitor the situation. If you have worsening pain, stop and consider seeing a doctor or physical therapist-you may have a pinched nerve or structural issue that is causing this. Aside from any underlying issue, it is important to try to release tension in the head and neck as you work your core. Think of keeping a long neck, do smaller movement, and really focus on hugging in the area below the navel to support your upper body movements. Doing this ought to help and as you become stronger and more open in your posture, any discomfort should dissipate. Hope this helps! 😊🌸🩰

Hi I have a question so when doing this workout is it normal for my arms to hurt and burn while there in the air?
@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
Actually, yes. Many people experience fatigue and stretching sensations when doing this work. This can result in aching and burning sensations, but these are not usually cause for concern. It's just your body stretching and developing more strength. That said, if you have any injuries or known issues, or you believe these sensations to be excessive, it is important to consult your healthcare professional for further advice. Hope this helps! Stay safe and be well!

How long does it take to get a flat stomach and slim waist, mine just seems to get bigger despite doing this almost daily for weeks now :(
@everydayballet Жыл бұрын
The way the technique works for your body will vary as every body is different. One thing that happens with this exercise is that the work can get “stuck” in the neck and shoulders. It’s important to relax these areas and instead use your core, waist, and back as the primary place of effort. Also, I encourage you to focus on your joy of movement! These suggestions should help, but please be patient and kind with yourself! I hope that ballet movement can help you love your body just as it is! 💕🩰✨

@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I replied to your comment so many times, but somehow KZbin kept dropping it... It sounds like you are not using your core, but are lifting the shoulders instead. Try to hug in your core as you lift the arms. Also, soften the tops of the shoulders. When you do this, you will feel your back, waist, and core working to support your arms. Your shoulders will definitely feel it, but you want to try to transfer some of that effort into your core and back. It may take some time, but keep practicing and you will get better at it! I hope this helps!

Would ballet be good for people with sciatica problems?
@everydayballet4 жыл бұрын
Ballet can be excellent for improving various conditions including sciatica--BUT every body is different and these kinds of issues depend on so many factors! I have sciatica and I find ballet helps me prevent it from flaring up. You can always give it a try and see if it helps. Remember to go gently and modify as necessary. (And consult your doctor with any concerns! I am not a physician and my suggestions are not meant to replace medical evaluation or advice.) I hope you will find ballet helpful! The good posture it builds can be transformative!

what do you mean by "hug in your core"??
@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! I mean draw in the area below your navel. Hope this helps! 💕🌸🩰😊

@@everydayballet yes thank you. what about the pelvis? in what position/angle should it be? bum tilt slightly back, forward or trying to find the 180degree vertical line?
@everydayballet3 жыл бұрын
The pelvis should not tuck or arch. Instead, imagine you have a long tail hanging to the floor. This will lengthen the lower spine without articulating the pelvis away from a neutral state. Now hug in your core to support this light length in the lower spine. 😊
