So what is the circular economy?
Our current model is primarily the linear economy. In this we produce, then use, then discard. In this model huge amounts of energy and waste are produced in a way that is unsustainable and damaging for the environment. The circular economy is a model in which we minimise waste by reusing, repairing, renting, upcycling etc. By keeping products and materials in constant use, we turn the line into a circle.
As part of recognising an existing economy in Ballina,
we reached out to businesse already contributing to the circular economy in Ballina and North Mayo.
Indeed most of these businesses do not realise they are already operating as part of this economy.
We identified over 60 businesses in the area that are part of the circular economy. In order to advance this more sustainable form of consumption, we are intending to promote the circular economy in the area and make it easier for sustainably minded consumers to find the shops, businesses and organizations that are circular.
Ethical shopping has never been more important and we hope that by branding Ballina as a circular economy hub, conscious consumers can make purchasing decisions that have a positive social, economic, and environmental impact in the community of Ballina, north Mayo and the county.
