My sense is that while this is fun and excellent in its own way, their ballroom training (in merengue and even more in other styles) is getting in the way of their appreciating and dancing what I'll call real merengue. Perhaps they are trying to organically evolve merengue - which is allowed and could be good - bringing your personality and creativity to a dance is good - but only if they appreciate real merengue! I myself am far from qualified to say what is real merengue. Any recommendations for videos of real merengue? Thanks. (I won't criticize suggestions.)

Ballroom Merengue, it's hybrid. The basic steps are merengue but the transitions are completely out of tango type dance.

That is in no way shape or form is merengue!!! First of all Shakira is Colombian and does NOT sing merengue! So many great merengue bands and they pick a song that is not merengue! Merengue comes from the Dominican Republic not Colombia!

That’s not entirely true. Merengue originated from other Latin countries such as colombia. Dominican Republic adapted the dance style. And shakira very much dances merengue. I don’t think it’s very fair of u to label a countries heritage when we really don’t know where’s it’s from. Happy indigenous people day.

This is salsa not merengue it's akin and very confusing if not familiar with the culture check this out it's a better traditional style done by the people during some kind of fest.kzbin.info/www/bejne/opSzeZSMaNVpiZY This video is true style it's a bit out of wack cause there is like 20 of them doing a routine but if you focus on a single partner you'd get the gist pretty much if your a girl follow exactly what she does and hence forth for the guy.

Not authentic in the slightest, Merengue isn't danced with heels off the floor, and the music isn't even real merengue, either. You'll never see club dancers dancing like this.

Cause this isn't the club. This is ballroom. Completely two different settings and expectations. Yes, it's not a traditional merengue song, but they never claimed it was- it's an interpretation. This song has a merengue beat you can do the merengue basic march to. It's the same with any other Latin dance. The salsa and Bachata you dance with your cousins growing up or at the local club is NOT the same as how professional Latin dancers or ballroom dancers dance salsa bachata. (And yes, there is a distinction between professional Latin dancing and professional ballroom.)
