I loooove barre. There is something really comforting about it - it's like going home. You forget about everything else going on in your life, and just have total, 100% concentration of each movement that you are doing. It's hard work, but it's relaxing.

some kids start at three, some start when they are adults. everyone is at a different level in all walks of life. those children you see on instagram probably eat, breathe and sleep ballet to be that good. you might be envious of their technique while they may envy you and your social life lol. I know because I started dance when I was 3 years old. I danced for fourteen years and it was before instagram existed , but I'm telling you, don't get caught up in other people's technique level. use it as inspiration, not comparison! see what those kids/teens/adults do to succeed in a pirouette or a jete or anything you struggle in. it will be okay, I promise. dance isn't everything , it's supposed to be fun! I hope this encourages you. sending love 💕

I struggle with this so much, may it be in class when there is someone who has been there longer than me and is therefore so amazing and more flexibel or may it be on Instagram when I always ask myself where I would be if I had started ten or more years earlier. What helps me the most, especially in class when I am afraid those good people judge me, is thinking about how they had also been at my point once or what advantage they might have due to doing sth similar before. We all start out a different time and with different conditions, different bodies.

I did ballet for quite a while but nowhere near the level of what some 12 year olds can do. After a long break, because of university I'm trying to get back into dance but it's really hard to not compare yourself to all the incredible dancers online. But everybody is just at the state that they are and all you can really do is work on yourself and enjoy it. Buuuuuut, easier said than done :D :D

Every few seconds, I felt like giving you a standing ovation! You are SO smart, Katie. Ballet is mentally challenging, and you showcase this. Thank you, thank you, thank you. My favorite part was at 4:44 when you said doing ballet is a GIFT. I’m probably just a couple years older than you, but in my early twenties I had to stop dancing because my mitochondria wouldn’t support the energy dance requires due to chronic illness. I still mourn this and miss it every day. Gratitude can go a long way at the barre!

I'm a professional ballet dancer and a few months ago I ditched instagram. One of the main reasons I used it in the first place was to see ballet dancers that inspire me, as well as video and performance clips. A bunhead through and through! However, as inspiring as it can be to see videos of dancers you aspire to look like, it can be extremely disheartening and negative in a subconscious way. It's so easy to look at these dancers who are so beautiful and often naturally gifted and think "why can't I do that?" or "I wish I was that good." Once I took a break from instagram, I felt that I appreciated myself more, and gave more value to what I bring to this art, rather than dwell on negative comparisons. What Kathryn says is so important. Focus on what you have and work to improve that to the best of your ability. You can't grow into your own individual self as you dream to be someone else. Thank you Kathryn for your amazing videos, which are so helpful for dancers at any level.

Hi Katie, I think you could expand this first point a little bit, and do a video about the barre's theory! You could explain the point of each barre 's exercise , plies, tendus, degages etc. I know you already do it in your barres and technique vídeos, but I think it would be nice a whole video about all of them

This was such a great video!! I once heard someone say "if you're not sweating by the end of plies, you're doing it wrong" haha. And totally agree about the Instagram saga - many of those young dancers don't actually have adequate technique or strength for more than just a photo, which is both sad and dangerous. P.S. LOOOOOOOVE the leotard!!! Such a gorgeous style and colour.

I think there’s one more point to add: a lot of people so focus on getting up, balance on Demi, on pointe. But getting down is equivalently important. I see a lot of people just let go after they get a good amount of balance time at the barre instead of controlled down.

My ballet teacher is very good about explaining cause and effect. He reminds me of how I can do degages and tendus and passe at the barre, and that I need to take that to center. He explains how these annoyingly repetitive drills and combinations and how they'll help us when we get to do a full variation on pointe in front of thousands of people. It's humbling, but also encouraging. He is a really great teacher, director, and coach.

I love how my ballet teacher explains the use of the basics we do at the barre. E. g. we don't just think about bending our knees when doing plies, we think about energy flowing up, since plies are what brings us up in a pirouette or a jump, like a spring going up and down.

I know I’m never going to be a ballerina, but I love the focus and concentration it takes in doing everything “properly.” Even when I’m just doing seemingly easy barre work, I’m usually breaking a sweat. I am an adult dancer and would love you to restart a back to basics series with those types of things.

Here is the Abstract: This end-of-course paper aims to take a look at the self-image built by classical dancers on the multimedia social network Instagram, in order to apprehend how this part of the scenic dance is exposed and affirmed in the contemporary social context, knowing that self-image production is a means of visual communication and that such social network is exclusively based on the interaction by this way of communicating. Paradoxical images as we, producers of images are also produced by them. For this research, different bibliographic sources were utilized, besides the observation of some profiles of dancers on Instagram and an anonymous questionnaire relating classic ballet to social networks. Keywords: Classical Ballet, Instagram, Image, Social Networks

I used to hate barre and thought it was boring. Now, I LOVE it. Thinking back I started doing these things and that is when I started to really appreciate the importance of it. Loved the video it was great 💖

I dance for almost 10 years (age 3-12) then quit what I thought would be forever, but I missed it too much, I'm 14 now and just started going to classes again last month, I got put in with 10 year olds so I'm spending alot of time at home trying to build up strength. I remember the last few years I had done dance i absolutely hated barre, and I started to hate ballet in general, now ballet is what I look forward to, the barre is like home, so to anyone who is starting to loose their passion or is thinking of going back after quitting, it is so incredibly worth it.🖤

Hello!! Lovely video as always!! And as for what you're saying about Instagram and photo editing, it's 100% true. I'm a photographer, cinematographer and i edit absolutely everything. I don't make it unrealistic at all, i mostly enhance light and color, but i am absolutely capable of moving sometimes leg up a few inches in their penche, or adding some arch enhancement to their feet to make them more bendy. It's actually quite easy to do, but you're right. Best thing to do is tune it out and at worst, use it as inspiration and get to the point where you do what you see in those photos without needing to edit them like that.

Never understood why barre was so important. Now I know - to develop each movement of a step. The foundation of most steps in ballet. Thank you for the information. :)

Hi, Katie! I was wondering if you could do a video on bows. I'm never sure if I'm supposed to say in character for bows or if they're supposed to look more relaxed.

great topics! I'm glad you're addressing all these issues, I always think ballet is self centred, you must be focusing in what you're doing, work on your body, work with your own limitations and remember that it IS a privilege as you well mentioned it.

Hard truths. Really needed. And this appreciation for all we have goes beyond ballet. Now that I have left that world and only occasionally go to professional classes, I see jaded dancers and what Katie says is so true. Many people out there only just survive, barely paying their bills and going through life. Dancing is a choice and hard work, yes, but a privilege nonetheless.

We started my daughter's instagram after she was horribly bullied at her last ballet school. It gave her something positive to work on and also a voice where she had none before. She just wants to do what she loves to do, and since she's been back to class it's amazing to look back and see her progress. It may look "perfect", but please don't compare because she is posting for herself to celebrate those small victories after going through terrible trauma this past year.

I’m adult so I can’t resent my ballet teachers too much, but when I was only taking ballet I would do almost all my barre without the barre to challenge myself. A contemporary teacher I met later saw me and pointed out I was only balanced cause I was doing crazy things anatomically to stay that way haha. I love barre more after improving my technique and learning out how active and engaging it really is.

I wish more of my ballet teachers would have explained what you have said in this video - bar is not a warm-up! Also it would have been helpful, like you explained, to know WHY we were doing each bar exercise/step (for larger centerwork steps). Thanks Katie!!

Thank you for this wonderful video it is very helpful when it comes to barre. Good to know that barre is more then a warm up I always had a hint it was about technique. I been tooning people out and focusing on myself and my technique. I been trying dance and put weight on the balls of my feet. Misty Copland said the same thing😂. Thank you for everything you do videos, tips and advice. You are wonderful person you helped over the pass months with technique. Plus I got my pointe shoes and I loved the videos I did they really did help me. Love you with the love of the Lord 😁
