See ballet dancers Mikhail Baryshnikov and Sergei Polunin trade dance steps back and forth.
This is not a comparison, but a celebration of two extraordinary ballet dancers. The idea was inspired by your very kind comments... I don't think I've enjoyed the creative process more than during the researching and making of this video. What joy these two incredible artists bring to our lives, each fully capable of transcending their own time, and each, without a doubt, sure to leave a legacy that will allow them to long outlive their own mortality.

Baryshnikov’s performances are so visually crisp in movement.

Baryshnikov's torso is a rectangle of steel. He was never inflexible with his upper torso, but for the most part, it functioned as a powerhouse that both energized and stabilized his legs producing amazing height and outward extensions. His arms and face were so expressive, focused on the storytelling and the entire stage of characters. The resulting charisma made each exceptional performance engaging for his audience. Polunin has an extraordinarily flexible, yet strong, upper body. He often raised his chin and threw his chest forward, supported by a powerful upper back. His resulting movements were fluid throughout his whole body. When he lifted his partner, he rested her on his upper chest supported by his slightly arched back rather than resting her straight up on his shoulder in the classic way,. That movement was unique and lovely to see. Nuryev has an magic all his own. Each danceur out there has a different strength of physique, and the best schooling will teach them to understand and to capitalize on that strength. The best are a surreal joy to watch as they invite us into the world of the stage.

Even technically Baryshnokov is superior. Pay attention to the music: in case of Baryshnikov the orchestra plays noticeably quicker. And he is also more natural, no strain is felt.

Efectivamente, esa es la abismal diferencia. Técnicamente Polunin es buenísimo pero su técnica carece de la magia de la de Baryshnikov. Polunin hace una extraordinaria tabla de gimnasia acompañada de música y Baryshnikov baila convirtiendo su danza en arte en movimiento. Tiene lo que nosotros en España llamamos duende.

Exactly one is dancer and comedian, Polutin is only a technician. The whole Met performance is a gem of joy, comedy, and perfect precision in dancing. What I call clean dancing. I attended in NYC the performance with Barysshnikov and Harvey and remember walking out of the theater on a little cloud unable to go to sleep for many hours later. The same happened in the 70s in Paris with Vassiliev and Maximova in the same ballet.

I agree. Ballet is a gracefully and elegantly art form conveying a story. Imo, too many contemporary dancers have lost sight of the concept of what ballet is and have begun to compete in a gymnastic acrobatic sport. If I wanted sports I’d watch the Olympics but not ballet. In watching ballet I want to see the story and Misha knew how to tell the story.

А по моему мнению Полунин исполняет не торжественно, а скорее как спортсмен. Как то слишком атлетично. Для меня в Полунине не хватает искрометности, артистизма, только техника и физическая мощь. Барышников танцует и невольно улыбаешься. Таких как Полунин много, а Барышников уникален.

Let's be honest! We all saw Polunin in these ballets and his perfect performance. But there is some kind of a trick in this video, fake. If you look attentively, you will see deliberate random changes in speed in Polunin’s videotape. He's never danced like that! Anyone who has seen him before will understand what I mean. This change in the video is intentional. This hate towards him is because of his political position. Polunin, a ballet genius, in many ways better than Baryshnikov. But he is Russian!!! RUSSIAN and stays with RUSSIA! This is the reason to start to ruin his career. I will send him a link to this video. Perhaps he will sue the author or try to protect himself from dirty, hateful Russophobia!

Барышников см на 15 ниже Полунина. Тогда все иначе - вес, мышечная масса, центр тяжести, размах рук и ног, темп исполнения элементов. Поэтому Полунин выглядит более тяжелым и медлительным...

Полунин дОльше находится в воздухе, так как намного выше Барышникова, поэтому оркестр вынужден замедлять темп, ожидая его приземления. Вот и кажется, что прыгает медленно. На самом деле,- Полунин летит😊 У них разное исполнение, к тому же. Полунин усложняет прыжки таким элементом, как поднятие обеих рук одновременно вертикально, это намного сложнее. И вообще, это почти разные школы. Полунин годится Барышникову во внуки, так что это разные эпохи. Всё равно, что сравнивать какую - нибудь Кшесинскую с Лопаткиной, например. А вообще, мы сравниваем известных, тех, кого зафиксировавла камера в своё время. А мне нравился Анатолий Бердышев. Но, его записей мало. Если бы не Плисецкая, то вообще бы никаких не осталось.

I was blessed to have been able to Baryshnikov dance live. It was unbelievable. I’m sure the other gentleman has good qualities… but I can’t see them. Baryshnikov appears to float in his… jumps?… the other gentleman seems “heavy.” Technically perfect, but no passion, no color, no lightness. Bary for the win!

I agree. Baryshnikov is the greatest male ballet dancer I've ever seen. Doesn't he seem to float and at times to be suspended in the air? I remember seeing him live do a solo dance with a top hat at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA back in the mid to late seventies. He was amazing.

Both are excellent dancers, but Baryshnikov still takes the cake. I'm only a ballet amateur, but to me Sergey looks like a more technical dancer, more athletic & tense, while Mikhail is while also athletic, at the same time very elegant, effortless & very light. The way he dances it's as if he doesn't put any effort into it and it all comes naturally to him, he's like a feather, moves around as if he's flying.

Он именно танцует (парит над сценой, легкий, игривый, все движения ровно так как они должны быть, чтобы передать настроение). Полунин на сравнении как будто спортсмен, быстрее прыгнуть, дальше пролететь. Скорее всего я бы это не заметила без сравнения, но в нарезке прямо хочется сказать, что Барышников делает искусство, а Полунин - спорт высших достижений...

Безусловно гениальный Барышников! В добавок к танцевальному мастерству, он живой, в отличие от Полунина, у которого всегда одно и то же рыбное выражение лица и самолюбование, которое очень заметно.

Мне кажется, это видео отлично демонстрирует разницу в мышлении и постановках хореографов прошлого и наших современниках. Барышникову в танце дано чуть больше времени на "точки", элементов меньше, акценты расставлены по другому. И за счет этого у нее остается пространство и время для того самого артистического маневра и самовыражения, которое безусловно делает его танец более художественно ярким и этим цепляет больше. С точки зрения количества прыжков в секунду - их безусловно меньше. Но зритель от этого только выигрывает. У Полунина наоборот: прыжков больше и просто не остается времени ни на какую артистическую доработку эффектной позы: он с трудом укладывается в музыку. Да, технически и физически его исполнение более сложное, но зритель от этого скорее потерял, поскольку у танцовщика не осталось времени и сил проявить свой артистизм. Имхо, технически и просто элементами перенасыщенный подход к танцевальным партиям - бич современной хореографии. Странное искажение ума.

Basicamente como la gran frase "menos es mas" Argentina por aqui y lo mismo le paso al tango, se volvio casi "acrobatico" cuando el baile se conecta mas a la musica y genera mas impacto si es al "piso", con los pies pegados al piso y unos pocos trucos... Просто Барышников меньше ростом, а маленькие танцоры всегда более вёрткие. Просто по закону физики- части тела быстрее проходят траекторию движения. Зато высокий Полунин лучше смотрится.

Part of what gave Baryshnikov his magic was his acting skills. He wasn’t just dancing to the music he was using his dancing as a tool to tell a story. Like Barbra Streisand used her voice as a medium for her acting, he used dance. He understood that ballet is basically beautifully executed pantomime. The performers are dancing instead of speaking or singing but the intent is essentially the same, to tell a story. Baryshnikov used every ounce of his being to tell you who that character was and what he was about. Nothing was ever clinical with him, every movement had meaning. His ballets felt like true theater, you could tell what the story was by the action on the stage not by the liner notes in the playbill. That’s a truly rare gift.

Not in specific technique, of course, but in the impact of the whole package - the stage presence, the passion, the sheer exuberance of their artistic generosity, the Mariinsky/Kirov elegance and restraint and clarity. Polunin is a master, and one of my favourite dancers of all time… which just goes to show how incredible Baryshnikov is. There is no match for his talent. It is almost otherworldly. I was lucky enough to watch Baryshnikov on stage in the 90s. It was like watching magic. He defies gravity. There may never be another dancer like him.

Having seen both, Misha is better, but both are excellent. Beyond technique, Misha danced with, and to, his partner- always connected. You were not just amazed by the dancing, but fell in love with his character. He often outshone his partner but never acted like it on stage.

Well, for my money, Baryshnikov, despite time elapsed since this performance, still has more chutzpah. Plus he keeps his body together whilst jumping and turning...no limbs flailing around - control, precision and joyful communication with partner and audience. What a great dancer...

I have adored Mikhail Baryshnikov since I was a teenager; other dancers have come gone and more will appear on the world stage in the future, but no one will ever surpass Baryshnikov. His athleticism, passion, discipline and complete mastery of his body at every moment combine to create not only greatness but as close to perfection as it is possible to be. Polunin ranges across the stage striking poses and flinging his body to and fro. Baryshnikov is perfectly poised and appears to slip into his movements like snow falling on a calm night in the Russian steppes. Palunin belongs to the stage for this moment in time; Baryshnikov belongs to the world for all time.

I'm not throwing shade at Polunin. He's a superb dancer with tremendous control and grasp of the science of dancing. However, I've seen Baryshnikov in his heyday. No one and nothing approaches his sublime mastery of dance. He covers the entire length of a stage in breathtaking leaps and turns. His mastery of dance is only exceeded by his passion and humor. He takes dance itself absolutely seriously, but plays with the story adding excellent acting skills to his repertoire of achievements. When the scene is passionate, he burns; when the scene is funny, he clowns; but when the scene is sorrowful he will rip your heart out.
