I guess the term in perpetuaty is meaningless in today's society.

I worked in Ashland PA for 8 years from 1980 to 1988 and traveled through Centralia everyday on my way to work. Knowing first hand residents, fellow employees and friends evoke memories that I will always remember. Thanks Jay for another great video!!!

its sad to me how much this place has been trashed by visitors, especially over the past handful of years. My grandfathers uncle was also one of the first people who arrived on scene to that plane crash. He was driving his route in his milk truck when he watched the plane hit very close to one of the tipple/ mine entrances during a shift change. There were pieces of people and plane in trees as far as he could see, so he began checking on the miners who were standing at the tipple when the plane crashed since there wasn't much anyone could do for the planes passengers or crew.

I'm guessing the huge drag bucket was used to strip overburden from coal seams so they could mine them out from the surface.

This is a deliberate intent to break down society. This scourge isn't specific it's intended to affect all levels of society. It's a disgrace that human beings can be beguiled into thinking this is on trend & the lack of education knows no bounds. It can happen to anyone but people go out of their way to choose to participate in these activities. Life isn't good enough as it is they need something more & want to live on the edge thinking they can change any time it doesn't suit their narrative but this isn't the way it works!! It affects more males & therefore the decline in manhood takes over & the cartels are laughing their way to the money boom! There will be no Men so to speak..society is going to cave in & the American dream becomes a nightmare!! Wake up & smell the coffee!!!!

My friends and I took a trip across state from to Pittsburgh to see the town. At the time, the only person left there was the mayor. Sadly, he passed away. Great experience, just be careful navigating around. The old fire station and church on the hill is amazing!

My boss bought a few houses in nearby Mt. Carmel to renovate a few years back and I remember driving through Centralia every Friday when we'd go out there to work on the house. I used to be really into urban exploration when I was younger (Weird NJ places and stuff like that) so it really was interesting to finally 'see' Centralia and say I've been there. Even though there isn't much there left to see, I still found it very cool knowing the history of the place and knowing there's a fire raging beneath your feet that you can't see. Wish I still had the time to do more exploring myself. I definitely miss it.

Nicely done. I remember going through Centralia in the 1980’s on route 61, seeing the vent pipes and all. I also recall this story made national news. But I haven’t been up that way in almost 20 years. It’s a bygone era. People from central Pennsylvania like to stay in the towns they grew up in and then continue that legacy raising families of their own. It’s a shame for them because this catastrophe, really, ended that for the townsfolk. The movie _The Town that Was_ is a good documentary capturing the history of the fire.

I have visited Big Brutus in West Mineral Kansas several times. It's the 2nd largest electric coal shovel in the world and came to be in the 60's. It's amazing and you can walk all over inside of it. These huge machines are awesome!! What would that be like to be the operator and see what these monsters can do!

A former Pennsylvanian, I well remember the news about this fire. We had a priest in my home parish who was from there, and had family there. I saw your initial video on Centralia, Chris, and now this. You do such a terrific job of bringing us these interesting stories. Thanks!

Fun Fact: in Centralia, Washington there was a large coal mine as well. Didn't catch fire but during reclamation had lagoons of treated sewage sludge and/or hotdog production slurry. The slurry was spread for fertilizer for grass, ground cover growth. Talk about a "shitty" job!!😊

If Centralia was still around, it would look like every other Pennsylvania town in that area. Having lived in that region,I can say that with confidence. Kinda dreary , sleepy and old fashioned.
