Is it Patrice Bart who does all the petit allegro stuff? Because wow. It's so rare to find the complete Etudes I really appreciate this. I'm wondering how much our aesthetic has changed since the 80s. Wasn't Noelle Pointois quite well known? Yet I had to see her feet up close to determine she was on pointe: she has a shorter, maybe stiffer foot than is typical today? But Etudes is such a great blend of dance and music, it's hard not to just stand up and cheer at the end!

Noëlla Pontois was a very well known Etoile at Opéra de Paris, she is 80 now, her daughter (Miteki Kudo) and grand daughter are also at Opéra de Paris. She was very famous before the Noureev generation in the 80's ! I am too young to saw her perform but I had a poster of her in my bedroom !

Yes, Patrice Bart was very good with his petite batterie. If you look well, you’ll realise that the fist girl to be seen in the pliés is actually Françoise Legrée who was nominated Étoile in 1983, and when Patrice Bart is doing the tours with four girls, the fourth one happens to be Monique Loudières who was also to become an Étoile of the Paris Opera ballet. This Études was danced on December 25th 1980, and I was there on its eve… glad they haven’t filmed on the 24th because one girl was wounded and had to be carried out of the stage, and Claude de Vulpian’s pointe ribbon untied while she was dancing Le Corsaire, frightening ! As a matter of fact, in this Études, Noëlla Pontois also got hurt just before the two diagonals of jetés, but she was able to finish the ballet, you can see it on her face when she does her coupés-jetés… Three other ballets were given, the order was : • Conservatory (starring Jacques Namont) • Études (Pontois-Atanassoff-Bart) • Paquita 3rd act (Clerc-Lormeau-Platel-Legrée) • Le Corsaire pas-de-deux (Vulpian-Dupond) • Defilé du corps de ballet. C'est une oeuvre assez "clivante" ! on adore ou on déteste, certains n'aiment pas l'adaptation musicale de Knudager Riisager, trop appuyée (certains parlent de musique de fanfare, je suis d'ailleurs étonnée que sa famille ne soit pas déjà intervenue pour faire modifier le titre de la vidéo !) .. par contre la chorégraphie est quand même enthousiasmante à regarder pour le spectateur (et très dure pour les danseurs). L'Opéra de Paris a repris le ballet pour l'hommage à Patrick Dupont, impossible d'avoir une place hors abonnement mais j'avoue que j'aimerais bien voir ce ballet !
