When I was in my 20s, I finally realized my dream of taking a few ballet lessons when the aerobics studio I frequented offered adult classes. And like Isabella said, I was shocked at just how difficult it was. The teacher, a dancer with the Fort Worth Ballet made it look easy, seeming to float through the air. Next to her, I felt like a great galumphing cow.

Is it really good turnout? Are her knees aligned over her feet and is the head of the femur rotated outwards. She reverts to parallel feet when she moves. She can stand still turned out, but does not yet have the muscle development, flexibility and control to move in a properly turned out way. All this can be learned with dedication and patience!

I have no actual talent for dance or ballet, yet I took 7 semesters of ballet, and one semester of modern. As a theater major, only 2 of those were required. I kept practicing because I figured even if I was never good, I was still improving my ability to move through space on stage. And to move some grace and intention. Something that my naturally clumsy behind really needed help with. Ballet isn't just for ballerinas. Plus it made going to see ballet performances more fun, cause I knew what I was looking at.

I can't touch my toes now, but my turnout is crazier then that. Even a bit more then 180°. My knees also flex backwards a bit. I used to do some barre, to be honest, but more than 10 years ago and I wasn't good. I have very low pain limit, so it was excruciating, close to self-harm. Her poise and posture isn't there though, she "has nice/"decent" turnout" because she's sticking her bottom out. The second she'd learn to fix her posture and alignment, her turnout would not be as good. So she doesn't really have good turnout. Not in any real way. Getting your feet to turn out nicely requires incredible strength with the right posture and muscles, as I'm sure you know, but you can achieve a "nice turnout " by sticking your bottom out and not adhering to proper posture. You've got the real thing, because you'd have all of it 😊 xxxx

I've never been trained on pointe, but constantly require it while bouldering (in climbing shoes). From 16 years of gymnastics and 5 years of bouldering my ankles are strong and flexible. Makes me wonder what really going on pointe would be like in a real shoe, rather than the climbing shoe.
@julialunsford7071
@julialunsford7071 2 жыл бұрын
You’d probably do well with pointe in terms of strength but flexibility may be lacking. Having flexibility and mobility in the ankle and metatarsal is also what helps to go all the way up en pointe. But in general, having the proper technique for pointe is more important above strength or flexibility; you are more likely to injure yourself if you don’t.
@patheticmortal373
@patheticmortal373 2 жыл бұрын
@@julialunsford7071 my foot flexibility is decent. Sat in pike, straddle, splits etc I can point my toes nearly to the floor. I was also constantly given calf raises as a "punishment" or for conditioning. My high demi point is quite solid and I never sickle ( I remember my coaches shouting at others for doing so). It's not that I've not been trained for prepointe, it's just I've not had formal training en pointe. Should try adult ballet lessons to see how I'd do. I will say though that I have little to no rhythm lol.

@kaylazx
@kaylazx 2 жыл бұрын
Pointe shoes don't work like that. You need years of training to develop the strength and technique to avoid hurting yourself, even if you only want to do simple things. At Vaganova Academy, they don't start pointe work until 6 months in, and that is with children who are specifically selected for their natural ability AND who have 6 classes a week for those 6 months. If you don't take class that often, it will take longer, hence "a few years". Besides, those children start with the very basics, only going up and down at the barre for 15 minutes a day. Furthermore you can't just decide which shoe you want, you have to be fitted professionally because different pointe shoes are good for different types of feet. Having the wrong pointe shoe can damage the foot, anywhere from blisters to bone deformities or fractures. I'm not saying this to be mean or discourage you; I just think you need to slow down a bit. There are ballet classes for adults (I'm 20 and have taken beginner classes for about 7 months now), so you should try to start one of those and see how you feel about it. If you really love ballet, you will be able to work your way up to pointe through a few years of dedicated effort (whether you have natural ability or not), but it does take time. Simply buying pointe shoes online and trying to wear them without correct training is an easy recipe for injury. That said, I hope you enjoy your ballet journey and can safely go en pointe someday if you really want to!

Are your kneecaps inline with your toes? If your toes are turning out past your kneecaps, then that is a problem and you could injure yourself. Proper turnout happens at the hips.

@@aoiahiru670 sorry. Is turnout not when the feet are pointed outward with the heels touching? Like I said, not actually a dancer so don’t know the terms. But yeah. @nikkisweezea2388
@nikkisweezea2388 2 жыл бұрын
@@AbstractlyMe83 It's a common misconception that turnout is the feet only. Turnout is "from the hip" meaning that your entire leg gets turned out. Not just your heels should be touching, but the entire backs of your legs up to nearly your crotch. If you try to turnout just from the ankles, and then attempt movement, you can seriously injure yourself.
@julialunsford7071
@julialunsford7071 2 жыл бұрын
@@AbstractlyMe83 agree with Nikki on this one. It’s not just planting your feet in 180°. When you turn out your leg, you are turning out the ENTIRE hip adductor/abductor. You are having your bum tucked slightly under your hip, your knees/legs are straight, your chest is lifted up, and you are not rolling. You likely do have hypermobility and that is why you can naturally place your feet so far back, but that indicates that your ankles are weak and that you need to work on strengthening them. Even if you aren’t dancing, you can seriously injure your feet by repeatedly overpronating (which makes sense as to why you have sprained your feet so many times! Ouch!)
@AbstractlyMe83
@AbstractlyMe83 2 жыл бұрын
@@julialunsford7071 interesting. I’ve never been told I’m hyper mobile, and I don’t have that anywhere else on my body. I figured ankles just did that. I loved this! I don’t know anything about anything, but I just Have to consider that the Refinery 29 girl has (or would have had, were she very young) a significant degree of natural ability. I won’t say, ‘Too bad… yada yada..‘ as that was not her path, but I appreciate everything about this piece. It was it’s own dance. ❤️

Seriously how hard is it to put your hair in a bun? Maybe I’m biased because I had long hair for most of my life, and could do a bun that could out last a hurricane, but it’s not exactly rocket science. Lots of pins and maybe a touch of product for flyaways.

I usually really like the things you are pointing Out positively but why did you point out her nice turnout When she just turned out her feet without rotating her knees which is super unhealthy. I think we should Not compliment someone on something unhealthy.
