to demonstrate this fully, you could included a bullet that was not connected to that gun so we can see the difference between them as well. Is there a lot of difference between these patterns from gun to gun?

@ramsexy7w7

It's not. I use the IBIS on a daily basis (working with forensics laboratory). The IBIS is undoubtedly a helpful tool but it is just one of many elements to be analized in ballistic elements. It's something quite complicated to explain but there's always a difference. I've seen consecutive serial numbers in firearms that are the hardest to differentiate but never identical.

You could always use a revolver or shotgun. You can swap out the firing pins in most firearms and you can switch out an upper reciever on an ar15.

In order for these assholes to even do this they have to have the exact gun to test fire it in order to make the comparison. As far as I'm concerned if you blow somebody away as long as you wore gloves when loading the gun and they have nothing to compare it to then there whole science is for fucking nothing. Most criminals just throw it away in the water after a crime is committed so they aren't later caught with the gun. If you're a professional hitman you could just buy a different barrel for the gun and only use it for when you're committing criminal activity. Also be sure to have a separate pair of shoes just for criminal activity.

Looking at his comparisons between the reference and his database sample, sure there were a few similarities, but there were a few differences I could notice with the naked eye. Being that all guns are factory made the same, I don't feel like you could realistically differentiate between 2 of the same model gun with 100% certainty. Prosecutors probably just claim that ballistics found a match to lock people up (but did they really find a match???).
@johnadams-wp2yb
@johnadams-wp2yb 5 жыл бұрын
I've argued your point for ages. I even wrote to the forensic dept. at Scotland yard saying that 2 pistols from the same factory line would be identical, as cnc cut. They did not reply.

@MrRaphymaluleke
@MrRaphymaluleke 2 жыл бұрын
According to my technical understanding. If both guns are from the same factory and are still new, the difference is not identifiable, the cnc cutting is set the same. But with old guns which fired different number of shots the guns marking becomes way different and can help with upto about 95% accuracy. Secondly, how the gun is maintained or handled through out its life span has an effect on its marking or fingerprint, this difference also helps in marching the gun. It's a lot of work and attention to details is extremely important.
@slftr5139
@slftr5139 Жыл бұрын
@@MrRaphymaluleke, there will still be very minor difference between two identical models made even one after another. Although CNC machining is extraordinarily accurate for practical purposes, there are still going to be non-zero tolerances - variables such as the sharpness of the cutting utensils, temperature of the cutting utensil/factory temperature, and very slight imperfections in the material being milled can cause microscopic changes in the rifling pattern/firing pin shape. However, ballistics has proven to be unreliable, at best, with a false match being made in 1 out of 63 cases. Unfortunately, people tend to see expert opinions on firearms matched to bullets recovered from crime scenes as fact, and if that’s all the evidence the prosecution has against an individual being accused of an indictable offence, then it’s not unlikely that the accused will potentially be found guilty of a serious offence (such as murder in the first degree), when they might in fact be completely innocent, just unlucky. If a criminal really wanted to, they could easily change the so-called “fingerprint” of their firearm to detach themselves/their weapon from crimes they’ve committed. Obfuscation of the rifling pattern can be achieved via passing a rifling button through the barrel multiple times, or even just using a wire brush quite vigorously. The firing pin can then be modified slightly using something such as a file, or a new firing pin/barrel combination can be installed, and the old ones can be destroyed/discarded. It’s not a bullet-proof source of evidence (no pun intended), but if there’s other pieces of evidence that would suggest that an individual has committed an indictable offence using a firearm recovered from their possession, then it should be served as nothing more than a suggestion that the firearm was likely used, but still not treated as fact.

So Glock is the most common handgun overwhelmingly, so if you change the barrel and firing pin and recoil spring, which takes less then 5 minutes, your reading will be rendered useless? Not trying to give criminals ideas, just naturally curious
@Gokuguy1243
@Gokuguy1243 4 ай бұрын
Barrel would affect the recovered bullets for sure, probably making the comparison between bullets useless. As for the recovered cartridge cases being rendered useless because of differing firing pins, that's not necessarily true. The breechface impression will still be comparable as well as any aperture shear present and potentially other surfaces (Ejector marks). But yes, if you really know firearm forensics, you can try to game the system. Even using certain types of firearms that are known to mark poorly. But for every diligent prepared criminal you have 1000 more who aren't. So it's still a useful practice even if it's not perfect. I mean you can always wipe your fingerprints or wear gloves (easier IMO than modifying firearms), but no one seems to dismiss the fingerprinting practice
@jameskim2007
@jameskim2007 4 ай бұрын
@@Gokuguy1243 so if someone had this well planned out, wiped finger prints off ammo, and basically had a new Glock slide or upper with all new internals which can be bought for $100, committed the murder and swapped back slides which take literally 5 seconds and destroyed the old slide, there’s no way ammo can be tied to the frame of the Glock since it’s the frame that actually ties the weapon to the owner of the gun.
