The scale of stupid of this event seems to escape you yet still - pranks on tiktok may be stupid, but the negative effect is limited to a few people. This thing here was an immediate and longterm environmental disaster, an immediate safety hazard to people and a colossal waste of resources: Helium is a critically important noble gas for many technical applications, far too precious and rare to put it in 1.5 million balloons and throw it away. Helium has to be extracted from natural gas or from nuclear reactors used to produce Plutonium where Helium appears as a byproduct of the alpha-decay of Uranium. There have been several Helium shortage periods in the last 4 decades that caused prices to go up considerably.

Ah, Big Chuck and Lil John. Balloon releases were the thing in the 80s, and I remember this event. We did balloon releases quite a few times in elementary school and I always remember picking up the remnants from the fields and yards, or there would be deflated ones hanging from bushes and trees. I think the realization that this was dumb came in the 90s and it died out. Love the videos and thanks for the memory!

Many rules are written in blood. In aviation, there's a tragedy behind almost every major rule. You can find this phenomena just about anywhere. What seems obvious to us, may only be obvious in hindsight. Seatbelts only became widely available in the 70s and it took another 20-30 years for most states to make them mandatory.

We did ( in Maryland) balloon releases every year at elementary school as a fund raiser. About 1$ a balloon paid by sponsors and parents, tickets were attached to the balloons ,each child released what they sold( or parents sold). Children shared with kids that hadn't sold any or just a few. Prizes were awarded to the balloons going thr furthest. It stopped because of latex effecting the wild life.

Every new years when the ball drops in time square they release all that confetti. It’s supposed to be biodegradable and they actually have people clean it up after. @guernica4262Ай бұрын
They were probably dead by the time the balloons launched. The lake was 65 degrees on Sept 26-27, 1986. That means roughly 2 hours for hypothermia to set in and subsequent death. They went out on the 26th, and presumably their boat capsized sometime during the 26th. A SAR was not launched until the next morning. If they had been in the water that entire night, they would not have been found alive, balloons or not.
